Which do you prefer: Buying heads and bodies separate or complete dolls?

Aug 17, 2010

    1. Yeah, I feel like as a beginner whose background is in pullips, with two solid options (sucky stock or an obitsu), I don't have much experience in any kind of hybrids, its just safer to stick to the full package option. The idea of hybrids definitely fascinates me so I would love to try them out in the future..but with more practice, like I said :thumbup Once I get into something I want to learn everything about it so I imagine hybrids are less of a choice and more of an inevitability lol.

    2. I prefer to buy full dolls simply because I have never NEVER bought a body for any of my floating heads, which perhaps is a skill issue on my part ig lmao.

Buying heads however is great when perhaps it's a limited item and you're low on funds at the time

    3. I prefer to buy complete dolls, but I have been tempted to hybrid! Especially with artists who only offer heads or if I have a specific vision for a character's appearance. But I'm afraid of spending a lot of time/money on mixing and matching bodies for it to not work out ^^; then I would have to either find parts that do work or resell haha

    4. If both the head and the body matches The Vision I have, then I would like to only buy complete dolls so that I know all the parts fit, the colors match, etc

If not then I love sites that make it easy to buy the heads separate so I dont have to buy a whole doll to keep the head and sell the body alone - v -''

    5. Not quite I prefer buying completely dolls, though it's simpler indeed, just my taste for skin colour has made hybrid quite complicated. I have Iplehouse peach gold, grey, ebony, fairyland tan and potentially dodollsdream wayward wind. I admit that it would be easier if I have all white or normal skin so I could choose separately the head and body I like. Anyway that has made me more cautious when buying dolls - Only when I love both the body and the head.

    6. I prefer to buy full dolls if it's possible! No worrying about resin matching and no worrying about the proportions being off. I only buy the head and body separate if it's an artist head and doesn't come with a body. In those cases, I'm usually tracking down bodies that will fit proportionally, match the color I need, and have decent owner reviews. It's a lot of looking at measurements, seeing what the artists suggestions, and tracking down owner feedback. To me, it's a big hassle, so if I have the option of buying a full doll, I go for it. I'd have to really hate a doll body to buy only a head when a full doll is an option. For instance, my SDF65 body is much more muscly than I'd like for the character the doll represents, but the engineering is good and proportions are good, and since I rarely see the doll's six pack anyway, I kind of forget that he's sculpted mega buff. I'd be much more tempted to buy him a separate body if he was a bad poser or had aesthetic details I disliked that weren't going to be covered by his clothing.

    7. I just recently completed my first hybrid! I was so nervous about it, but I’m very pleased with the final result. I researched as much as I could, but there’s still a ‘leap of faith’ in hoping it’ll work out.

I plan to be (mostly) done buying dolls (especially SDs, because of space) but I knew I wanted a genderless doll body since I started in the hobby (Luts’ muse body was one of the earliest bodies I liked, although the body I ended up getting I preferred (Switch’s Labyrinth)). I also wanted a head sculpt that I knew would complement and be in proportion to my other SDs; Switch’s sculpts (although very, very beautiful) have larger eyes/facial features than my other kinda pin-headed SDs and I worried it’d look out of place, which was a dealbreaker for me. Luckily the hybrid worked out very well so I got everything I wanted:XD:

I’d say I still prefer buying a full doll, but I think there’s a time and a place when putting together a hybrid can make more sense— especially if the body doesn’t pose well or isn’t what you’re looking for aesthetically.

    8. I prefer to buy full dolls as I'm currently working on getting rid of a floating head addiction...
However, buying the head first and then deciding on the body is so tempting ( financially as well :wiggle )!

    9. I prefer complete dolls since I'm not very good at looking for resine matches and stuff. In fact, I just bought a Trinity head alone and now I'm kinda regreting it. Not because of the head itself, I LOVE the sculp but I'll need eventualy another body for her and now I don't know if I want her to be a Trinity or a Lusion.

    10. I’ve thought about making a hybrid, but making sure the resin matches and that the head/body fit together has put me off so far.
Bjds are expensive enough that I don’t really want to risk the hybrid not working out, so I’ve stuck with complete dolls so far.

    11. I’m fine with both hybrids and full dolls; it depends on the character’s vision. I also had a situation where I bought a full doll but later decided to change the body.

    12. It’s definitely easier to have the complete doll, but I don’t mind in the case of a certain sculpt of body I’ve been after. I’d be willing to wait as I look around to complete the doll fully.

    13. A large percentage of dolls I have are hybrids. I've tried the simpler route of buying an entire doll or buying the official body for a head, but in the end, if it doesn't match the character then no amount of satisfaction about perfect resin match and neck posability can make this work.

Honestly I've also been super lucky with hybrids. I've rolled the dice multiple times and somehow it's worked out for me:
      - Delf NS on an old Supia body (90%)
      - peakswood on a Shinydoll thaasa body (90%)
      - Little Rebel NS on a DF-H yellow body (100% match)
      - Old Delf BW that I had blushed white on a new ALM body (95% match)

    14. I personally prefer buying completed dolls. I am no artist and do a faceup to save my life. I also do not know how to string a doll and rather pay the extra $$$ to not have to worry about any of that. Don’t get me wrong my first bjd was a custom artist done up blank head where I later just had to buy it a body. However, for my sanity give me the completed doll.

    15. I prefer buying completed dolls, or at least strung and with face up and have both head and body from the same batch and company. I have 3 heads on their body, they are without face up right now ( bought blank, don't know if I want to do face my self or send out..). I have one there is hybrid (artist head, had to find a body and again missing face up and body blushing) the rest is full dolls or at least with face up. I have found out, that I like more to have a "complet" doll, to take out of box and dress up, rather to do all my self. - I love all my doll, I just don't know when those 4 get their face up.

    16. I think I prefer buying both together then I know they’ll match. There have been times I’ve gotten event heads and didn’t have the money to get a body. By the time I did, I couldn’t find a match. It makes me sad.:(

    17. I have to syop buying just doll heads. It's stressful finding a color match, especially as a beginner. I either can't find the body proportions I want, or the color, or the head I have is a ridiculous size.
      It's exhausting.

    18. I keep buying heads on their own because it feels less expensive that way, since I'm buying the doll in multiple parts instead of all at once. HOWEVER then i keep going "oh i can buy this head now and get the body later" instead of getting bodies for the heads I already have OTL
