Why are so many boy dolls so girly?

Aug 10, 2007

    1. Well, as a girl my opinion is that it's because the companies think mainly girls will buy the dolls and they know we love pretty boys! Maybe the popularity of yaoi and manga/anime with girly-boy protagonists is partly the reason why? BJDs are very anime looking...
Oh I just remembered (maybe I dreamed this so don't take my word for it), aren't the original Volks BJDs meant to be kids? Like SD 10 means a 10 year old? and SD 13 means a 13 year old? Maybe that's also why, cos young boys do actually have girly faces. :?

    2. if i wanted a boy doll i'd dress him like a boy.. and as for my 2 female dolls... their very much female and being a man i dont really understand the whole guy looking like a girl thing and being straight.. the first thing that really comes to mind is that guy's dressing like girls = gay or in "transition" but the whole guy on guy thing.. women think its sexy or hot.. and for guys girl on girl stuff is hot...well most guys... so the more i think about it and put it into perspective its more of a gender mentality. girls collect boy dolls and boys *what few we are* collect girl dolls... as for me i dont plan on owning a boy doll

    3. everyone probably said it already, i think this may have to do with yaoi's popularity and the fact that most of the time the protagonists are girly boys (wich could also explain the huge quantity of cross-dressers)

it may also be beacuse androgynus people are considered attractive and doll companies don't want to risk to have a doll that doesn't get sold by going for something that most people would like.

    4. im actually having issues finding a girl doll i like and recently it was brought to my attention that its because my boys are all so pretty :|
i had a B&G Aurora head for a few months that i loved, and when i finally got her on a body, with her girly faceup, eyelashes, long hair and BOOBS she still looked like a boy to me. i love the mold but she's up for sale now as i think i need to replace her with an even girlier sculpt.

    5. I think, ( quote me, sue me) its a thing with japanese, korean and general asian culture.
Men are much more lithe, feminine in physique an slender. whereas western culture depicts men as, well.. WWE competitors.
just look at the cultural diversities between east and west. Manga and Comics.
The target audience are women who enjoy their men 'pretty' or as Bishounens, that kinda leaves out the others. lulz. (me included haha)
that being said. its a little strange for someone to want a beefed up DOLL, wouldn'tchasay? xD
      im such a hypocrite sometimes.

    6. Not particularly strange. ;)

    7. Not at all strange. I think the popularity of the big Iplehouse boys like Akando, Evan, Luo and Kamau prove that there is indeed, a market for beefier, handsome males.

    8. im so used to feminin boys (j-rockers for exemple) that to me, dolls like chiwoo looks pretty manly xD

& i think that the boys looks pretty girly cuz the BJD are said to be in between realistic and anime. and anime boy usually have the same face as girls (so it makes them feminin)
there is probably also the yaoi thing... and the fact that so many girls seem to enjoy girly boy

    9. Pretty boys are okay - and gorgeous, but manly dolls are totally the thing that makes me click a link.

    10. In Japan and Korea, feminine boys are very popular, just like pretty, innocent looking girls. ^_^ It's all about consumer demand, and culture in one. Also, many Asian boys DO LOOK quite feminine. I think that has more to do with it than anything.

    11. Wow he's gorgeous! *_* I like these kind of men. Well this particular facial structure does it for me.

    12. I think it's just the style, really. I have seen some pretty manly dolls, though, but that's coming from someone who's into the anime/manga/japanese styles, so to me it looks manly for the style but to others it would still look 'girly'. Honestly, I don't think it really matters as long as people like it.

    13. I find this to be a sort of funny thread... I mean, what if the question asked is regarding human boys... what would be the answers then?

    14. What's your point? Humans are humans, dolls are dolls. You seem to imply that the circumstances are similar or identical when they're really not.

    15. Agreed. How someone is born is very different than how they are deliberately crafted, styled, created, or recreated.

Even in cases where a human being designs themselves a look that is what is conceived of as feminine, unless someone else is doing it for them (and they have no choice in the matter), it's something they're choosing and crafting for themselves, not having done for them by someone else.

    16. It's a bit off-topic but I think what meloncakedoll finds funny is that we can talk about this about dolls because they are different to people and imagine if all these answers were to apply to humans we probably wouldn't say them at all.

As to why so many boy dolls so girly, I think it's because some sculpts are simple in style (like anime) or are really young looking which can make them look pretty and so people think they are girls.
I also think face-ups on some male dolls are quite heavy and many have dark eyeshadow which looks good on the male doll, but unless the sculpt is realistic and have manly chiseled features, to some people the face-up may look like they are wearing make-up.

    17. I have to be honest. I'm a sucker for pretty boys that border on androgynous - in the doll world and in real life. I can't explain why so many male sculpts have feminine qualities, but I for one am so glad they do! I am also happy there are "manly" sculpts for those who want their BJD men to have stronger features.

I do believe that with the right face-up, clothes, modding, etc. a male doll with feminine features can be made to appear more masculine. Everyone has an individual preference and interpretation of "masculine", though. What I view as "masculine" may be perceived as "not quite" to some/most,

    18. When I first started the hobby i thought there were only girls. I think after a while even if they are girly you start to be able to tell the diffrence. with my boys i tend to have more sharper head sculpts then the ones i have for my girls i noticed. didn't think about it tell i saw this thread.

    19. This. Masculine and feminine are constructed and cultural ideas, so it's going to vary depending on who's looking at the doll. I personally don't think square jaw and bulky muscles = masculine, and anything smoother in profile = feminine.

Shoujo anime and manga certainly did affect how the first ABJDs looked, IMO, and characters from those are fangirl fantasies, often different from what they see every day (although increasingly less so in Japan, as many young guys take pretty serious care of their appearance there these days). It's a shock to many of my countrywomen to go there, used to guys who work hard to make it look like they're not trying at all to look good, and see men with obvious personal grooming and interest in fashion. :sweat But I digress.

I will have room in my collection for some chunky Iplehouse boys, but for the most part I much prefer the pretty boys. In real life, I'm not into beefy muscles at all. Give me a lean, slinky dancer or rocker any day :sweat. I'm glad people have options for their resin men, but I was attracted to the hobby exactly because of all the pretty boys ^_-.

    20. It bothers me sometimes, when I went to a con and 90% of all dolls are wearing girls clothing (I get mad, when these doll owners claim, that they are SOO SPECIALL!!!! O.o.")
Boys love, crossderssing, etc.. are very popular themes. Im ok with it- My only Bishi-boy is gay too. But his character designs is mor than just his sexuality.
Some people should be more careful with themes like called above.

I like older looking molds more. (Because most of my characters are older)
