1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Why would I buy that if I could make it myself, and other untrue thoughts I tell myself

Sep 16, 2022

    1. I'm pretty much the opposite in that I feel, "Why should I try to make this when someone else has already done it so much better than I ever could?"
I'm really more into photographing the dolls so I get my creativity satisfaction that way.
I do cobble props and things together sometimes but I'm also the type that is never quite satisfied with stuff that I make myself. I'll always notice the imperfections.
Also, I believe that hunting down that perfect outfit, prop, wig, pair of eyes, etc., is an art in itself!

    2. This was what I told myself for faceups, that I would learn how to do them myself eventually. While I still do plan to learn how to do faceups and have the materials ready, due to lack of time recently I've decided to get company faceups for a few of my newer dolls too! This way I'll at least have a doll or two to keep me company while I work on the others :3nodding:

    3. I got a couple of these.

The first one is the opposite to the OP, I guess - "I used to love crafting as a kid - I should just let myself "enjoy" making the perfect outfit instead of buying something that's just "good enough"." The thing is I don't think I enjoy crafting and I don't think I ever really enjoyed crafting - I was just so picky and unwilling to compromise (and poor) that I HAD to make it myself. I love art, I do it professionally. I know how to sew. But aside from occasionally mending clothes to give them new life, I don't enjoy it. I need to stop thinking that some day I'm suddenly going to "enjoy it" again (because it never actually happened).

The second lie is that I need my dolls to match my characters and therefore they must have the perfect outfits to match them. I REALLY need to just start buying doll stuff that suits my aesthetic and that makes me happy. I don't need the perfect character doll. Again, I don't actually think I enjoy having those, lol.

    4. Ooh boy, I do this with pretty much everything and will acknowledge it's a bit of a problem. A lot of it stems from thriftiness, but there is definitely the "I objectively know how to do x thing, so I shouldn't spend money paying for it from someone else" even if it's something I might not like doing or have the energy/ time to do. I'm trying to be a bit better about it, but it's so ingrained that it's a bit daunting to not try to do everything myself.

    5. Over the years I've had these thoughts about all kind of art and craft projects I could do, but I realised sometimes I appreciate other people's creations too. I can be too harsh on myself which I find many artists and crafters do too so when I make something it can be difficult for me to just enjoy it and not see the flaws in it so sometimes I just prefer to have someone else's creations. The thought "Why don't you just make it yourself" is far more easier said than done. Let's give ourselves permission to buy the stuff we like and enjoy it :) and make stuff when it's fun.

    6. My dolls are still so naked because I keep saying I will sew it myself.

My problem is that I am picky. But I am so picky I sometimes out-picky myself in addition to other sewists.

But it does cut back on some impulse buying because I never want to settle for "I like it okay" over "I love it."

Ironically, I think I buy simple clothes decently often because I despise sewing t-shirts and stretch fabrics.

I used to buy a lot of Freedom Teller because they are basically the best tailors on the market in my opinion, but then I got dolls that were not their default sizes and started veering into different fashions. The problem with wanting very particularly tailored clothes is that it gets very troublesome when the bodies my dolls have aren't the most popular sizes.

The LLT Ballerino body is similar height/size to the Luts SSDF, but the proportions are different. Ballerino has the booty while SSDF is the flattest butt ever so the pants sit very differently. lol Ballerino's chest is also a smidge bigger and alas a centimeter or two is a very big deal in Doll Land.

My current obsession with 1800-1820 clothing and guys were nearly getting themselves sewn into their trousers (like there's caricatures about guys being unable to squat to pick up something they dropped on the floor, lol) so it is very hard to avoid specifically tailoring to one doll only.

I also love pear-butt chubby dolls and nearly no one sews clothes for that size.

The only doll I have 300% thrown in the towel for ever sewing for is my Batchix Clever Little. He is too skinny and small for me and I am saving up to hire someone to sew an entire ensemble for him. Like I don't even care how much I need to pay for it. I don't want him to be naked and I don't wanna do it myself!

Since I got a 3D printer, I also try to make myself do more props but oh man sculpting hard :...(

    7. I make wig, eyes and do face up for my doll by myself and shopping for clothes, shoes and other accessories. I only do it because it’s fun for me not for saving money, btw making things by yourself never save money, the cost of materials and time are always higher than you can expect. Everyone enjoy this hobby in their own way. Some like to do photo shot, some like handicraft , Some like to dress them and some just have fun by watching their dolls. What really matters is you are happy
