Why are so many boy dolls so girly?

Aug 10, 2007

    1. i like girly boys. they're pretty. like gackt. or...lee jun ki. :D i just like em because...i dunno. everyone used to put so much focus on being all buff and everything and i think mr universe type muscles are gross. so i like girly boys so i will never have to see said muscles again *.*

    2. Well I like boys who look like boys very much. The Elfdoll lads look like boys. Limhwa has 2 male dolls that are very cute but not girly. Lati boys are nicely masculine. Unidoll has been mentioned as well. So has Iplehouse.

None of these guys looks like an over muscled Todd McFarlane model either.

    3. Its harder for me to find boys I would concider owning than girls. I don't like the overly feminized ones... at least as boys. They make me want to turn them into pretty girls! (Like Elf Chiwoo).
On the flip side, I also don't like overly manly dolls like Hound and Ark.

So I guess I like pretty boys with a jawline.. like CP Moon. I will have him someday!

    4. I love the manly-looking guys of Unidoll. One day I'm gonna get an Ark...

Nothing wrong with the girlie boys, but I find there's way too much of them and not enough resin testosterone! :D

    5. I like the pretty-ish boys, but not TOO pretty. There's a big difference to me between pretty boy and girly boy. I tend to agree that too many of the male dolls are girly rather than pretty. I mean, in real life, I don't know if I could go for a dude who was more of a chick than me, hahaha. Id feel sort of bizarre. I don't want gigantic, muscled, hairy dude tho either. A nice between rather. I wish more of the dolls had a nice between area. You either get super gaunt or angular, or a boy who looks like a 12 yr old girl. :(

    6. The Unidolls are really quite nice.

I think my DM Haneol Moon. my IH Soo Ri and my OD Tae are pretty masculine as well as more realistic than many male head sculpts.

    7. I am following up my previous comment by saying I would like to see more masculine dolls..only to make the market more diverse...I really like my Arks body, the big muscled chest cavity and more muscular arms and legs, I don't like muscle men per se, but its nice to be able to buy a doll like that if more were made.
But I love my hound just as much..and to me he looks like alot of musicians I have known..tall, lanky but with enough muscle tone to be really HAWT!
and I just got in a MSD AOD boy body and wow I was impressed with the muscle tone on this body..for a MSD its really nice to have that.

Its nice to have diversity in the market..

    8. I love Girly boys too xD!

But every guy doll I've shown my mum and friends I have had to correct them on their gender XD
Actually one girl doll I showed my mum she asked if it was a man o.O

I myself can easily distinguish boy from girl molds for some reason, probably because Im used to this feme boy stuff :) but it just goes way over other peoples heads.

Besides I like the cutesy look ^^.

    9. I've seen more than one post saying that men with muscles are "gross". Methinks there are a number of girls in the closet here?

And now, since I have pretty strong feelings about "femboys", I'm quietly walking away from this thread so as to not offend the legions of skirtboy fangirls.

    10. I was thinking about making a post like this myself, actually. I'm very disappointed by the lack of masculine dolls. I'm another one in the minority of not liking the androgynous, feminine guy dolls. I quite like Unidoll Ark, but I don't need to have him. Then again I don't think I've ever seen a guy doll I need to have.

I don't think anyone here wants a bodybuilding, hairy chested, beer guzzling guy doll. I think we just want one with a bit more of an angular face, less girly lips, and a body that doesn't show ribs poking out.

    11. Many dolls would look more like men if they had a Adam's apple and less smooth hands.
That's what male cross-dressers who wish to pass must disguise and may have quite a lot of trouble with, right?

    12. I personnally adore girly boys, I think they're really attractive. My boys are almost always mistaken for girls, even when they wear no shirt...

    13. I found this very amusing, its just great!
I'm into guy-ish dolls rather than femboys myself:)

    14. Interesting... I found it mildly offensive, but to each their own I guess.

If SK wants to believe that not favoring dolls sculpted like body-builders is an indication of lesbianism, that's fine... But it's bunk.

Personally, I don't care the least bit for "muscle-men". I prefer the look of more gender-neutral features and more lithe bodies. I find "girly-boys" more attractive... BOYS being the operative word, here. Girls just don't appeal to me as strongly, either in resin or real life.

So, it's not about closeted sexual preferences. It's just about what I find more pleasing from aesthetic point of view. Big muscles, square jaws and a lot of hair aren't appealing to me, so why would I want to keep a collection of male dolls around who looked like that?

    15. I found out that many foreigners who visit Far East Asia find our boys/men very feminine. Physical appearance, dress style, mannerisms. (I don't think a lot of guys here have pronounced Adam's apples, for example.)
Unlike Americans/Canadians/Europeans of Asian heritage who pick up a lot of the "macho" vibe (emphasis on sports ability, etc.) that is prevalent in that society, there are a lot of mannerisms the guys here have that Westerners would deem "girly". The dolls just happen to reflect that.

    16. QFE, Brightfires. I agree wholeheartedly.

I think if what Stoner Kitty suggests is true, a lot of partners of DoA-ers would be very surprised, and 80% of DoA would be in the closet. ¬_¬

    17. I think it's part of the asian aesthetic. If you look at their idols and pop stars, they aren't really that masculine either...

    18. Maybe it just doesn't stick as well without some Mr. Super Clear!

Danny and John have chest hair and they love to pitch the Guinness at the pub. They ain't no a bodybuilders though, even if one's on the Unidoll Real and the other on an IH Muscle Type. They get their work out narrowly escaping death XD

Asia isn't all about feminine men by the way... Gackt and other visual kei stars are a minority. Sugizo and Takeshi Kaneshiro types are more prevalent, and let's not forget this handsome looker. The same applies to Hong Kong cinema, Korea, Thailand, even Bollywood. Perhaps these guys aren't "butch" like Hugh Jackman or Bruce Willis, but they aren't "girly boys" either. Besides, western culture has its own fair share of not!butch aesthetic, ex. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, David Bowie's legacy...

I don't have an issue with the girly boy aesthetic on DoA, but if I'm to have a "girly boy" doll, I'd rather he be more akin to a womanly man <3

    19. Really interesting point, Angmasuzy! We make far too many assumptions coming out of our own particular cultural P.O.V.; I'm glad you gave us some indication of the milieu in which these dolls were actually created. After all, they were originally intended for Korean and Japanese markets, not for Westerners. They rightfully should reflect Korean and Japanese aesthetics. To what degree do the male dolls appear idealized to Asian eyes? Are there some that look very much like the teen/pre-teen boys they are meant to portray, or are they still an unrealistic archetype reminiscent of shoujo anime?

EDIT: I was posting at the same time as ACXchan. You also have a good point, and talking in generalizations is always a good way to get into trouble. Perhaps part of the "femininity" of the male dolls is their youth? Look at the ages: SD13, SD16, 16 or 17 for Delfs. In many cultures, 15-17 is/was considered the height of male beauty--apparently to a Roman or medieval Persian, everything was downhill from there.

EDIT TAKE 2: I am a lesbian, but since I have no interest in being the spokeswoman for my people, I'm not touching the "in the closet" comment with a pitchfork.

    20. As an Asian who has lived in Asia for several years, I think the majority of dolls offered on the market are still unrealistic archetypes reminiscent of shoujo anime ^ ^;; IMO the company that has come closest to reflecting the ideal aesthetic for a young pop culture star by Asian standards is Elfdoll.

      Edit for Simultaneous Edit XD:
I think youth aesthetic is very true in Volks' case since they label them by age. On the other hand I think the image is definitely shifting towards an "18+" trend too. Companies show their sculpts smoking and doing things one wouldn't expect of a child, or things that would be 'unacceptable' for teenagers.

For the Greco-Roman model of paederasty, it was downhill after age 17ish because having sexual relations with a man your own age was considered vile. Greek men were expected to "outgrow" their paederast phase after age 18 or so and become the top to a new bottom. Citizens used Alexander and Hephaistion's co-eval (same age) relationship to criticize them. This looks like an OT tangent but really I think it has some bearing on the dollie topic! Since most of our western culture is built on a Greco-Roman foundation, is it possible some people don't like "girly boys" because they find it a phase in which only teenagers should partake, and that adults should have "outgrown" this aesthetic?
