Why larger dolls?

Nov 17, 2012

    1. I started with an SD b/c I figured I wanted something bigger than barbie lol. But now I have a 16cm all the way up to a 70cm. My 70cm has recently become my favorite. She's just got a presence. Like if she's sitting on my bed or on my desk, she's hard to miss. And I love the weight of her. Idk if I'd want to carry her around for any length of time but holding her and feeling the weight is nice. And like most people have said already, making stuff for her is easier b/c she's bigger...when I use a sewing machine lol. Half the time I sew it all by hand anyway. But oddly enough I have 4 MSDs versus 1 in each other size. I think it has a lot to do with price. The SD's and 70s look awesome but the MSDs are more in my price range.

    2. I love the large dolls, since they are interesting to me. I do not feel serious restrictions when creating the image. On the turnover, so you can create more detailed and sophisticated image of)) And have a big doll intresnee sculpture, they may be more adult kind, and not just Charming kids. But in spite of all my love for big dolls, they are not a replacement for my family. And especially of babies. Rather, it's more art objects koasivye things to delights the eye))

    3. To me, the small dolls seem like they could be made out of something cheaper and still feel and look the same. The seem like over priced kelly dolls to me. My big dolls have a nice weight to them, especially my Angels doll massive body. I really want a 70 cm doll next. I have six 52-60 cm dolls and I love them all very much! I don't think I could attach to a smaller doll as well.

    4. I too love my MSD sized dolls, but I lost count as to how many times they were mistaken for barbies, despit the fact that they are at least 4"/10cm taller. :|

      I don't have that mixup when I'm carrying around a larger doll.

      I feel similarly. I didn't think I could bond to my smaller dolls, but I did. I love them immensely, but to me, they actually seem like dolls for the most part, vs my larger dolls, which seem more like short people. :lol:

    5. My first doll was an EID because I fell in love with my friend's. I have been sewing and crafting for my friends' dolls for a few years for photoshoots and I have done every size. EID is still my favorite size because when I make outfits for them it is much easier to make details stand out.

    6. Newbie here, If I may chime in,

      The reason I chose the 60-70cm dolls for my first ones are because those are the kinds that I saw most often at conventions, and in cosplay. That was my first experience with BJDs, and I fell in love with the huge beauties from the get-go. I also have a couple of the smaller dolls, and have a heck of a time dealing with the tiny details. I have big hands, and feel having a larger 'canvas' so to speak, would be easier for me to work with. ><;

      Now that I consider it, I may end up having to find a place to properly display my couple of dolls, once I get them.

    7. I prefer bigger dolls (SDs) just because I do, not really sure how to explain it
      and it's weird because I have never had a lot of room and much less room to myself but still for some reason prefer larger dolls (and other things in general) but still like to have a decent amount of unoccupied space (which like you said homes are getting smaller here in the U.S. so it probably makes no logical sense at all)

      I do plan on getting more dolls someday (not any time soon though)
      they are not a replacement for children in any way, shape or form, I have never wanted children and still don't
      their size doesn't make anything easier for me actually, I think finding/making clothes and dressing them isn't too much harder or easier on an SD than a YoSD
      most of the sculpts I like just tend to be SD

    8. This is very much how I see dolls as well. I have a husband, a daughter, a Chihuahua, a window-shelf full of houseplants, and some really amazing friends, and although I truly love dolls, they have their own role in my life and are not a stand-in for any living being of any kind. That being said: I prefer SD-sized dolls for the same reasons it looks like everyone else already named--- the ability to find mature/adult sculpts, the presence they have, and the ability to put more detail and realism into clothing and props.

    9. I chose the 70cm+ doll because of how mature he looks and how I thought it would be easier to make things for him such as accessories and clothes. I think it would be harder to make something detailed if the doll was smaller.

    10. For me it's the age of the character I created along with the fact I love to SD size. To be honest, I just prefer the aesthetic of the larger dolls.

    11. I don't think the size of big dolls being popular has anything to do with your idea that houses are getting smaller.

      I love my 68cm girl because she has presence. She's easier to cuddle. Something about the size of the clothes they wear is very... tangible? I mean I know they're tangible anyway but... I don't know how else to put it.

      And I don't think SDs are really that big. I mean they're tall but they don't take up much space... unless you're building a correctly sized diorama or dollhouse for them. I have lived in some damn cramped spaces, sharing that cramped space with other people and I'd still have room to have a few SDs. To me they're no different than MSDs or smaller. I've had an MSD for a bit over a week now and I'm having a hard time liking the size... she's easier to photograph that's the only advantage I see (other than cheaper clothes) and she just kind of isn't "there" and she seems more delicate and yet she's pretty much taking up the same space as my SD. I also kind of feel like the size of an SD makes them less "doll = toy" and more like a serious thing. Not that I actually think smaller dolls are just silly playthings. There's just something about an SD that I can't put my finger on...

      Replacement for children? hahahaNO. I am childfree. :) I have dolls (and would rather stick to SD size) because I want them. Because they're pretty. And fun to fiddle with (I always have to do something with my hands). And because I love photography and writing and want to combine all of those. And because sometimes I just want something to cuddle.

      TL;DR I have no clue what you're talking about but I'm still new to the hobby. Maybe this problem effects people with lots of dolls?

      *edit* forgot to finish off a thought.

    12. If they made 30cm dolls with the same posibility and detailed sculpts as the 60cm+ size I'd be in heaven. However, I'm personally only planning on having 1-2 dolls because 1) I'm a spoiler, I'd rather have 1 spoiled dolly than 10 naked ones ;) 2) I have kids. I love my kids btw, they're awesome! But I can't wear whatever I want in public when I'm with them, so next best would be to create things in my old style for a big doll and then I can still enjoy it. With two kids to spoil also I don't really have room for a ton of dolls. But one big one is just perfect. 3) Sturdiness! I trust my kids more around a doll so big they can hardly lift her, who can stand alone, then squishing a 3inch mini. Or hiding it in the couch. Though I'd probably laugh honestly... Babies first in my books. But I am certainly allowed to have 1 big nice thing just for myself.

    13. I feel like bigger dolls are... Well, you know, you can buy small dolls at normal stores for children. Bigger dolls just look and feel more impressive, I guess. They're easier to make clothes for, I find, and I guess that the face up would be a bit easier as well. I also love mature bodies more than childlike ones and I want something to cuddle. :)

    14. The first doll I bought was sd, the second a yosd, and now I'm looking at both msd and 70cm+. For me the sd just has a more elegant/adult look then the smaller dolls I've seen and it suits my character to be a bit taller and older looking. I never considered the doll too big or cumbersome in my home and I live in a pretty small place! I mean in large quantities it could be challenging but I would never trade size for quantity.

    15. I really like the weight of larger dolls. There's something just so satisfying about it. Also like others said, more mature faces, more detail, easier to shop for clothes, and they tend to look a bit more realistic.

      I do really like MSD size too, though. They're so dainty and adorable.

    16. Like many others have said:
      - the presence the larger dolls has;
      - I like their weight in my arms;
      - they are better fitting for the characters I want them to be;
      - the sculpts I like best come in that size...

      ...And my 70+cm are sooo great for cuddling! :kitty1

    17. I like sewing for my big dolls because I can't do tiny clothes on my machine. It just eats them. Everything I make can be so detailed at this scale though. It's very nice.

      I prefer to take my 45s out though. They're easier to carry than an 80cm, even at my height.

    18. For me it's just about the sculpts. I'm more attracted to 60-70cm dolls cause they are designed to look more mature.

    19. I'm from Scotland and my place was fairly large there (tho houses/flats tend to be small in the UK, even large ones haven't enough storage spare), now I live in Japan and my place is much much smaller, like... less than half the size and no storage whatsoever. I have 20 dolls, only 1 is under 60, another is 60, 3 65 and all the others over that.

      I just don't know what to do with smaller sizes. They don't pose as natural and look a lot more dolly like. I'm 36 years old my characters are mostly adults over 25, there are no mature enough MSDs. Not even the SD ones look mature enough for me.

      So I would say it's all about aesthetics or both face and body.

    20. I find it interesting that this question was posed with the premise that houses in the US were getting smaller. I didn't realise that was true. Here in Western Australia, with the exception of a minority of inner-city dwellers, houses seem to be getting bigger, often ludicrously so. Bigger rooms, more rooms, and all on smaller and smaller blocks of land. And furniture/electrical/whitegoods are getting bigger to fill these huge houses, which have fewer people living in them than smaller houses did in the past!

      I grew up in a *tiny* house, with a grandmother who collected dolls, ranging from palm-sized to four feet tall. She had around 700 dolls squeezed into our postage-stamp-sized living room, in cabinets, on shelves, on the floor, on furniture. So space wasn't an issue when I started collecting. (Although, I couldn't bear to live that cramped again.)

      I'm new to bjds, coming from Monster High, Neo and Middie Blythe, Dal, and Hujoo, so my first bjd, a 5Star tiny (30cm) felt HUGE. I swore I wouldn't go bigger, but the following month went to 45cm. At this stage he feels large and unwieldy, but no doubt I'll adjust and start looking at SDs. Either way, space won't make that decision for me!
