Why larger dolls?

Nov 17, 2012

    1. Of my collection of 31 dolls, all are SD or bigger, except for 4 MSDs, a YoSD and a pet doll. My reasoning is that I can't find the look I want in smaller dolls. With the exception of 2, all of my dolls are adult characters, and it's just too hard to find MSD and smaller with the right look. I used to own all MSD, but upgraded. I also like the feel and size of SD better. I think part for me as well is that I used to collect Barbies and American Girl dolls, so bigger makes it feel more "worth the money" to me. (That's not to say smaller bjds are cheap or not worth it, as they're obviously very different from Barbie or AG, but there's just something about SD that feels more "special" to me.)

    2. The size of my living or storage space does not influence the scale of my hobbies. I echo another's sentiment that if I want something, I find a way to make it fit. My husband and I live in less than 400 square feet, and he has musical equipment much larger than my dolls.

My dolls are not children or stand-ins for children. For me they are personal property, like books or clothing.

I like SD-scale dolls because I prefer the level of sculpting detail; the availability and selection of eyes, clothes, and wigs; and the way they look on display and in pictures.

    3. I just prefer handling 60cm dolls. Not sure why. It's like why I don't like certain colours. I can't explain why, I just do xD
but also the clothing and accessories for that size genrally look better. Just look how clothes fall on Barbie! She looks twice as big with them on and they are more stiff. But if you take the exact same materials for human clothes, it won't look like that. There won't be a "weight gain" look, the fabric will flow and move more naturally.

And I think whether your dolls will take a lot of space or not has to do with how many you have. Soon I will have 4 SD dolls, but I've seen people with a dozen of MSD dolls. In that situation, I think my dolls take less space!
I don't like owning too many things.

    4. I got my dolls for different reasons...my first was a 70cm. I liked that he was a full set doll, and he could pose really well. I got my 68cm doll because I loved his head sculpt...or rather came to love it...a Unidoll Ark is not everyone's idea of a good-looking doll. ;) I love cute, too, however, and my Yo-SD ended up coming home with me instead of the MSD that I had originally intended to get because the Yo-SD was just so cute! I'd still appreciate even more diversity in my collection, although if I don't acquire any more BJD's, that's fine, too.

    5. I like my larger dolls because they're so substantial. They're something different from my 1/6 scale fashion dolls.

I also like the maturely sculpted bodies in larger size than I do with mature tinies. If they're going to be mature, I like them to have the size for the part.

I like my MSD sized doll as a little girl, though :)

    6. I love smaller dolls better because they are easier to carry and look better in my eyes. I like SDs but I'm not crazy over them, I've had a lot of SDs and they all have gone to new homes except for one (my first SD) and that's just because he's special and I can't let go of my older dolls, they are like more important to me than the new dolls^^

My favorite size is MSD *hands down* I like the teenager looking doll so I don't mind if they are not "mature". I also love tinies just because they are adorable but they are a lit bit hard to dress, however, I prefer Yo-SDs over SDs. SDs for me are like only legs XD I blame this on my Isul dolls (big heads, smaller bodies) which are actually my favorite dolls ever. I also love the 21-22cm obitsu dolls and if I could have all my dolls this size I would.

I love looking at big dolls though :)

    7. I own two 60cm dolls, a boy and a girl. I definitely have a preference for SDs, despite the fact that my friends with dolls have 50cm or smaller.

My SDs are great for cuddling, easy to handle (in terms of eyes, wigs, clothes, shoes, and posing), and they represent two young-adult characters (smaller dolls do tend to look less mature). As I've read a lot in this thread, there's just that feeling that allows me to judge that I like SDs the best. I was originally going to start with 30cm or smaller, but I'm so glad I saw my boy's sculpt, because SDs are just "for me".

I appreciate my friends' MSDs, but I always feel like I'll break them. I also love to look at the smaller dolls, but I know I'd get frustrated trying to replace their eyes, or just trying to pose them.

    8. -Rant begins here, feel free to skip it.- My dolls are not my children and were never intended to be. I don't like children. The youngest character among my dolls is in his late teens, or at least he was when he became a vampire and now he's super old. I shouldn't have been, but I was actually offended when my co-worker told another co-worker that one of my dolls was my kid. I guess she got that idea because I show off pictures of him like other people do of their own kids or pets, but considering my relationship with the character in rp, it would actually be quite disturbing if he was. 0_o;; I don't consider them my children or surrogate children, they're TOYS. Fancy, pretty, customizable TOYS. I play with them. They are my unemployed roommates and I have no maternal leanings towards them. -End of rant.-

I picked a large doll because I "fell in love with" that doll, not because he's big. I want to get big dolls in the future because they're much more huggable than small ones to me. I do like small ones, too, though. Lumpi is 27cm and he's my boyfriend, he sent me a rose on Valentine's day with help from my sister, Jobee.

    9. the clothes for large dolls can have more details, but larger doll is so heavy, that's a problem.LOL

    10. well the size i like most is MSD and until recently i only owned MSDs but i have recently aquired my first SD doll and three floating SD heads, i would really rather have smaller MSDs but am finding it harder and harder to find the more adult characters i want in MSD form and so finally gave up the ghost and got some bigger boys, although if i could find mature MSD sculpts to suit the same characters i would definately switch them down to MSD size!

    11. Personally , I agree that larger dolls tend to look more mature and their sculpts lend themselves to far greater detail than smaller ones. They're easier to dres and create thinf for as well.

    12. To me, BJDs are expensive and the larger the doll, on average (not including your limiteds) it seems you do get more "resin per square inch" for each dollar.
I've always been more attracted to the SD size in BJDs, though I do own some non-BJD baby dolls. Then suddenly an even bigger size came out!
I love the 70cm+ size because of the mature faces and the defined, proportionate, masculine body sculpts available. And as others have said- there's more room for detail, in the actual sculpt and the accessories.
I love the WOW factor, like... your doll is huge and impressive on size alone, before even considering the fantastic customizations you've done to him/her.

    13. Like many others have said, I like the additional detail, the physical size, "solidness", the maturity of the sculpts and greater selection there of, the fashion etc. I am an adult, "corporate America type" collector and one of the aspects I like about the SD size is that I can relate to them as "adult looking" sculpts. Larger size dolls look like people I work with or see in a bar, public transpo, the gym etc... So if I put them in suits or hoodies or give them wine glasses etc., it's all stuff I also do. I don't have children, they are adorable, but I definitely didn't start this hobby or choose the larger size as replacement children or boyfriends/friends for that matter. If I wanted a replacement child then I'd probably be a foster parent or mentor for a children's enrichment group. As for space; I have a fair amount but that didn't play a factor in choosing larger dolls either. In fact I'm considering downsizing to a studio and I'd sell my TV before one of my SD boys.

    14. Well, I have ton's of MSDs, I mean aside from one doll they make my entire collection. I love them, they are my sweets and I have struggled to get all of them, but I'm really itching for an SD! I suppose it's because they seem so cuddly compared to an MSD, they size makes them easier to hold and hug, and I love the thought of a doll taking up a good part of my lap when I sit with them :)

    15. Size is not an issue for me...I love them all!

    16. I have a lot more SD dolls because I like the more mature adult doll and I also like the clothes/outfits that are made for these sized dolls. I do have a few (7) msd sized dolls and I like them too. I don't have any yosd sized dolls because I found them harder to dress and I just didnt want to invest the time and money on them. I have around 25-27 SD sized BJD's and keeping them dressed costs a lot. They also take up a lot of space. Just their original boxes alone take up a lot of garage and storage space, but I love them all.

    17. See, I don't really dig "cute" (well - most of the time, I don't ) and most "un-cute" dolls I've seen, so far, come in SD- or 70cm-size-range. I also prefer more adult-looking dolls, which is kinda hard to find in MSD-, YO-SD- or Tiny-size (well, when you're not into Soom and their monthly MiniGem-sized fairy dolls). Plus, my first doll was a Unidoll Ark and that kinda set a trend, I think (size-wise). I just find SD-sized dolls easier to handle. Not necessarily easier to re-string but easier to hot-glue-suede and dress and stuff like that.

    18. So I was just wondering, why, with this diminishing size trend, why big dolls?

Basically-- the sculpts I like best come in that size. I try to resist the 80cm dolls--they are just too big--but the sculpts are so gorgeous I am tempted (but haven't bought yet). I didn't wish for larger than 60cm dolls, but the sculpts are just so wonderful, I have many of those now.

      Is it quality over quantity?

      NO.

I believe people should buy the doll they wish for and not worry that they can get 2 instead of 1 if they buy smaller or cheaper. If you truly wish for smaller or cheaper, that's fine, but a person should really just want that sculpt (and, of course, make sure that sculpt is right in other ways--if they wish for a character to go with another doll and it's the wrong size, then that wouldn't work, of course).

Anyway, I'm not interested in numbers of dolls, rather just getting dolls I really wish. Size doesn't matter. I have all sizes of dolls.

Do you have no intention to buy more dolls?

Huh? Does this mean that if I buy one large doll that's it--no more dolls? That doesn't make sense! Just save your money and you can buy just about anything... it just takes much longer! But patience is a good thing to have when it comes to dolls...

Anyway, it's obvious that people here buy more than one large doll! *_*

Are they a replacement for children that you can't have or can't stand or maybe you're not ready for children yet?

      NO.

Dolls aren't anything CLOSE to children! Having a dog is closer to having a kid than buying a doll! *_* *_*

Does their size make it easier for you to dress them and give them face-ups and put their pieces back together when you unstring your large doll?

I haven't strung my dolls, but I'm sure Tiny 26cm and larger would be easier than a micro-tiny, but that doesn't answer your questions about Large dolls... So I think the answer is:

      NO.

Some people say sewing for large dolls might be a bit easier, but there are plenty of people sewing for small dolls with no problem.

Do they maybe make better companions than a YoSD or MSD?

      NO.

I don't buy dolls for companionship. (I have people and pets for that!)

Maybe it's the only size you can find the age that you want your character to be?

      NO.

I don't really buy dolls to shell characters.

      -------

I have large dolls because: I liked those sculpts!

      But also--

      * When I started buying bjds in 2004, I liked more mature sculpts and there were no such things, really, but larger dolls came closest.

      * I like the 60cm size. Big enough to have a presence, not too big to be hard to handle or too heavy.

      * More mature styles, more variety in style, more elaborate styles--of clothing, shoes, etc., were available for large dolls. Now, there are some good things available for all sizes, but still, styles I really like are more for larger dolls.

    19. I have more than 35 dolls in a 1-bedroom apartment, most of them 60+cm. I just love the presence that a big doll has. I like its big features, the way its limbs take up space, the way its posture and gestures makes it seem like a real person the more room it displaces. I like its weight, when I hold it, and the way it solidly fills up my arms.

The centerpiece of my living room is an 80cm Soom merman, who is arranged decoratively on the shelf that's supposed to hold a big-screen TV, and he is an excellent conversation-piece; nobody ever enters this living room without saying something about the giant merman. You do not have to squint to get a good look at him.

If I had a fantasy house with its own doll room (or wing ^^), I would have way more EID men than I do now-- here, 3 EIDs is the limit!-- because those guys are just so ridiculously huge & solid that they are majestic. And out of the two EID body-types, I favor the larger Superhero type, all 7 pounds of him, with his double-wide bottom and huge curvy shoulders. They have so much presence, they've almost got their own gravitational field.

Excuse me, but :mwahaha :mwahaha :mwahaha.

    20. My largest doll is a MSD and I actually think that's the perfect size for me. I am jealous that all the awesome clothes are mainly for SD. I have a male YOSD and I hate all the clothes so far for male YOSDs. They all tend to be jeans and hoodies. My YOSD is a dragon so those won't work for what I'm going for.
I would get SD but they're so expensive. I already can't afford some of the MSDs out there. I would like to get at lest one SD though. I think the biggest benefit is the clothing issue.
