Why are so many boy dolls so girly?

Aug 10, 2007

    1. I have two sets of Buckbeds for my boys. There American Girl bunkbeds, I bought them off ebay a while back. There great beds, Here's a couple pics ^^
No dolls in the pics, they were all else were lol.

      Bunk 1

      Bunk 2

    2. How cute! Are those for SD or MSD?

    3. Woah, Crescent, those were actually EXACTLY what I was looking for:o
I've seen them used in photoshoots and the like, and now I'm seeing them again.
And the american girl dolls are 18 inches, so the beds are for MSD, right?
      Too cute! *wants*
      [.EDIT.]
Just found a set on eBay, and placed a bid! *crosses fingers*

    4. yep there for Msd ^^ there great bunks for them.

      goodluck bidding =3

    5. Good luck those are super cute!

    6. Ooh, I like those. They're kind of retro-utilitarian, which is exactly what I would like to have (I'd probably paint them black...)! I hope I can find some when I have the cash to buy them.

    7. I don't mean to offend at all here, I am just opening this idea up for debate.

Why are there so many girly boy dolls. Boy dolls with faceups and clothes to look like girls. I don't understand it. If you want a girly doll why not just get a girl.

So what is the appeal of a girly boy in a pink wig? Why are there so many of them?

    8. Pink was not always a 'girl' color. In historical times, pink was considered a powerful, masculine color, because it was related to red.
Even as recently as the 80s, men wore pink. (Hot pink, but then, that was the 80s.)

As for 'girly' boys, well, I tend to prefer more 'girl' clothes because boy clothes are just plain boring. There are really only so many ways you can arrange black leather, and I'm not into the grunge or punk thing. Street fashion for boys these days is horrible, so girl fashion it is. Or Chinese. Nice of Asia to make so many outfits more or less unisex.

    9. I've been wondering that too. Perhaps some people are offended by the female form which is considered to be "ideal." Then you have a lot of people who wish me were a little softer.

And you do have a lot of female who own male dolls who don't really know what it's like to be a man they can only go by what they see. And since they are seeing it through female eye that feminity can show up in their male dolls.

You also have a lof of female that are into Yaoi as well so that might have a big role is female acting males too.

    10. It's because in this day and age, being "manly" is simply not baring any characteristic that is associated with females. In a book I recently read, author Jessica Valenti talks about society and gender roles, stating, "The message is clear: in order to be a man, one must avoid being feminine at all costs. In fact, the best way to be a man is to simply not be a woman."

I don't have a problem with breaking traditional gender roles but there comes a point where things get a bit silly. If you are going to dress your boy in a long, pink wig, a skirt, high-heels, and extreme makeup, I hope your doll's character is either a crazy Jrocker or a transgendered. If not, sand off the doll's peen, and continue.

I found myself oohing and awing over cute dresses, but I was not about to stick L-bi in them. So I sold one of my boys and I bought a girl. I get to play dress up with the dolls and Aiden keeps his dignity.

    11. I Sooo want an Iplehouse Strongman and dress him in a Superman costume!

    12. I think it's mostly because they look so strange when they're so small and manly. It's like action figures when I look at those who seem more manly.
Also it's better for the heads to be interchangable with girls. Girls look more manly then, boys very cute.
I think it's better that way.

      Laoky

    13. I like girly men because they look younger, i wouldn't go dressing up my guys in dresses and skirts. It's all down to personal taste. I kinda wish there was more of a market for the gorgeous manly men, thankfully Iplehouse has been realising some stunning ones (i'm having such a hard time choosing one!) so not all males are girly in mold.

I think it's nice to break the mold sometimes! But it does get a bit repeatitive =/

    14. I was guessing it's because they're owned by girls?

    15. There's a saying in chinese, that a male with slight effeminine facial features is more handsome. To me I like androgonous dolls because they're not meant to be 'real' I see alot of men in real life everyday I just want to see something pretty when I go home. Although I had always said 'if I want a doll to dress up I will buy a girl' and now have ended up with a boy doll that is pink and wearing a dress. He wears boys clothes most of the time and can look like a boy. He was meant to be effeminine without skirts... that broke down after 2 years, I just wanted to buy a dress *shrug*

Also to me it's just something different to look at. I haven't found a girl that screams 'buy me!' just yet so I'll settle for the girly boy I have for now. All my other boys are dressed boyish so it gets boring when you look at 9 boys and all are wearing suits/street/casual smart with one more rockish, it's nice to have something different even if it's not the ideal solution.

    16. I've been interested in BJDs for about a year now(I don't have any though) and recently got my mom interested. After taking her and my grandmother with me to a small doll meet this last weekend, my mom decided that she wants some BJDs too(my grandmother was interested too, but I don't know if she wants any though). But we had gotten home that night after the doll meet, and my mom and I were determined to find her a female doll she liked. But half the doll faces we saw, we were like "Oh, that doll is so pretty! Wait, its probably male thought...." And sure enough, most of them were. But after she went to bed, I found a doll I though she might like and showed it to her the next day. As soon as she saw the doll she said, "That's HER! That's the doll I want!"

Anyways, that's my experience with seeing most male BJDs..... Too many look like girls. I even think there's a stamp on DeviantArt that someone made that says, "If think a doll looks really pretty, assume it's male." I laughed so hard when I saw that because unfortantely, it mostly true.

    17. ...if it counts, I'm getting a girl body to mod into a genderless body like the tinies have, even though the character is refered to as "male". personaly I don't mind all the girly boys...it's kind if..refreshing in a way (even though in some parts of the US if a guy wears a skirt in public they can be fined:|) It's all about expression and tastes. Honestly if you think about...a straight guy would have to have some serious balls to dress like a girl in public. Hell my ex still gets some hell for having long hair! I don't see what's wrong about it honestly. If you like girly boys so be it but if you don't just live and let live.

    18. well... I know that *I* personally LOVE girly boys. And I know that a lot of the rising generation is getting really attracted to pretty boys. Because well.... they're just.... pretty. And people like pretty things? ^^; So I guess it's only natural that the companies would cash into that.

    19. I wouldn't say "girly boys" are refreshing/original, not in this hobby. Rather, ones that look male seem to be the rarity.

Anyways, I got two that I try to dress like boys, though Mike still gets the girl treatment because of his long hair (I don't mind. I understand that its hard to tell). He also gets dressed in the latest fashion, which has been coming up quite metrosexual recently.

Personally... Girly boys irritate me. I know its other people's dolls and whatever, but I can't help but cringe when I come across an exorbitant display of girlyness on a boy doll. No, I don't have anything against people's lifestyles and personalities, but its the same irritation that keeps me away from 70% of yaoi and all of the less hardcore stuff - because at least one of them is, by all means, not male. If I wanted to look at girls, I'd look at girls. As such, I want to look at boys. Males. As a fictional character, their personality is really all that exist of them.

    20. Case in point......this is a picture of one of my favorite BJD's that I own.....he's an SD/16 Volks Yukinojo, complete with facial hair and my father said he looks like a girl! GAH! An he was dressed in black pants and a turtleneck at the time!

      I don't think he's girly, do you?
