Which do you prefer: Buying heads and bodies separate or complete dolls?

Aug 17, 2010

    1. I have been drooling over Iplehouse's nYID bodies! I would buy the head and body together, but yes I wish IH could sell more separate items.
I haven't seen any high heeled feet for the nYIDs in the optional parts, and I've wanted a interchangeable Rexy head for practicing face ups or different looks.
I personally would buy the head and body together because of fear with resin matching.

    2. I like having the choice. I really love companies that sells their heads alone so if I don't like the body, I can find an alternative. I don't fear color difference, I believe mostly everything can be matched with a bit (or a lot haha) of pastels. The proportions can be tricky though. It is much more convenient to buy to doll as a whole, but I love having the possibilities to do hybrids to really get the look and the poseability I want.

    3. I prefer buying whole bodies first, so I'm not worried about finding a match to the head or the bod I've purchased. But I wouldn't be opposed to buying a head first and then a body, I've considered doing such before ^^.

    4. I like heads and bodies seperately. It makes it cheaper for me.

    5. I much prefer buying the doll complete - resin matching becomes a non-issue, and there's little chance of me being distracted before I complete the doll...

Having said that - I've got a number of sculpts that never came with bodies anyway! I love the sculpts - but darn picking a body for these guys is difficult! Resin matching is near impossible with these sculpts since the resin is pretty unique to the sculptor... That and proportions are often awkward... anyhoo...

    6. I would prefer to buy a whole doll and that's what I've done so far, but now I'm replacing two bodies that I don't like, and that is kind of expensive after having purchased the whole doll. I sold one of the bodies I didn't like but it still puts me at a financial loss, and seeing as this is an expensive hobby I don't want that to happen again. So, I've decided that from now on I will just buy the head if I really like it but not the body if I think I won't like that part, as long as I can find a resin match before making the purchase. And there is a body that I like but I don't have a head to put on it, so I probably won't buy it unless I find a head for it.

    7. Personally, I prefer to buy full dolls. Usually because I find buying it all together doesn't cost as much as putting it together by part. A lot of the dolls I like have tons of parts and hard to find outfits, so it's not always easy to put them together that way. @-@ It's also better for companies that have inconsistent resin since you don't have to worry about matching! (o: If I do have to buy parts separately, I will as I have done in the past. Usually it's more of a last resort thing though aside from hybrids. ^^

    8. I'm not confident in my ability to pair up heads and bodies, so I like to buy them together.

    9. It actually depends on a couple of things. Generally, if the head comes in a gender/skintone combination I don't already have a body for, I prefer to buy it with a body. On the other hand, if the head will fit on a body I already own, I prefer to buy just the head. Much of my collection now consists of floating heads who share my various bodies. I find this very satisfying, as most of my dolls are so big that I generally don't want to mess with more than one at a time, and most of my important 'relationships' are between characters with different sexes/skintones, so I can photograph them together if I want to.

This is made a bit easier because I pretty much only buy dolls from one company, which makes 'hybrids' a lot less complex than they are with multiple companies' parts.

    10. If the doll comes the way you want it all together, then buying the complete doll is cheaper then head and body separately. Only if you need a different body for the head you want, then it would be necessary. Although I know of way too many doll sellers that have absolutely beautiful faces, but very weird bodies, or the other way around. I guess it really depends on what you have to spend, and what your willing to wait for, since I find that ordering the pieces separately can take longer.

    11. When I buy a new doll, it is important to me that the proportions are good. I can't stand big heads on too small bodies, or huge bodies with too small heads. So if I happen to get a doll home which isn't properly proportioned to me, I'll go looking for another body for the head. Then I'll keep the body spare for some other head in the future.
A lot of times I also just go for head-shopping. Bodies will be around of several types, but heads are made so and so many. and there are a lot of good matches out there.

    12. when I started I didn't want floating heads, I hated them! now I still prefer to get the full doll but if I find a head that I like I take it and then look for a body, maybe cheaper than the original :)

    13. I prefer to get the full set , Thats just cause I wouldn't know what to do with just the head or the body !

    14. I'm new in the hobby and right now it's the complete doll, but that is only if I love both the body and the head. There are so many great shops that only do heads, so at some point I know I'll end up buying body and head separately.

    15. If I can buy the head and body together I would, just because it's easier than playing russian roulette to see if the resin colors of your doll head and it's different body match... Although in certain sculpts and characters it's just not possible... Sometimes it just depends on the dolls, what you are doing with the head and body or if you have access and can get a full doll instead of creating a hybrid... Although sometimes having the hybrid is getting the best of both worlds... like the head of the doll you want and the body you want so... it can be a good thing or bad thing I guess I'm a neutral in this area because I have dolls on both sides...

    16. I prefer buying the whole body rather than just half of the body because, it seems uncomplete to be buying the body 1st or the head 1st unless the company only sells the head alone and does not sell the body. Another reason for buying a complete body is to avoid skin color difference because for what I know even from the same company sometimes the same skin color can differ a bit :o

    17. I prefer buying whole dolls if I can but that doesn't stop me from swiping up heads left and right. Hands and feet too!

    18. I originally wanted to have the perfect doll by finding the head I liked best and combining it with the body I liked best, but in reality it took so much research and stressing over resin-matches and neck sizes, which wasn't easy at all to find information about in some cases. I ended up with a head only (DOD's Bee-a) and no matched body. I've also ended up with other bits and pieces I bought without knowing beforehand who/what I was buying for, including a beautiful SD-size outfit and boots from DOD and 3 different pairs of jointed hands from DollZone. In short, I think I should have gone for a whole doll first, and then gone from there and mix-and-matched.

    19. I prefer buying heads and finding the body to match. I find I end up hybridizing almost all the bodies I have with many different heads. Hands too. Since their one of my pet peeves. XD. But I do admit when I first started collecting I bought a few dolls that were full sets or whole before I became more knowledgeable about companies and resin matches.

    20. I prefer to buy a doll as a whole. It's just easier for resin matching plus you already know that the body should be somewhat proportional to the head. And despite how much I love buying dolls as a whole, both of my SDs are hybrids, but that's what happens when you fall in love with heads on the marketplace.
