Which do you prefer: Buying heads and bodies separate or complete dolls?

Aug 17, 2010

    1. I completely understand why people would buy them separately but to me t just isn't worth the hassle. It certainly makes the doll more unique though and in the case of a beautiful doll that isn't good at posing it would be helpful.

    2. I have to say , i prefer both. Sometimes it saves some money when you buy head separated ,but it's sometimes so hard to find fitting body for them , all the colours, faceups , sizes ,aagh. *Sigh*
And ofcourse it's sometimes more fun to get the whole doll so you don't have to wait till she/he is ready for action , you only have to dress them up and, DONE ;'DD

I have bought half of my dolls as separated and half as fullsets XD

    3. About almost five years ago, i have been dreaming of just owning one doll... And that's a Dream of Doll A&D Ver.2. On that wonderful dream, he's complete... So no matter how hard it is, no matter how crucial the circumstances it's "do or die" ima get him complete! ^^y

    4. It doesn't really matter to me, I have both. The first time I bought a head and body I was worried I wouldn't be able to get the head on the body right but it was pretty easy so I tried it again. It is nice to have a full doll delivered too but I think it just depends on your preference.

    5. Depends. If the head is perfect for what I have in mind, but the body is 'meh', I'd purchase the head only (after checking if there isn't something better in general) and look for a fitting body.
If it's a great combo, why look further? Skin color match is guaranteed as well.

Generally I prefer to buy head with body. The rest (eyes, wig, clothes etc.) is likely going to need customizing to become what I envision anyway, so I don't care about that too much.

    6. matching heads and bodies is hard over the Internet. like i have a what luts called a delf head that ive been trying to match a bodie for. I have delf sized dolls. this head is not a delf head. im pretty sure it closer to a 70cm sized doll. but since ive never seen what a 70cm sized doll looks like anywhere but on line im not sure. so now i have the problem of buying and unknown sized body. and matching skin tone with other companies is a headache too. not everyone has the same idea of "Normal Skin" some company's are lighter, some are darker.

so in general i prefer to buy a doll full-bodied. or at least get the head and bodie form the same company.

    7. I really, REALLY prefer buying a whole doll. It's just so much fun opening the package and having a whole body/head in there. But my biggest reason lies with the bundle of floating heads I have, and my terrible will-power when it comes to buying them bodies. :(

I often reason that the head is the important, limited and valuable part of the doll, and that I can just purchase a body later. I've tried the "shared body" thing, and for some reason it just feels really wrong. :/ I always wind up switching the original head back soon after a photo shoot or other activity. So I'm left with purchasing new bodies... and every time I get ready to do it, I seem to find some other shiny that needs purchasing instead.:sweat

    8. I really prefer complete dolls, because then I can be sure that all the parts will fit together. But sometimes that's just not possible. Some companies just don't sell bodies, and if one of their heads happens to be the only perfect option... Well.

Making hybrids is kind of scary. I have a body underway for my LLT Roderich, and whereas I'm really excited that my doll will be complete soon, I am also worried that the body might turn out to be a bad fit resin-wise or in terms of proportion despite my research. If it is, will I care? Or will I be happy with it anyway? I don't know. In any case, I hope all will be fine...

    9. Let's do the math. Currently I own 4 dolls: 3 hybrids + 1 complete original = I'm hybrid-crazy

Actually I do prefer buying complete dolls, since I know the head and body will have the same color and proportions will be good. It's easier, less having to worry about these little things.

However, in some cases you just have to hybridize to get what you want. 3 of my 4 dolls have Luts heads and I hate Luts bodies + I wanted for my Lu-Wen and `08 Wintery to be female, so I had to make it work another way. I did. I like it. Everything's just peachy.

I wouldn't recommend hybridizing to newbies, though. There are tons of resin matching threads but when you look at companies like Luts ect. ,whose resin color is different from batch to batch, it can be damn hard to find a doable match you like. And just trying around can get very expensive let alone downright frustrating if someone's just starting out. For beginners I'd rather suggest going with a complete doll.

    10. Im more tilted towards complete dolls. However, there are many times I bought my heads and bodies seperately. I guess buying seperately is inevitable especially when the doll/mould you want is sold out or hard to find. Or when you want a different body other than the default.

But overall, I do prefer fullsets if I can help it. XD

    11. I really prefer buying whole dolls. It's nice having them whole and ready to be dressed, played with, and loved.
I have several heads at home and I'm always so hesitant to invest in a body for them because the body might not match the head. We all know those stories of resin colors changing from batch to batch, right? Then comes proportion, neck sizes. It's so stressful and especially time consuming to dig up all the different threads to find all the information you need.
Then, if I choose to purchase the body and it doesn't work out, I'll have to spend more time trying to sell the body at a loss. It's too much hassle and I'm sad but those heads will always remain as a head only.

    12. it depends on what i can get at the time, i got my migidoll heads when migi was only selling the heads and not the bodies. So i opted for the head, same with my ocean moon hwa-lan. though my IOS blood and Crobidoll yeonho are both head+body, which i like because i don't need to fuss with the parts or worry about bodies right then. my Eluts matthew will be head+body too. Sometimes it's just easier for me to get the whole doll off the bat!

    13. I've just been sticking to whole blank dolls and full sets. The blanks are good for me because at first when I was new to the hobby I wanted to try everything I could (faceups, making cloths ect.) I'll only really get a full set if there's a deal that's just too good to turn down :3

    14. I don't have a preference, but I LOVE hybridization, so very often I end up getting the heads and bodies seperately, or sometimes I can only afford the head at the time so I but the body later.... but there's something satisfying about just GETTING a doll and not having to wait for all its parts to arrive. > _ <

    15. I like getting the whole doll, but in the case of Dollfie Dreams, it's so easy to swap heads and what not, that I'd be content with getting different heads XP. I want to get the 01 head, but it'll share bodies with my current DD until I can afford another body

    16. I am trying to figure out what my preferences are. I have bought many heads, and a few bodies, separately. I like making the selections, studying over the faces and bodies first. I have creative urges that are driven by the question "what if I tried this"...[curiousity?] ~I'm even thinking of trying some very out of proportion combinations. I feel more like the doll is really mine as I do customization, which includes body/sculpt matching-planning.

Right now I have about equal heads and complete bodies. Most of the complete ones are all one company as first created. Only a few are hybrids. I have purchased many heads. This is because I want to do face ups. I've been a portrait artist for years, but I am new to bjd/sculpt painting. So I love to find a head needing a home, even if it is unpopular, as long as the price is right. The experimental ones I mean. I enjoy the thought of giving these dolls something special. I'm still very much in the discovery phase of my doll collecting. I want to see all kinds of dolls and make my selections of which will remain as the ones I deeply bond with.

Unfortunately, heh, I* kind of BOND with all of them I get. I don't want and can't keep as many as I have now. It is not going to be easy to make the choices as to which will be re-homed. And whether to split their heads from bodies. So far, I've sought out people who really want a particular doll. I can't quite shake the feeling the dolls are beings with awareness. Intellectually I know they are not, but my heart -- well, I kind of feel their presence? I want them to treasured. And to find their RIGHT body/head combo.

It is very interesting to me to learn about why people put certain bodies and heads together.

    17. It depends entirely on the company. I personally care more about the head than the body, but if the body is not very good, then I would just buy the body from another company.

    18. I prefer to buy a full doll over a single head. Mainly because it takes me forever to buy a body. I seem to get side tracked. However if there is no other option like in the case of my Junga Skull then I'll do it.

    19. Depends on the doll. I don't like having a floating head or body, but I'd rather buy separately to get them right for me. For example, I love my AoD Gu and he's perfect as a full AoD b/c I love the head AND body. But for my DZ Mo-B/DL/AoD frankendolly, The DZ Mo head was perfect, but I don't like DZ bodies...so I got him a Doll Leaves body, which was great, but I hated the hands, so had to get him some AoD hands. lol

    20. I prefer complete dolls cause looking for resin matches can be such a hassle, but alas, some companies sell only heads so it's inevitable that someday I'll have to order one of my resin babies separately. (and that 'someday' might be soon >>;;; )
