Which do you prefer? “Cute” or “Hot” dolls?

Aug 18, 2024

    1. It depends on the personality and role in the story

    2. I think people have already posted great answers here. I think what people think as a "cute" or "hot" varies a lot depending on a person and their taste. Generally speaking I would be more on the "hot" side, if that means more mature looking doll. However, my perspective of "hot" is not the same as "sexy" or might not be always what is traditionally seen as a "hot" by the main media. As many have said here before, for my own dolls/OCs, it depends on a character and their personality/style. Some characters fall more on the "cute" side and other on the "hot" side. Yet, as already said here these are very limited categories. Not sure if this makes any sense at all... :sweat

    3. I want my dolls to be cute! And just a little bit childish. Big eyes, round faces. I find the ones that look like buff guys kind of off-putting sometimes ;^^ but sometimes pretty lady dolls are really nice, Gem of Doll 70cm girls are stunning.

    4. At this moment, I have Bao (my Puki PongPong) sitting in front of me on my desk. Perched on the printer/scanner next to said-desk? Jack. My ridiculously-foxy-for-a-guy-made-of-resin Iple "Tokyo Story" Tedros. Looking at the two of them, and then the crew as a whole... I can only say Yes. Both.

There are cool things about both sorts... and the ones who fall somewhere between the two. Or completely outside those bounds entirely.

    5. Cute all the way. No matter what they look like, they've got to give me the kitten feeling

    6. Somewhere in the middle, I guess?? I prefer adult bodies, but when it comes to faces I like the more anime/stylized looks. (My only current on topic dolls are a Minifee and an MDD, if that gives you an idea)

Also, I'm not trying to start an argument or anything, but to be honest, a lot of the BJDs designed to be "hot" or "sexy" make me kind of uncomfortable, although that's mostly limited to the male dolls, and I've always been weirdly disconcerted by those, lol. But female dolls with more stereotypically "hot" features don't bother me that much. (With exceptions, of course. Looking at you, AP)

I guess the above is sort of a tangent, but overall I'd say I'm somewhere in the middle, leaning towards "cute".

    7. It really depends on the doll for me and the character. I want my smaller dolls to be cute. I like to dress my child dolls like adorable children. Which stands to reason because they are children. My MSDs are also moderately dressed, as they seem like younger teens to me. I have some more mature dolls that I just like having look plain as well.

I like my more mature romantically inclined dolls to be somewhat attractive. A lot of them have romances in my story so I am going to want them to look nice with each other. Most of them dress in just normal clothes. I don't go out of my way to photograph them looking hot, but I do try for some romantic couple shots at times.

I don't see hot and sexy as they same thing. I like the mature dolls to be attractive, but I don't go around trying to make them look like they belong in an adult magazine either.

    8. I'd say cute, but then again I think Chucky is cute so my perception may not match up to reality

The way I see it "hot" has much more of a cool, mature, serious connotation, while "cute" is more childish and silly. My favorite proportions are 3-5 heads tall, which automatically come across as childlike no matter what features they have.

Even my bigger boys, while more mature in proportion, still have a "cute" vibe imo :chibi

    9. kind of in the middle, I think? I like dolls that look like young adults, but I tend to dress my dolls pretty conservatively most of the time. I do like hot dolls but I find it hard to bond with them. I feel like "cool" is the term I would go for. My cute dolls also tend to be dressed as adults as well, just with lighter color palettes and cuter motifs in clothing (ribbons, lace, etc). Child-like dolls give me the same bonding problem as sexy dolls do

    10. For the record Chucky / AKA good guy dolls were cute so the doll before it takes too much of the "demonic" presence expressions (especially in the movies 1-3) was a cute doll that's why it was a succesful film because the doll was a pretty doll a kid would like that after keeping it it showed demonic degradation and turned out horrible, from the other side Annabelle in the film was from the beginning a doll you would gift to your worst enemy hoping it will get alive and demonic and do everything horible. I would buy a good guy doll on the spot it was a cute doll in the very begining.

    11. Why would I want hot dolls? Can dolls even be hot? I'm not dating them haha I have a husband for that.

    12. "Cute" and "hot," kinda comes across as young and mature. There are plenty of people who I think would argue their partners are both hot and cute and would throw digital hands to prove the point XD

But as far as dolls, because they're small, they all come across as cute even when spooky.

But fantasy and spooky are the best for me. Like my murder buns definitely call in cute but also spooky.

I got my ff14 characters fall in the mature category that I'm shelling, but which more definitely fall into fantasy.

But I do like all kinds. I'm so bad and curating, I exist all across the spectrum

    13. I prefer kinda sad dolls, not like cute or hot. When I bought my first one I knew I wanted a grow elegant woman not a young girl or a teen. Still I like them to be neutral or a bit sad. Smiling dolls are kinda creepy to me.

    14. I am a gendered doll collector. Boys need to be "hawt" - handsome, mature, muscular. Yes, I am the potato chip collector, and I am not ashamed!
Girls need to be - hmm. Not cute, but not "hot" either. They need to be mature (for the most part). They need to have a self-possessed air about them. They must have attitude. The bitchier, the better.

    15. Firmly in the "cute" camp. :chibi
Almost all my girls are very "cute", lean a little more "mature" than sugary sweet but still would generally fall into "cute"!
I really enjoy "cool" and "scary" dolls too but don't have any and there aren't any concrete plans to change that any time soon.

    17. Sorry for the Off-topic, but t just reminds me of a situation I had at work yesterday :) I'd been recruiting a guy and I talked with my HR colleague and she goes "wait, so this guy is *not* going to work here? We were already shipping you two, guys!" And I was like, 'First off, he's married with a kid; secondly, he's *so* not my type" and we went onto the journey through her loving the tall, lumberjack type of guys (the potential employee sort of fitting the stereotype) and me going 'Oh God, NO!' each time she mentioned another manly trait she admires. To her surprise, I admitted I like clean-shaven, delicate-faced, "cute" but not overly effeminate dudes (and that I used to be into gothbois back in my early 20s) and that I really don't mind guys slightly shorted than me.

So, honestly, that's pretty much what I feel about my dolls: I have two main male dolls, one of them being unrealistically effeminate and someone I'd avoid IRL, because the level of self-centredness and narcissism behind such doll's human equivalents would be unmatched; and the other being just a cute-faced, but manly and mature-bodied guy, whose human equivalent I could totally envision dating happily.

I cannot see someone as hot if they don't have a tint, at least, of 'cute'. I mean, objectively I think some of the warrior-knight-vampire types that people make e.g. Santoria or Iple guys into are definitely handsome, but I'd sell away such a doll the minute I got it as a gift, for example. At the same time, the open-mouthed, big-eyed Volks or Switch guys with pastels and frills aren't my type either. There, the common mix of muscled bodies and round faces is off-putting to me. Again, I appreciate all the craftsmanship that goes into it, but I find it incongruous in terms of style. I mean, my dream is to one day own a volks boy for my volks girl, but he'd have to be on the plumpy body, with no muscle-definition to it. And he'd be purely cute, not hot, just like my volks girl is herself.

As for my two aforementioned guys, they're more realistic looking (Supia Lina & Migi Jina) and so are their dolly girlfriends (BC Kaorin and Supia Rosy, respectively). Again, these girls have very round, big-eyed and 'cute', girly faces, matched with often nude or just maturely-dressed, vampy, femme-fatale bodies.

    18. I prefer cuteness! Particularly when paired with a sad or stoic expression.

I'm conflicted with "hot" dolls because I think there's a distinction to be made between mature vs sexy. (There is also some overlap with cute and sexy, which I truly despise). To me, mature is very elegant and alluring, especially on men, and is usually quite tastefully done. But sexy is often not done tastefully and just gives off pornsick vibes. Think comically large busts bursting out of skimpy clothes. I don't like those at all.

    19. I think all dolls are cute, but I guess i prefer “hot”.
I like my guys to be handsome in a mature and stylish sort of way. (Also since doll bodies aren’t cheap I do want my guys bodies to look nice, otherwise it feels like I wouldn’t be getting my monies worth)

    20. I prefer cute but without appearing too childish/young. I definitely see the appeal in mature; "hot" sculpts, but I love big eyes and other facial proportions to lean on the cute end of the spectrum! I am definitely drawn to the muscular or curvy types for bodies as well, but often end up with teenage-ish looking bodies. My most recent purchase will most likely be the cutest (read: youngest) looking one in my collection rn, as it's a Romance Yul and that little button nose is just. so. adorable.
