"Who are you wearing?" - Knowing the specifics of wigs, eyes & faceups for your dolls

May 15, 2010

    1. I remember some stuff, but not others. I like to buy secondhand and handmade, but I rarely remember where those come from, only if I really love it. The only thing I know is my girl's eyes, and that because I waited so long to order them and I was so picky.

But honestly it bothers me that some people act elite about the items their dolls have. Like so and so brand shirt or eyes. I do not care how much a doll's clothes are or if they are a fancy brand. That does not make them look good. I know a lot of people buy brand because they like it not just the name, and I have seen brand stuff I love, but I am not willing to spend the extra money - as I am a recent college grad and so is my husband and we still have not found career positions.I am the same with my real life clothes though. I have no idea what brand my stuff are, and lots I do not know where it came from. I hate shirts and stuff with brands like Guess or LV all over them. Give me something unique any time over fame. If I like it, I buy it. I can see the benefit of keeping track of it for resale or insurance or whatnot, but as I do not generally buy brand name stuff, it would not matter for my stuff anyway.

    2. People have notes and spreadsheets? Wow! I'm impressed  My memory is really great for details, so I just remember everything (I study biology, so this is kind of what I do?). I could never tell you the number of Captured in Glass eyes that, say, Nora has, but I can pull up the color chart and easily tell you which pair it is. And I know the size because so far I've stuck with company sizes, I tend to like the default eye/wig sizes. I have lots of stuff that I have no idea where it came with because it came with second-hand dolls. It doesn't bother me. And I'm not trying to remember the stuff I do remember. I just...remember it

As for the importance of brand names, umm. I don't think it's important per se, but I do tend to like more costly companies like Another Space. This is because you really do get what you pay for in dollyworld... Something I learned the hard way by trying to save money and being vastly disappointed in the quality when items arrived. So now instead of buying lots of cheaper things I try to buy a more expensive thing every once in a while...quality over quantity. I try to buy secondhand but often people actually want more than the item is worth! D:

    3. I know where I got my things from. I figure if I ever get tired of dollies (psh, like I ever would. haha) then it'd be easier for me to list off what everything is when I was ready to sell them.

    4. I buy almost all my stuff secondhand, so I only know what they are if they have a tag. I don't plan on reselling them anyway.

    5. Hmmm, I'm not sure how well I remember the stuff I have for my dolls. I can almost always remember what company any given item came from, but I don't always remember names, and if it's just identified by numbers I am COMPLETELY lost. For instance, I know I have a few pairs of Everpurple eyes, and I could tell you the sizes of them by looking at them, but certainly not the numbers of the colors for any of them. If I saw a chart with all of them on it I could probably point out what each one is, but I have no idea off the top of my head. I know Loa has a Monique Jojo wig in Carrot and Clover has a Tinybear wig in Cinnamon Swirl, but because they have actual names for the styles and colors it makes it easier for me. And as far as clothes goes, I can tell you immediately whether it's a piece from a Dollheart set or something, but I may not remember the exact name of the set it came from.

I could tell someone the basics of all my dolls' stuff if I were asked, but some items I can't be real specific on.

    6. So interesting to note that most here seem to keep a decent, if not perfect, track of what they've bought. In all honesty, I wasn not really "in" on the hobby when I started this over four years ago, so I was not really up with the ideas on how best to deal with them back in the beginning. I've slowly been changing my practices as I've been learning how other people deal with all their doll related things. (Trying to become a better dolly mommy? Or just more consciencious about my hobby?)

That's a wonderful idea! I think I might have to try something like that - although I might not want to keep a full list of prices . Might be a bit too frightening. ;)

True, it does seem as if some people come out acting elite about the items they buy for their dolls, and more than anything it makes me feel like some kind of...poor excuse for a doll owner that I've not been as meticulous in my keeping track, or for buying things on Ebay instead of name brand companies. Much of what I own, sadly, especially in the way of wigs, is "got it from Ebay".

I have to admit that I went through my...sadly extensive...collection of dolls and I was surprised by how much I did know. I think I really like the idea of keeping better track of my items, if only for the posibility of needing to resell them later. I now love this idea of a spreadsheet (although I suck at making one ) and I think that from now on I'm going to keep better track of at least the seller I buy something from, even if the seller is unsure of where they got the item.

I'm glad so many people responded to this! Thanks for all your imput!

    7. I am rather exact on this, I know what my dolls wear, where it came from, who made it and what size and colour it is...if I ever knew. Sometimes it is a little harder if I get it on the MP rather than from a company, but as a rule I know. Hell sometimes I even know who I bought it from 5 years later

    8. I am very exact about this. I know precisely the company, colour, and style number of my doll's wigs. It's the same for eyes, clothing, and accessories. Sometimes I list them when taking pictures. This is partially due to a habit from my other interest, lolita fashion, because specific "outfit rundowns" are common and encouraged. However, I also do it for another reason--so that if someone else sees my pictures and thinks, "Wow! I really like those eyes!" they can buy a pair for their own dolls. :3 It saves the trouble of asking and gives them all of the necessary information.

I also like to have this information on hand if I resell something--my buyers will know exactly what they are getting. And, if I ever need to find replacements, I won't have to search around and hope the company still has the product information up so I can figure it out. Honestly, I like precision.

    9. I don't have a whole lot of doll-specific items I've bought yet, but I do make it a point to remember where everything came from, because I believe in giving credit where credit is due. Since I'm not completely responsible for the way my dolls look the other people involved are deserve recognition for it too! I don't always remember the color, but I make it a point to remember where it came from and what style things are.

The spreadsheet idea is a great one, though. I'll have to keep that in mind if I start buying things on the marketplace.

    10. I have a pretty good memory, but I prefer to keep the company tags / lists for each doll's belongings - in case I need a replacement or want to tell someone where I got something I don't use too often.
I have no problem remembering what type of eyes I have bought since my dolls never change their eye color (there were no color contact lenses in their age :sweat)
However, I did loose track of some of the wigs because I originally bought these from the market place, and the owner had no idea of where they came from (:
I don't have that many clothes (yet) so i can easily tell where I got them. I have a lot of shoes though, but these come either from leeke or from luts, so no problem remembering either.

      As for other people's belongings... as long as they can spin me in the direction of the website / craftsman / seamstress / whatnot that made the items, I'd be fine. Besides, I can see something much more appealing while looking for that particular item ^__^;;

And as to the third question regarding remembering... I can't remember where I bought clothes or jewelery for myself. There are so many things that I just _have_ that I don't bother with remembering.
IMHO remembering every single detail of every single item takes a lot of precious mind space that could be occupied with much more important things :sweat

    11. I always remember the particulars of my doll's and their accessories. I have a mind for factual information like that so I remember the details.

I have a friend who can't remember the dolls that she owns. It's up to me to remind her that yes, that one is a tan Lishe. I've made her a little cards letting her know what they are in case I am not around. She just doesn't put names with faces very well.

    12. I started off in the hobby with good intentions of keeping a record of everything I bought etc., but tbh,I find when you have a lot of dolls it gets really difficult to keep track because you tend to buy quite a few different items and from various places. I have managed to keep my DoA transactions by downloading them, and also my Paypal transactions, so if need be I can ususally track items that way.

    13. I know Shinta is wearing a Monique, didn't find a brand name on Anje's wig but it looks great on her and that's what's most important to me. I don't keep records. Whenever I think an item would really be an asset to one of my dolls, I buy it. Did go wrong with a pair of eyes once. Turned out they made Shinta look angry.

    14. I know where 90% of my things came from, but certainly not down to wig number. Somethings I've bought used, and if the seller doesn't know or doesn't mention where the item is from, then I don't know either...

Knowing where things are from isn't something I commit to memory, I just work that way. I suspect that if you feel you must keep track of things because you are somehow expected to, and you have to make spreadsheet to do so, the hobby isn't a joy to you any more.

I think it's very nice when I see a perfect wig/pair of eyes/item of clothing and so on and ask the owner where the item was bought and receive the answer "It's an X from Y", but I have absolute understanding for if people can't remember or never knew. It can be a bit frustrating, though - because then you know that perfect something is out there, you just don't know where...!

    15. I'm able to tell where I got the stuff, the size etc., but I'm not able to remember the name or number of a wig for example.
That's just too much after owning like 15 pairs of blue eyes, it's enough to know I got them from Dollmore, Leeke etc. x_x

    16. I've never kept detailed records, or a spreadsheet or anything like that, and there are some items I've purchased from the auction sites or second-hand in the Marketplace that didn't come with any "details" so-to-speak, but typically I can rattle off what most of my dolls' things are and where they came from with a little thought. Occasionally details escape me... the exact number of Yomi's limited Mystic eyes, for instance, or the name of the company that made Cammeron's fur wig... but more often than not they don't.

It really surprised me how much I could remember about the outfits and such when I was going through and doing an inventory of the collection for our insurance company last year. (I think my storage system helps with that. I store wigs, shoes, eyes and clothes in their original bags or boxes if I have them, and I always keep the bits of multi-piece sets together-) I hadn't expected to recall things in that much detail.

    17. So what are your thoughts?
My thoughts and convictions tell me it is just related to the personality and way of doing of everyone, not only about BJD, but in any aspect. Personally I am curious and like knowing the possible, or at least having a basic idea, of what I have always it is something important for me. BJD do are. Other thing is being able to keep everything in mind.

How many of you out there actually know what your dolls are wearing?
Maybe I know the information I know, although not every detail, because of the way I decided who (Which characters) my BJD would be (One Piece manga and anime series ones). I found out by a simple wig that I will never forget. If I tell it by head I will say it was a "Luts DW-14 peach", but if I check out the profiles I keep of my BJD (I note down and save everything I buy to remember it) I will point it is a "Luts 'DW-14' For DELF (Peach)". That is the difference many times.

How much of where they came from do you actually know?
Some people may think I know much and some other that some few. Relatively recently I discovered glass eyes all my BJD use (Although in different colour and/or size) are originally from Volks. About make ups something quite similar to wigs deal happens to me. For instance, I know my Delfs's make ups were made by Luts (CP), but not exactly who in there made them. What I matter the most is where my BJD came from (I got all my BJD at their companies), who made them, their make ups, their eyes and wigs (I always keep them in mind in case I need replacements and buy several of the ones I am afraid will be over at stock in a short) they use, but sometimes even their clothes and shoes and so on.

    18. If I'm lucky enough to get the company name, model, and size, I'm very good about remembering later on. I don't get too fussed if I don't know, though, unless it's a wig/eyes that I love the quality, then I want to know the company so I can buy similar wigs/eyes.

    19. It usually freaks me out when people can tell me exactly who made their wigs and eyes. I have all the sellers I bought from saved so I can buy from them again, but in terms of knowing them by name... I'm not quite that bad.

I think knowing things like that is more... how do I say it? Fashion-forward? In terms of, 'Oh, my doll wears 'this' designer'. It's just my opinion, but to me its a bit... stuck up. D:

    20. Hmmm. I keep a track of certain styles and colours of wigs and eyes because I like the variety amongst my characters. Also, if I like a certain company's wig fibres over another, it helps me keep track of the ones I like most. I have a few 'unknown' wigs and I have no idea where they're from or what style they are. I keep it in writing rather than by memory. XD
