Why larger dolls?

Nov 17, 2012

    1. Is it quality over quantity?
      No?

Do you have no intention to buy more dolls?
I declared my collection finished, so nope. No more dolls for me =) (not BJDs anyway).

Are they a replacement for children that you can't have or can't stand or maybe you're not ready for children yet?
With the exception of a few Dollmore dolls, SD dolls and taller do NOT resemble children at all. So I don't understand where this question comes from. Maybe this would be more fitting for reborns or something.

Does their size make it easier for you to dress them and give them face-ups and put their pieces back together when you unstring your large doll?
They are indeed easier to re-string and face-up. Dressing up? Er... Not so sure. My iple men are like dead babies (weight and all).

Do they maybe make better companions than a YoSD or MSD?
Not really. I have dolls in many sizes and they all have nice qualities to them.

Maybe it's the only size you can find the age that you want your character to be?
Bingo! That's the only reason behind me owning all these big dolls. If I could shrink them all to MSD size I'd do it in a blink, but alas, there are really few REAL mature minies out there to choose from (Lumedoll, Souldoll Vito, etc).

    2. For me 60 cm is large enough to go "wow, they are big" but small enough to be impressed by everything being small but well made. I admire the handicraft put into the clothes and with smaller size you are often forced to make simplifications. It is easier for the clothes to be in scale, not looking oversized or having stiches that would be gigantic if upscaled. I also have a special fascination for doll shoes and at 1/3 you can make them fairly realistic. :)

    3. Part of the reason I gravitate towards the larger dolls is because they're more mature looking and fit the characters I have in mind. It would be really difficult for me to pull off some of my characters in a smaller size because the maturity of boy and face wouldn't be there. At the same time I guess I still have some of the whole mindset that it would be ridiculous to spend hundreds of dollars on a smaller sized doll, once you calculate the actual cost of materials to the profit margins. Ironically enough I still ended up buying some tinies.

    4. I'm not completely sure why I like larger dolls. It's just always been a preference of mine, having a big room or a big dog. They're going along with the trend I guess haha. Although I do like that they're pretty noticeable when they are bigger. Even though I told myself I would only have SD size I still just went out and bought a couple of 45 cm ones, so I'll have to see how they compare

    5. In my opinion, they feel more realistic to me as an SD. I do want to own an MSD though. The whole sculpt itself is what matters to me the most, though.

    6. Whenever anyone mentions BJD's, I automatically associate the size to the dolls. I guess what really intrigued me about these dolls is the "SIZE". I never owned a doll that big. To me, the size was "AN ATTENTION GRABBER" that got me into the hobby in the first place. I've been in this hobby since 2007 and only collect MSD and SD.

      SIZE IS EVERYTHING...to me.

    7. Um, I believe that I started this thread and I do not remember asking about replacement children. And people who 'replace' children often don't realize that they are 'replacing' children.

      Please explain further your view.

ED: Okay, I am so sorry. I've been through a lot these past couple months. I can't believe I said that.

    8. When I was choosing a doll, I instantly knew it had to be one of the larger ones because I don't like the smaller ones' faces. Esthetically and overall, I never liked dolls of children or baby-looking dolls. It's funny because I love children and have no problem with real babies. I guess I just consider my doll to be a friend or companion rather than somebody I would treat like a baby, haha.

    9. For me it's all a matter of height and age scale. All of my MSDs are around 11 or 12, my Yos are children. My SDs from late teens and upwards in age. I have more SDs because I like the sculpts that come out. in addition to the fact that I have a lot of adult male characters who need shelling.

    10. I like big dolls AND big houses! :fangirl:
Right now I live in a small apartment, but it's starting to give me a little claustrophobia lol. I also like to collect furniture, so you can imagine...
SD dolls are easy to paint, sew for, and find better nicer and more variety of wigs. I like to sit them in chairs and let them be a presence all their own! Plus you can see them from farther away. So therefore, repairmen can come over and be creeped out by that strange doll emanating its own presence from its own seats in my house lol! I have a fancy no-one-allowed-to-sit-on sofa and I plan to put a bunch of dolls on it lol. Someday I shall live in a big spacious house with a cool decor design with dolls integrated.

    11. for me despite the fact that miniature stuff fasinates me I am a disaster with teeny fiddly stuff. I can be a clumsy ox handed klutz. and like others have said the details are more evident. For me thats important as my vision deteriorates. I worked with costumes for over 10 years ... live humans are what I got to play dress up on.... lol so in a way this is 'downsizing for me lol. I just saw the box opening thread for a 101cm girl and am in love love love, both with the size and the doll ^^.

    12. I always fell for the larger sculpts and enjoyed larger dolls versus smaller dolls. I had a MSD a long time ago and I did like her, but she was way too young looking compared to what I wanted. Even when I was younger I always favored the larger dolls over the smaller so maybe it's just me =X

    13. Well, I own two MSDs already so it's not necessarily that I only like bigger dolls. My MSDs I chose based on sculpt - they were both the most interesting sculpt to me at the time, and also I suppose there's the factor of being able to buy 2 MSDs for the price of one SD (usually).

However I'm ridiculously excited for my larger (70cm) doll to come. Why?

Well, I suppose a part of it is that I'm 6 feet tall. Growing up I was always the tallest kid, the 'giant'. I always stood a head taller than everybody else and people constantly mistook me for being older than I was, and therefor I was labeled as somehow mentally backwards for a while because I appeared to look about six when I was three. I guess the reason why that is relevant is because I feel like 70cm BJDs are the 'unusually tall' of the BJD world too, and thus I could bond well with a big doll because of this shared fact.

I also love the idea of having something heavy and substancial to carry around. For the money BJDs cost I like the idea of having something really, really visable to show for it, plus with my height MSDs look a lot smaller in comparison than they do to most average height people around here. I feel like my 70cm will be more in proportion to me physically if that makes any sense.

I also like exploring the different sizes of BJD. I have four now - one offtopic little 'un, two MSDs and a 70cm SD on the way. The variety is nice - if I want somebody to put in my purse and take with me, I can. If I want somebody who can sit on a shelf and look pretty I have. And if I want somebody to sit on a chair in the hall and frighten the living daylight out of visitors - well then that's there too.

My mum pointed out that my 70cm will be as tall as a toddler. Now, I never thought about the whole maternal aspect too it - I didn't activley buy him thinking 'I wish I had a baby. I'll buy a giant doll to make up for it'. Because I would have bought a baby/toddler doll if that was the case. Instead I think I like having a companion, and apparently larger dolls are easier to cuddle without fear of squishing. It's not that I don't have companions in real life, because I do. But I've recently had a lot of upsetting things happen in my life and it'll be nice to have a big thing that I can talk at and cry too without worries about wasting anybody's time or being judged (I do this with my MSDs too, but they're a bit small for me to cuddle properly)

Then there's the fact that you can get more mature clothing for SD sizes than the smaller sizes and of course that they're easier to paint and sew for. They also tend to have more mature faces and bodies, so for somebody more interested in adult and doll characters (like me) they're perfect. Also, as far as storage goes, I should imagine there's less worry in terms of them falling down the back of a cupboard or something.

    14. I have always considered myself a friend of larger dolls. Suppose it's mostly about the sculpts.. I do not like dolls that look like children and most of the time smaller dolls fall in to this category. Smaller dolls for me tend to be "too doll like" and I get too many images of barbies etc. in my head. In other words small dolls feel like toys to me. Making anything for a bigger doll is basically easier (sewing etc.) however finding props can get harder. I have considered few smaller dolls (not smaller than MSD) which have been limited fantasy dolls mostly. Haven't fallen yet.. Personally I would love all my dolls to be higher than 60cm :)

    15. I really like to look at cute, childlike and dreamy bjds but I noticed that I just like looking at them not owning them. For my characters dolls a more mature adult look are better and the best ones are happen to be always 60cm+
It's kind of funny because I didn't really like my dolls being that big. Maybe because I'm more of a pullip lover and they like 30cm max. It was really strange holding a doll twice as tall but I just love how the look and woah sewing for a 60cm+ doll is a LOOOT easier than for 30cm. I suddenly could make all the stuff I wasn't to make before! That's kinda got me hooked and now I loving tall dolls very much because making stuff for them and take photos of them is so much easier and so much fun! XD

    16. I currently have a yosd girl, and an msd boy, and am waiting for an msd girl and an sd girl.

I've noticed though, that my yosd girl is spoilt. She has so many props (three shelves on my bookshelf have become rooms for her) and I love setting her up with all her little toys and such.

However my msd boy is much easier to sew for and I love posing him and photographing him.

I think, once I get my sd girl, I'm going to absolutely adore her. Creatively, I'm more inspired by girls. Clothing design for girls is much more varied and I really enjoy sewing for them. So I think my sd girl might become my favourite in the future.

    17. I have more SDs than any other size, and despite my desire to buy more MSDs/tinies, I always seem to be getting more large dolls. The reason: there are more sculpts that I like in the SD size range. If I could somehow shrink them all while maintaining the level of detail, I would.

    18. I like big dolls for a variety of aesthetic reasons -- I don't think it has anything to do with quality vs. quantity or liking giant houses or anything like that. I live in a tiny house and have a small army of giant dolls, heh. :)

    19. I like smaller dolls but I think some dolls are meant to be larger (character to protrat etc)

    20. I love the bigger dolls. I only collect boys and most of my characters are not children so the more mature sculpts are important. I also just love the look of my large boys sitting around the house. I am getting 2 MSDs but all my others are SDs over 60cm. I find the 60cm boys perfect to carry to meetups etc and there is also so much variety of clothing. The bigger boys 70+ are heavy and do require a bit of space to display but I love that they are big enough to show lots of detail both on their bodies and faceups. I also find tiny dolls just don't interest me at all so it's no point getting one.
