Why larger dolls?

Nov 17, 2012

1. Well, for me, I just like the dolls in that size. I prefer handsome boys and elegant girls. They are usually in large size. And when you have a whole family large dolls, you are just accustomed to the larger size and don't want change it. That's what I am thinking...

2. I just like them that way?
I guess one of the reasons I like dolls in sd size cause of their proportions & who can forget the endless potential of cool & glamorous clothes... >.<
Plus its easier to do storyboarding for them I feel..
Compared with a yosd/msd which would be in their schooling days..
& hard to advance in story..

Though it's a fact that they are cute and on the plus side, more portable...
Portability is the only issue I have with my sd doll.. >.<

3. 'The bigger the merrier'

But being serious. I think they're easier to customize and there's plenty of companies to choose from. Their facial expressions go from child like to really mature and I think that's awesome, but the reason why I prefer SDs over other sizes is that I feel them more 'real' I don't know how to put this in words... I have an MSD though and I love him, but just so I could have him in a bigger size I decided to bring his 'grown up' version with me which obviously will be an SD :)

4. "

So I was just wondering, why, with this diminishing size trend, why big dolls?

Is it quality over quantity? Do you have no intention to buy more dolls? Are they a replacement for children that you can't have or can't stand or maybe you're not ready for children yet? Does their size make it easier for you to dress them and give them face-ups and put their pieces back together when you unstring your large doll? Do they maybe make better companions than a YoSD or MSD? Maybe it's the only size you can find the age that you want your character to be?

Anyway, please set my misconceptions straight. I'm curious to learn why people like SDs."

I kind of like SD sized dolls because they tend to be more realistic. I used to own a lot of MSD's but over the recent years, I have done what a lot of people call "upgrading". It started out with taking one of my most played with characters and I decided to make him more mature, since he won't be staying 14 forever. I do not have children and am not married so this is a fun hobby for me. Then, since I made him larger, the smaller ones aren't in scale anymore so I kind of enjoy the SD or SD17's.

5. I like 60-65 cm. Many reasons are told by other already.

When I read this thread, I got questions - What is the largest available in the market? How large could BJDs be? 1 meter? 1.5 meter? life size?

6. Clothes. And the Tiffany Taylor doll I had when I was a kid. (Yes I just dated myself) But I loved that doll. And to a kid, she was HUGE. I remember Tiffany Taylor and playing with her and the trunk full of clothes my mother made her. The larger dolls are all that childhood happiness all grown up for me. Plus the challenge of making them great clothes just sweetens the deal for me. As cute as my little ones are and I love my little DC Hilary SO much, the 60-70cm dolls are really what makes me happy.

7. Well, there are a few companies that make toddler-sized dolls. 90cm, 105cm and there's two companies at least that make life-sized ones too. I think I found them by googling "life-sized BJD."

I'd LOVE a Trinity to add to my SD and 70cm dolls. She's 105cm, but the cost...:o

8. I'm in agreement with many of the posters that the larger dolls are more mature, elegant and easier to costume. The first doll I fell in love with was an EID, 70cm tall, and since I am trying to acquire the main characters from my novels, I had to stay with the large dolls so they all appeared to fit together. Fortunately, so far, IH has suited my needs with their EID's.

9. Well, I like SD doll cause as this thread mention, it's big. My concept is like, if you have a bigger house, you can put whatever you want and with bigger doll, the possibility of details is endless, especially in sewing and faceup.
But well, even an SD doll has it own disadvantages so why people like SD doll rely on their own preferences.

10. I like SDs and 70cm+ dolls because it's a great in-between size to sew for - you can fit a decent amount of detail into their clothing without requiring a huge amount of fabric, and as others have said, the sculpts tend to be more mature. Bigger dolls also have a bigger presence, which in itself can make them feel more 'real', like you can't ignore the fact that they are there in the room. When they are all decorated up as a display piece the large size really adds to the wow factor, while not being so large as to be impractical for taking to meetups or overwhelming to try and pose or carry.

As even larger sculpts (90-100cm+) have started to become more popular, I think the fascination with larger dolls may also have to do with the pursuit of bringing our fantasies to life. (-cough- In a totally non-weird way.) By making them more lifelike and closer to human scale there may be less of a gap for your imagination to fill in when you enter their world or set them in yours.

11. I could go large doll between 58 - 70cm, not more than that, since Im shorty :3

Its fun to carry someone big, I feel he/she more alive..

12. I scoured the WIKI page that this forum used to have and visited almost all of the sites that were listed, and found that the more mature and realistic sculpts were larger in size. Well...once I saw them, I couldn't pretend they didn't exist and settle for second best IMO.

13. I'm attracted to the larger dolls due to their body sculptures (more grown up) and faces. The larger size to me is just appealing like a whole cake vs a slice.

14. I tend to like bigger dolls because of 1) The clothing styles are nicer/more mature 2) They are more "lifelike" to be companions
3) I like the weight of them better than carrying around a tiny doll I might forget I'm carrying (haha) and 4) because I find a lot of really awesome props/furniture for the bigger dolls. My dad is also building me a 1/3 scale dollhouse for them and all their stuff.

15. Before I bought my first doll it was clear for me that the doll will be about 60 cm.
I don't know why I don't want to have smaller dolls. It is not so that I don't find them pretty but they dont tempt me to buy them.

16. My family often ask me why your dolls so large?)))
Because they are like the characters that I have created. Because they are easy to sew clothes with small parts as like as sets in on-line games or painted on fantasy paintings.

Little doll looks funny in multilayered clothes or with magic weapons, I think ))

17. I like all sizes, but larger dolls tend to be easier to pose and photograph. There's more leeway, a few millimetres won't matter as much if the entire thing is bigger.
