Which do you prefer: Buying heads and bodies separate or complete dolls?

Aug 17, 2010

    1. I am a complete wonk for resin matches so I prefer to get full dolls (case in point: finding a non-Elfdoll body for my Aden would have been a royal pain in the ass because NOTHING matches that old homme skintone, not a damn thing on this planet), but I do have one hybrid. I got my Yder a Fantasy Doll body to save some money and realized when I got it that a) the proportions were more pleasing to my eye for the Yder than the Delf body and b) it was a dead-on PERFECT resin match. It doesn't get much better than that.

    2. Haha it's funny for me cause I have absolutely no space in my house for full dolls and I love mobility like that of Popovy girls. However Popovy heads don't appeal to me. I'm still trying to figure out a good size and color match for that brand's body. In the meantime I purchase head sculpts that i love and do faceup on them and then probably will resell in future.

    3. I do not have any dolls yet, but I think I will almost always get full dolls because I do not want to have to play musical chairs with my heads and bodies, LOL. It just seems easier. And I am honestly more concerned with their beautiful faces and clothes and characters than I am with their bodies. :)

    4. If finance allows, then purchase of the whole doll is better. But so it turns out not always therefore happens I buy only the heads.

    5. I prefer to buy head and body together, but there's cases when I like just the head of some company and I want it in another body. Sometimes, the only reason that makes me don't buy both separately is problems with resin match.

    6. And I am honestly more concerned with their beautiful faces and clothes and characters than I am with their bodies. :)[/QUOTE]
Oh, but the heads out there that are sold alone!!!! They will make you squeal in delight! I want to get whole bodies and am lucky I found some that took me off the head kick. There are some incredible artists out there that faceup a head and sell it that hook you like magic. I almost bought two of them but then found whole hed/body dolls that would kinda work for what I wanted for a little more than the cost of the head in one case and cheaper in the other.

    7. I definitely prefer buying head and body together. Although I own BJD for a few years, I don't spend as much time on them as I'd like to and don't consider myself experienced enough to try modifications on dolls to make hybrids. And also, I'm afraid of bad resin matches... I find it a bit hard to see the proper resin matches for dolls heads and bodies, even if they are from the same companies, but different years. That said, I did buy head and body separately once, but only because I really love DIM's Larina and did not like the body - so I gave her a DZ body. It worked out really well!

    8. I am definitely someoe who preferes to have the resin matching so if i do buy heads seperately I have to already have a body in mind for the doll. I have quite a few hybrid due to various reasons and I don't have anything against hybrids either, they just tend to require more time I could have used otherwise.

So I do prefer to buy full dolls, but I have quite a few hybrids for some weird reason. At least all the resin matches fits pretty well so I don't have to worry about that any longer

    9. I prefer buying full dolls, hybrid sounds complicated and I don't especially feel like researching body-head compatibility><. Also, I prefer when the resin matches and it gets a little more difficult with hybrids.
Plus, there hasn't been any body so far from a doll I ordered that has irked me enough to want a different one.

    10. I love making hybrids! While it is nice to get a whole doll all at once and not have to wait for either the head or the body to catch up, I love the extra ability to customize a doll to my exact specifications that hybrids allow. I have one doll that's made of parts from 4 different companies at this point :P

    11. As I already have characters in mind when I buy a doll, I tend to hybrid to match their body shape. Some are buff, some are tall and thin and others are short and thin, and a lot of times, the body they come with doesn't match the body I envision them with. I don't worry too much about resin matching as it can be blushed to match, or in some cases, hidden with a turtleneck and gloves. I am planning to buy a full doll this fall in which the head is for one character and the body is for another. I also have two characters that are probably going to take some frankensteining to get them right.

    12. I prefer buying complete dolls because I am absolutely AWFUL at hybriding. plus, it saves more time for me and I can play with the dolls sooner!

    13. Full doll, definitely!
It's a good feeling to get a full doll in that already matches perfectly, can be dressed and played with right away.

Hybrids are such a hassle and I honestly hate hunting for a fitting body.
Since lots of my dolls are tan it's even worse, since matching tan skintones is so difficult :sigh

    14. Definitely prefer full dolls... Also because a lot of times the places that only sell heads or something will only sell them without default faceups, which I can't really work with right now. Hybriding also seems extremely scary from a newbie's standpoint, haha.

    15. For first doll I bought both head and body with make up as I want to play just unpacked it) Now I want my second doll. And I think it will be a hybrid.

    16. Full dolls for sure... spending time looking for a body for a head or vice versa that will match is something I find draining. If I can get the full doll then I'll do it! Although I really appreciate when companies or artists that only make head leave suggestions as to the best size and resin match for their heads and bodies from other companies ^^

    17. I own complete dolls and hybrids. I don't mind as long as I love the aesthetic. I own a doll which the body is lighter than the head and rather noticeably. But the body suited the character for it and I blushed the body up and the head to give it a better match, as I wanted the skin colour to have a light tan.
So I guess I find the aesthetic a higher priority than a skin match x) Because I may find a very good colour match but I hate the body

    18. I personally prefer to get a full doll but if I don't like the body, I'll see if only the head is available and try to find a better body. I did that a lot in looking for a first doll. I ended up just getting a full doll for my first doll (Still in the mail). I care a lot about resin matches and I really want to learn more about them before trying to buy the head and body from seperate companies.

    19. I prefer full so I don't worry about resin matching. However, I don't mind switching up body and head if it's from the same company.

    20. I like full dolls... I sort of dislike getting heads and bodies separate, mainly because something might happen to change my finances before I get the second part. Even if I could get them at the same time, I just love getting them all assembled and ready to dress and take photos of! It's nice to be able to properly meet them right out of the box! : D
