1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

"Why are BJDs so expensive?"

Dec 7, 2004

    1. I have Volks dolls from several different years, and I can assure you that my new UV protect boy made only two months ago is very high quality, and better than my oldskin boy. I'd also like to know what topic you're referring to since I've never heard anything about people being dissatisfied with Pureskin resin.

    2. Ah, I knew I was forgetting something! :doh I edited it to add the wig. ^_^

    3. the workmanship. How details they did to crave out the structure of the dolls. The face up. The time, the love they made out. This is the thing why cost them I expensvie. This is wat i believe. xD

the creation from the real creator of the doll. Means the Dollmaster. How much effort they put in. Is like a master piece. And also this makes me why I wanna get them too, even though I'm from a medium class family with a little suffer from financial. But I still fine my way to save and to earn to get them back!

    4. To add to all other hobbies being expensive in relation to the BJDs... Anyone own horses? There's thousands of dollars poured into it even before you have to feed, house, and keep it healthy. These dolls are dollars well-spent. :)

    5. I think that half the reason dolls are so expensive is because of the health risks involved in casting. Unless an area is VERY well ventilated and the staff have proper masks, there's a big risk of major resperitory problems (resin poisoning).

    6. Somebody said in this thread that the BJ dolls are not expensive. Hah! It pretty much depends. Maybe in the USA 500$ isn't that much for some people, but in Poland, it's the earnings of 2 months for your typical shop worker. And it is the cost of a msd with a wig and eyes and shipment.
Yes, the dolls are pretty expensive from my point of view. Still, I know I will buy a few at least. I only have to earn and save up enough. Because it is well worth it.

    7. At them moment I don't even make that much ^_^;; My only chance of getting a large ABJD is to wait until I have a well established job, when I'm not wondering if I can pay bills after I buy a doll. My first one was a gift, and I want a second one... but that's not going to happen for a few years.

I do not begrudge them their cost though. I still love them. I've had plenty of cheaper dolls in my life and I can fully appriciate the work that goes in to making a quality doll. I don't wish the dolls were cheaper, I wish I had a better job. I'm workin' on it! :)

    8. Yeah, I also don't wish for the dolls to be cheaper, I'd just want to have more money.
Fortuantely there is my friend puchiqa here in Poland and she will make the first doll for me for quite a cheap price, in order for me to be able to make clothes and everything for sale. I want to have a tanned El (MNF though) in the future, and a MNF Shiwoo... and many others... thus I have to find a job or soemthing to buy them. But it's not too much money. If they were cheaper, I think many people wouldn't love them that much.

    9. - They are like artist dolls in the US - here is an example of a very successful and popular artist:
      http://www.thetoyshoppe.com/dolls/himstedt/index.html?gclid=COje99vawYgCFTUNFQodkFOrLQ

      - I don't know about the Yen, but the value of a dollar fell repeatedly compared to the South Korean currency

      - They take a longer time to manufacture than dolls that are mass produced with a machine.

The one I could never quite understand was the cost of a Unoa kit even though the sculpt is amazing.

    10. The Unoa kit is incredibly cheap to buy if you get them direct from Alchemic Labo -- from memory, 39,000yen for the old version, 42,000yen for the 1.5 version including the large breasted part as optional extra. The problem is that because they are so hard to get from the maker, they go for more than double their original price on the secondhand market. That price, however, has nothing to do with the making of them, or the price the maker wanted to set, but everything to do with availability versus desirability.

    11. i agree, i don't prefer volks wigs, they have nice styles, and volks charges about the same as other companies but i find the hairs are not as soft as other companies, like leeke or angel region, and you can usually see the band in the front of the wig, which isn't a problem i typically have with other companies, but all 3 of my volks wigs have this issue, and they are all wigs with bangs.

    12. I guess this would then have to be a wig-by-wig sort of thing, because I disagree. :) The Volks wigs that I own (I have quite a few) are by far and away the best quality wigs I have; the hair is really soft and nice to touch, the wigs are full, and very easy to style, and they last a very long time. And I've never had a problem with them with the wig cap showing. Whereas with the other wigs I own, including quite a few LeeKe ones, the hair is not as good quality (in particular one long one I have is very flyaway) and I had so much trouble with the wig cap showing on one that I bought a new one of it just to deal with the problem. :sweat

But as I said, this is surely a wig-by-wig case -- you probably have totally different Volks wigs and LeeKe wigs to what I have. :)

    13. I feel the exact same way as you, Cassiel, and have had all the same problems with mine. Leeke wigs are soft, but I find the texture to be cheaper feeling than Volks wigs, and the flyaways are just AWFUL. They also tangle in ways the Volks wigs don't, and their fibers get permanently bent from it.

    14. I like the Volks wigs I own because they're... durable ^^; The one Luts wig I have feels softer in an 'oily' way, but not an unpleasent oiliness. However, it also gets frizzy easier and is harder to neaten. Kyu and Roo's 'default' wigs (both Volks) can be smoothed down by hand pretty easily.

    15. I didn't see anyone say they weren't expensive. Could you find the quote, maybe? I know I said that Volks isn't expensive compared to other companies once you add in that they have faceups, wigs, eyes, and clothes, but...

    16. yes, I agree with you. there is no way that these dolls aren't expensive! It takes me a long time to save up, and sometimes I'm baffled by people who consider the price nothing!
but after reading this thread (esp. donn's post) I understand why they cost as much as they do.
and I think that they are worth the price.:)

    17. I always wondered why BJD's were so expenise, I mean, I didnt think the material they're made of was terribly expensive, and they are made in molds, I understand that they're like collectables now, but still, why are they so expensive?

    18. They're expensive because the gods dont want us on drugs so they created these dolls that cost a fortune and JUST like crack we get hooked and have to keep buying them and buying them...but this time we dont harm our bodies 8D So this is a safe drug...yup..and like all drugs they are expensive...

      >_> okie so I realyl have NO idea why they expensive..

    19. You're brilliant, you know that?! XD :aheartbea
