It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Which do you prefer: Buying heads and bodies separate or complete dolls?

Aug 17, 2010

    1. My first dolls were whole dolls but I do have two where I bought the head and body separately. In both cases it was because the heads had custom faceups which I loved. One is a Pukifee multihead so all I had to do was buy a matching body from the same company. The other is a lati head and they are commonly hybridized with puki puki bodies so I had plenty of advise to go on and I didn't have to try to choose a body by myself. I'm glad I got whole dolls for the first couple of dolls but I love the dolls where I bought the heads separately because they are unique.

    2. I've only bought full dolls so far, but I'm thinking my first foray into frankendollies will probably end up being a DIM Larina hybrid. There are many heads I like, but not their accompanying bodies, so hybrids seem inevitable. ;)

    3. Hmm. I used to not mind either. I liked the idea of getting bodies for the dolls that were only sold as heads. That is a thing of the past now I guess. I prefer to get them both head & body together due to the resins being a different color every time even if the company is good there are still going to be differences in the mixture. T T;; However, about 2~3 of them in my family I had to buy special bodies for as I had no choice. It all depends I guess. But the question is "preference" so yeah, I do prefer to get them together. :-D

    4. Complete dolls. The only reason I have just a doll head at the moment if because I wanted him in a different size...but now Luts has their own custom doll system, so now I have a handsome practice head.

I don't want to worry so much about resin color matching, and since I am a little...obsessive about things, even the slightest difference in resin color would bother the crap out of me.

    5. I prefer buying complete dolls but sometimes I buy heads and bodies separately. Having a complete doll means I could play with them right away and the color matches better. Sometimes I really like a head and the company body doesn't work for what I have in mind, so I buy the head.

    6. It's always nice buying a complete doll, because you don't have to worry about resin matching (unless you're purchasing a hybrid). Although, depending on luck, you may find you can get a doll less expensive by purchasing in parts rather than all at once. Usually I find that this isn't the case, that it's MORE expensive to buy a BJD in parts, but there has been a time or two where I paid less by purchasing a head and body separately. I suppose it's just personal preference.

    7. i like buying in full unless i get an event head or if i really want a certain sculpt ill only buy that if you can buy it seperately. Darn =w= which reminds me i want to get a certain head but need marketplace access to get it....

    8. If I don't like the body, I buy them separately. People usually get pulled towards a doll because of the head, so no problem there. I'm more picky on the bodies.

I would prefer buying the full doll though since that means I won't need to pay for different shipping and customs.

    9. complete doll.. I think it's very hard to find a body with the same colour as the head. I will just spend my money on a complete doll as i no need to string them haha =x

    10. I prefer to buy the body and head together. It's cheaper, in my opinion. :sweat

    11. you are right. Separate shipping isn't cheap.
But for now i have a problem. just paid for my second full doll. now I surely know that the head doesn't suit the character i wanted. and i have no money enough for the head that is AT LAST available and suits perfectly.!!!:doh (Where is the wall here? - want to kill myself).

    12. I MUCH prefer buying full dolls. It's a more pleasant box opening experience, I have everything together right away.... But unfortunately, a lot of sculpts I'm currently interested in have bodies that don't work for the characters. I will have to start buying parts separate, which is going to cost a heck of a lot more, in some cases.

    13. I've been out of work since my interest was peaked by the hobby. So for me, I've been slowly buying bits and pieces when I can afford to. It's worked well for me, since money is extremely tight, and this way I'm not investing a huge amount at any given time. The sad part is, it's taking forever to get a full doll!
If given a choice however, I would love to purchase a full doll in one go.

    14. Actually, I prefer to buy a complete doll but I'm kind of picky, I like Crobidoll Jun's face but I don't like the body so I'm thinking of buying another company's body for him. But if it's possible, I want to buy a complete doll so I don't have to worry about the resin color or proposition of head and body.

    15. I'd prefer to buy a whole doll but sometimes this isn't the case. I've purchased heads I like but the matching body wasn't great. I've gotten some good matches and if not that's what an airbrush and blushing is for.

At the moment I'm waiting on a Loongsoul 69cm girl body for my DIM Kassia and a Doll Chateau baby body for my iMda 3.0 Nina head.

I love the fact that these dolls are so great to customise.

My only issue is though that having floating heads around bugs the crap out of me until I purchase their bodies - just can't stand it. I know some people can have heads floating around for years, I just can't do it.

    16. For a first-time buyer, I'd recommend getting a full doll. Resin matching and body proportions could become a point of frustration. :P

I prefer buying full dolls because I'm into photography and I want a complete subject to shoot. I have purchased heads and bodies separately (because I wanted Suwarikko bodies for my dolls, I was willing to pay a little extra), but those were special cases.

    17. I prefer complete dolls myself though my recent msd doll didnt come with eyelashes and i put them in myself and it was just fine :] lol but that's tiny stuff.

It's difficult to find bodies for heads or heads for bodies from separate companies cause of the skin dye lots i usually is never the same color. im very ocd sometimes and seeing just the smallest skin difference would drive me crazy. lol but that's just me.

If you buy from IH know one thing, their bodies and sizes are very different from other dolls its hard to find anything that will fit them outside of the IH website. including wigs n shoes. if u do end up with IH and want different clothes check to see if they do custom sizes or u will be disappointed.
My roommate bought an iple house "MSD" and she was taller, bigger curved, smaller head, thicker legs.
we got male pants thinking they would fit and her hips are to big for them. so just a heads up!

    18. I prefer to buy an entire doll vs buying the head first and body later... It is too much work trying to find skin tones close enough to one part or another for me to want to buy a separate piece. I am not saying it would NEVER happen .. just very unlikely.

    19. I am new at this, but I really enjoyed the fact that I could actually get closer to something I really wanted. Pose-ability is important to me and the face. I had to get very organized and enter the information I collected onto a spreadsheet to make my search easier and more enjoyable. It is like art to me and searching for treasure.

    20. I love your sheep photo. I am trying to collect sheep photos as reference material to paint them. They're adorable!
