1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

where do all the old dolls go?

Jul 28, 2011

    1. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore? Yes.
Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA? Yes and no in that order.
Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand? Not really.
What state are these dolls in now? All my dolls are in wonderful condition. My oldest doll, best anyone can tell, dates from 1998. But as she is a Volks Maggie, she IS still sold by the company. Next oldest doll is from 2002, again a Volks, they still pull out Yo-Tenshi Yuki for festivals and such.
Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why? Because I'm laaaaazy.

    2. The lion's share of my dolls are older sculpts (and out of production now that Delfs have been discontinued-). In particular, I have a pair of Elf Shiwoos, an Elf Yder, a "first generation" Lishe (Hello, squirrel-cheeks! XD) and an older El, as well as a pair of Volks KoTenshi Tsubakis, an older School A, an Emma, a Sakaki and a Heath.

I don't take a lot of pictures these days, and I post what few I do take very rarely. I know perfectly well that none of my dolls are all that unusual or interesting, and to be brutally honest about it, the kind of sculpts I favor are so old-school they've even surpassed "*SO* five years ago"-territory. 'Out-of-date, out-of-fashion and definitely not what most of DoA's population is interested in seeing any more.

I do buy dolls second- (or third-, or fourth-, or whoknowshowmany-) hand, sometimes, and I'm not the first owner of a fair number of my collection. They're almost all in excellent shape, though, and the ones I bought new are still largely pristine. I take good care of my crew, and aside from some mellowing of their resin (Greening in Crane and Nightengale's cases, unfortunately. I *hate* that color. <_<), they've aged well.

    3. I'm always curious to see old dolls! I remember lots of dolls from 2003-2004 that I've never seen again. First releases of Souldoll, Lovelyhouse or Happydoll for example... I liked those dolls a lot but they are very rare to see now.

Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
Yes, I own seven dolls from Hypermaniac 2001~2003 releases that are not sold since then.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
yep, as much as I take photos of my newer dolls.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
not recently, but all my "old" dolls were bought second hand.

What state are these dolls in now?
They look "old" in the way that, they are different from the actual style of bjd. They look more like dolls and less like "people" if you understand what I mean. Also, of course, the resin show their ages.

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?
No... I don't mind if they are not popular. I'm very proud of my old doll collection and I enjoy taking photos of them.

    4. I personally prefer the ´old´ dolls over the newer ones! Most of my dolls are reasonably old and most of the sculpts I like are from the 2005/2008 time as well, I guess during that time, the aesthetic just appealed to me most. I have a Delf Chiwoo from 2006, a Volks Scarface Cecile also from 2006 and a Dive Seimei who was sold in I believe..2005? But I got him second hand. I still post them, even though I don´t take that many pictures. As for photo responses, well, my other dolls(with exception of my Switch Huisa, but he is more oldschool in style too)are not fashionable either anymore, so it doesn't really matter! In fact, I prefer people commenting or enjoying the photo's because of the doll itself and how it was presented, instead of because it's the newest thing.

They are all still in fine condition, sure they yellowed, but not in an ugly way, and I certainly don't let them gather dust because they are old. They're as loved as they were 6 years ago <3

I really like this topic! I've been wondering this myself, as I mainly look in the gallery for sculpts I love and the older dolls often get snowed under by the newer ones. It's good to know they're still there <3

    5. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
Actually, yes. I have a kid delf elf Ani that's discontinued.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
Sometimes I do. I used to and now that the doll's now a girl, I may start posting again. After I make more clothing.
Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
Dunno bout 'older' but I'm getting a vamp breakaway soon. =3

What state are these dolls in now?
Pretty darn good condition, actually. Granted, the elf ani is a lovely buttery cream color due to her age and how often I interacted with her, but she's in pretty good condition.

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?
Actually, I don't post them here anymore due to the whole not sure if they're even on topic anymore and not sure how long the sculpts will stay on topic. So I just enjoy the galleries that are here and post the pictures on other forums.

    6. Well...my CP Miyu is seven years old; I'm her third owner.

I think a lot of the missing dolls can be located in the closets of their owners, either waiting to give them to their children when they're older or to get back into the hobby later. Or maybe just as a remnant of their past. Even if I "leave" the hobby, I'll probably just pack away my girls for later on in my life.

    7. That is interesting! Do you think 'oldskool' dolls will at some point be declared off topic because the styles in ABJD have changed so much, they wouldn't be considered ABJD anymore?

I have to say, that would be a sad day for me. I think it's unlikely to happen, especially considering many of the moderators seem to still own old dolls and like the older styles(and they are the ones deciding, after all), but who knows?

    8. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
Volks Heath, SD13 Nono (oldskin), AngelRegion Warrick (company turned into neo angelregion, and let the warrick sculpt behind), and then my delf girls - Soony and Miyu

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
      yes, but not on DoA

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
all of these doll except my soony were purchased in the past year

What state are these dolls in now
SC, but I am potentially moving in the near future

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?
Everyone is in the database, but other than that and the occasional contribution to pic requests, I don't do anything with my photos on DoA

    9. DoA rules don't allow dolls to be retroactively declared off-topic. There is no reason to worry about dolls that have been here since the beginning suddenly not being welcome! :)

    10. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
Yes, I have an Luts Ani elf (on a mnf body)

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
Yes, when I have the time.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
No, I have never bought a doll second hand. But if there is a sculpt I want then It dosn't matter if it's old or new,

What state are these dolls in now?
As close to new as possible. I keep them in their boxes when they are not in use.

    11. CP Chiwoo is not sold anymore, right? mine is from 2004 and I would never let go of him. He's the only SD who's stayed during all this time simply because I love him. I truly do. Then I have a 2005 DOD Zen and my favorite. He is still in stock at Dream of Doll but I would not change him for all the BJDs/Limited dolls/or money in the world AND even for another DOC Zen, this head in particular is special and unique to me. He is like a 'son' to me, as weird as that might sound, I see him like that :) I have never experienced this kind of bonding with any other doll, only with my old ones: CP Chiwoo(Dantes) and DOD Zen(Kyoshi) <3

    12. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?

Of the 6 dolls that I own 4 are discontinued. Elfdoll Mir, Dollzone Celine, Dollzone Binli, Dollmore Ujee. I've owned my Mir for 5 years. The other sculpts are over 5 years, but the dolls are younger than that or of unknown age. For example, U-jee was one of the first Dollmore Kid sculpts, but I only got mine in 2011.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?

Yeah, though I haven't been photographing enough lately really.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?

Only discontinued/older doll that I got second hand was my Binli in 2010. Not sure what year she was made as she'd switched hands multiple times before me and had been modded too. I love her to pieces. I don't think the Slinky Neko Haroo sculpt is that old, though it is in more of an older style.

What state are these dolls in now?

I'm giving my Binli's body a little spa time because it has some degree of yellowing compared to her face. The one's that I'm original owner on, are all fine. Been thinking about redoing the blushing on my Mir's abs. I keep the dolls in a drawer when I'm not fussing with them (usually sewing or putting them out on the couch during movie night), and they are kept away from sunlight except during a few quick photoshoots.

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?

Everyone was photographed at Christmas, and everyone is in a database (even if they are the only doll for that sculpt in the database). I do however need to take time to do more photos of the gang because I feel it's important to spam older sculpts. I think what mostly stops me is that I have outside interests competing for time and a limited number of people who are really interested in seeing most of the sculpts that I own. Older sculpts do tend to get snowed under by newer sculpts, but (speaking from experience) for the fans of the older sculpts it does mean a lot actually find new pictures of beloved sculpts. It especially true for those of us less interested in the currently popular style of doll lines. The doll companies themselves seem to distance themselves from sculpts as soon as they discontinue them, which is disheartening as an owner of those sculpts too. I think three of my dolls went discontinued in the past year and a half. It left me feeling kinda gutted. DZ didn't even add either of my sculpts to their classic review page though other discontinued sculpts from the same notices were added. For collectors these dolls are art, but for the companies they really are just business.

    13. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?

I have two dolls that are over five (Volks Heath, Iplehouse Aaron) and two (SecretDoll Binu, IH Cocori) that are (or will be) five this year.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?

I don't post many gallery threads, but I do photograph them so they end up in Games Forum posts here.

What state are these dolls in now?

They're all in mellowed but decent condition, aside from the Cocori who has greened.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?

Not within the past two years. Not because I'm against it though (all of my older dolls were bought second hand), just because I now have the older dolls that I wanted, so I haven't felt the need to.

    14. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore? Many of my dolls are over five years old and not sold anymore (most are old Delf or MNF limiteds), but I do have a 2005 El. He's modded though.
Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA? I do and I sometimes put them on DoA.
Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand? Yes, see the 1st question.
What state are these dolls in now? Excellent or good considering their age. None are WS, so the yellowing isn't that bad. My MNF Shiwoo Elf, all my tanning Els (both MNFs and Delf) have still their default faceups.

    15. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
I have a Volks SDC Kaede (2004), a Volks SDC Kaede Sweet Dream (2007), and a YoSD Yuki (2007) though Yuki is still produced for special events every now and again.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
I still photograph them, but due to a busy real life I find it difficult to post any here.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
Not recently, but I do have my eye on a few sculpts that I hope will turn up when the time is right.

What state are these dolls in now?
My Kaede and SWD Kaede are both a mellow yellow, with SWD Kaede still sporting her default face-up. My Yuki is doing quite well and has only yellowed a little bit.

I adore older dolls. I'm more a fan of the old-school look of aBJD and find things I like in older sculpts more than in newer ones. Not to say I don't like newer sculpts. I have a Volks Ran that I fervently love, but she has the features of older dolls that appeal to me.

    16. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
Two of my dolls are over 5 years ago and discontinued. I have a Souldoll Tiffee from 2005 and a Mythdoll Yue from 2006.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
I still photograph them a lot but I haven't posted any pictures on DOA except for a box opening in years. Things just get buried so quickly in the Gallery that unless it's my best work, then it doesn't get posted here. I post photos regularly on a smaller forum, my Livejournal and dA.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
I haven't but I did buy my dream doll who got discontinued. The age of the doll doesn't put me off from buying them.

What state are these dolls in now?
My Mythdoll Yue is very yellowed but it's a deep colour that I've grown to love. She has a small dent in her headcap from a fall back in 2007 and she lost a finger in 2008. Her default faceup is finally starting to chip off on the lips but I never liked the faceup to begin with. The Tiffee has a crack developing in her knee-ball but other than that she's doing great. She's mellowed unevenly due to sun exposure while wearing clothes but it doesn't bother me.
Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?

As for what happened to the older dolls, some owners drifted away from the hobby while others don't share as much on the internet or can't find the time to take newer photos. The OP mentioned Serendipity dolls. DollnDoll bought the molds from Serendipity when they closed shop, so some of the older molds are being used by different companies now.

    17. I've come to realize that I'm kind of the same. Except for my Kamau, all of my dolls are over 5 years old and I'm still searching for a Seimei and a Kanon Louis, oldies from 'way back when'. But I do prefer the more realistic 'adult' proportions the newer dolls have, so my crew consists of older heads on top of larger bodies from (usually) different companies. Hybrids FTW!

Not too long ago I was at a meet-up with loads of dolls, old and new, and it struck me how different they are from each other. It's almost like they're different generations! I never actually realized how much our hobby has grown and changed until that moment.

    18. Interesting topic. I have often wondered where all the older molds went since I joined DoA in the beginning of 2007 … Some dolls that got posted very often back then just seem to have disappeared completely.

Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
I own seven dolls that are over 5 years old, but I am not exactly sure if all of them are not sold anymore. Definitely not for sale anymore: Soulkid Sweeni, Luts Lu-Wen, Luts Nanuri 07.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
Yes, I still photograph my older dolls and post them on DoA once in a while. I generally don't post in forums very often because I don't have the time.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
I haven't bought any recently but I have and I would do it again.

What state are these dolls in now?
My older dolls still look great, very little yellowing and no damage. All of my dolls are displayed in my room all the time and get a lot of admiration regardless of their age.

Do you own old doll sculpts and don't put them on the forum, why?
The only reason why I don't post pictures is because I don't always have the time. I don't really care if a doll I own is popular.

    19. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
      A homme-skin, short-legged Elfdoll Wu.
Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
No. I've been meaning to get back into the bjd hobby, though, so maybe someday soon.
Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
Haven't bought anything since late 08.
What state are these dolls in now?
      Acceptable condition.
Do you own old doll sculpts and don't put them on the forum, why?
I don't anymore. I took a very long hiatus from the hobby for health/financial reasons.

    20. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?

I dont think soom, sells namu anymore, but yeah him. and a juri from 05, also my school c and Sha are from 2008 ish..but I know they are still being sold.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?

I dont really do much photography anymore.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?

2 years ago I bought my Juri 05. I had wanted her since here release.

What state are these dolls in now?

I'm sure they've yellowed but I dont notice much. I keep them on a shelf, in a dark room. They are well taken care of. :)

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?

I guess im just not super active in the hobby anymore. Not really any other reason.
