Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Which do you prefer: Buying heads and bodies separate or complete dolls?

Aug 17, 2010

    1. Right now, I just want a completed doll. The head's already attached to the body and I don't have to worry about modding or resin matching. However there are definitely sculpts out there that I'd want to hybridize with other bodies, if I ever got them.

    2. It just depends on the company/sculpt. I'm really new to the hobby and I'm getting ready to purchase my first doll, so I've been doing a lot of browsing. Usually I'm either really turned off by the face or the body, and then in love with a body from another sculpt/company or a different head.

    3. Complete dolls for me, makes it easier as far as resin matches go.

    4. Complete dolls are likely the easiest to work with, because you don't have to worry about the head fitting properly or the resin color matching. However, if you really want all the aspects of a doll to fit your preferences, you'll have to turn to hybrids. My wishlist consists of both heads and bodies! (Even my very first doll which hasn't arrived yet will be a hybrid of sorts; I asked Dollzone to put the head on a different body than the default.)

    5. I don't think buying the head separate from the body would work for me, cause I've only ever had complete ones, but I can see how it works for some of my friends in the community and they pull it off pretty well.

    6. I prefer complete dolls at the moment but that is following a mistake after buying a head and then ordering a body where the resin didn't match. I am going to need to do more research before I buy separate again I think.

    7. I prefer complete dolls because of easiness but I'm open-minded about buying hybrids too. I'm planning to purchase my first hybrid doll and have done many many hours of research about resin colors, neck sizes and proportions. It'd be so much easier and safer to buy a complete doll but sometimes it's not possible if you only like a head or a body. I hope my research is worth it and hybrid will turn out to be successfull!

    8. I think for me, while I'd enjoy trying to make a hybrid, I prefer complete dolls. I feel like I'd let the head or the body sit for too long, and it would gather dust. I'm pretty bad about finishing personal project, haha.

    9. For my first doll I went ahead and got the head and body together. I'm still new to this so I'd have no idea how to hybrid a doll, and Resinsoul is so well priced to begin with there'd be no point in doing so. I'd recommend that for any first doll though, it's much nicer to have one put together and ready to go and you hopefully won't have to worry about too much extra work right away.

Eventually if I see a way that it'd either look better or be cheaper to hybrid another doll, I might do so, but it's too early for me to tell right now. I'm still scared of the idea of restringing a doll, let alone hybrids haha.

    10. Personally, I can never see myself hybriding, but that may change. I think I would be too picky about the resin colors being ever so slightly different and it would get to me, so I'm willing to put up with bodies I don't love for heads I really want if it means not being irked by slightly different resins.

    11. I would rather go with a complete doll to save me from all the trouble of resin mismatch. But later on, I may consider buy heads and switch with the bodies I have. I would love to own a Dollclan Vezeto head some days, his sculpt is gorgeous.

    12. I prefer a complete doll, always, but I have this floating Junga Toy skull that I fell in love with, so it seems I'm going to be looking for a body in spite of myself! I've decided to not even bother trying to do a resin match on it, but to go with something that's completely different. Maybe a translucent or fantasy color? My only concern is the scale of the skull to the body.

Those of you who make hybrid dolls regularly have my admiration.

    13. At the moment it is for financial reasons that I am buying the body and the head separate from the same company, because I won't get any discount by downgrading the body type default to the head I want. Since it's just a different body type from the same brand, hopefully the resin colors won't be too different.

    14. I would prefer to buy the full doll, mostly due to saving on shipping and it'll just be more convenient to get the whole doll. However my last two purchases have been just the head, because they were on sale and I couldn't afford to get a body with them. I do have a doll body coming in for one of those heads, but I kind of wish I had just bought the whole doll, it would be a lot easier.

    15. I prefer complete dolls. That way I don't have to worry about resin matching, and also portions/the head fits properly on the body.

    16. I prefer full dolls, but often it is easier to buy seperate. Especially if it is an event head- I don't necessarily want to spend another 400 for a body I don't really want /need.

    17. I prefer completed doll when I love the body, but I'd rather get that just right than settle. I have two hybrids and one full doll (even though I had to buy the head separately). It's nice for things to fit together easily.

    18. I prefer the complete doll at this time, as matching resin colors seems difficult, and have seen posts where people were seeking info on matching neck size. It is difficult to find dolls with a facial expression and a body as well.
I see a face I like, but a body elsewhere with better fitting joints, more realistic sculpt.

    19. I definitely prefer getting a completed doll, since it just makes my life easier. I do want to make hybrids in the future, however I can tell it might be a bit of a headache when the time comes. I also might buy just a head if the doll is being discontinued and I can't afford the full thing at the moment, or if I found a discontinued sculpt on the secondhand market.

    20. As of the moment, I prefer ordering full dolls. Less hassle and no problems.
However, I always find myself looking at heads that I really like and bodies that I do not or the other way around.

I can already anticipate the stress from trying to make hybrids. I have a thing for resin and proportion matching, but I may also try it in the future.
