Will that "One Detail" Prevent you from Buying?

Dec 22, 2010

    1. I've got some odd nitpicks that will prevent me from buying a doll. The craziest one I can think of is that I'm super picky about the size and shape of the ball joints in the wrists and ankles. It has to be big enough to be flush with the hand AND arm, yet not bulbous and it has to be a half ball comming out of the hand/ankle not a full or mostly full ball stuck to the bottom of the hand.

    2. Sometimes, when I notice a flaw I don't like about a doll, it's too late because I've already fallen in love.
My iplehouse Tania has a very curvy body and it's hard to clothe, especially for a first-time doll owner like myself. I didn't know this when I first saw her, but it was too late because I really had fallen head over heels.
But now, I've come to love her body and I'm prepared to deal with the obstacles that come with it. :)

    3. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?

YES. I avoided saving up for a Bambicrony Ellen because without her face-up, she has bulge-y eyelids. I love the sculpt to death, but if I can't completely love it both blank and with a face-up, it's not for me. I'm so picky, I whittled through almost all Fairyland's Littlefee because of one detail I didn't care for. It's not bad, since I can avoid huge bouts of "Dolly Want".

Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?

I'm not going to buy a doll I don't truly love. It's not really fair to anyone. I probably wouldn't give the doll away or sell it because it will make me guilty, and the poor thing while just sit in their box in my closet or something. :(

    4. It depends, if its something minor like a faceup, then no. But if its lip shape or resin color, then yes. With modding most things can be changed, but I would rather not have to do modding to be pleased with the apperance of my doll.

    5. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?
Yes. I have not bought Luts Odin because of the form of his jaw. I didn't notice it when saw his pictures for the first time, but then... When I want to buy a doll, I usually wait a month to think it over. It's very useful. As the result, I neser sell dolls and absolutely sutusfied with ones that I have.
Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?
Yes. Inever buy a doll if I don't like even the smallest detail.

    6. I'm a bit of a mod-whore and do-it-yourselfer, so for me it really depends on the detail in question. At the same time, I'm extremely picky when it comes to buying/adding to the wishlist dolls that are for pre-existing characters. I have a very set idea of what they look like in my mind, and I will not accept a doll that doesn't at least meet the base requirements. This does not mean I can't find the doll beautiful, though! ^^ And add them to the wishlist regardless, but for character dolls, I'm terribly picky. >.>;;

    7. I find this hard to answer!! I am very picky, and can get a little obsessive over details, but if a sculpt grabs at my heartstrings and keeps pulling, I've found that works for me and I'm prepared to overlook and work with any 'imperfections'.

That said, there is 'one detail' that has stopped me so far buying a Dollshe Saint - I love the original SA Saint so much that I worry I won't be satisfied with the new OE or SA face if I get him... I guess I'm just going to have to really love the face-up!!

    8. Im pretty picky about detail so in short yes it can ruin a purchase from me.

    9. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?
absolutely yes. I wanted a Supia Roda for a character of mine. I thought she'd be perfect, then I noticed she has a thick neck. I couldn't get past that at all. I still think all the Supia girls are beautiful, but I can't own one.

Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?
This can be a tough question, the "flaws" in a dolls appearance may be something you can not only tolerate but like after awhile. Kara Klum has huge ears. I didn't know it until I had one, but really...they're big lol. It was a little off-putting at first, but I not only got over it, I actually love his giant ears now...They're all pierced several times and he can hold his face mask on much better than my El can XD
Had I let big ears sway my decision and I had not gotten him, I'd have cheated myself out of my very favorite mold. That's really not something you want to do.

    10. I think it's absolutely fine to avoid a doll if there is anything about it that bothers you. These dolls are much too expensive to own if you don't love everything about the ones you buy. It's possible to be so smitten with a doll that you can overlook something small that bothers you but if, to you, it's something big, and something you are unable to mod/change or don't want to change, then don't buy the doll.

At this point, all of my dolls of roughly the same sizes are able to wear clothes interchangeably but I might consider not buying a new doll if he/she were of a height or had measurements quite different from any other dolls I own which would necessitate buying all new clothes, wigs, or eyes, etc.

    11. I was recently absolutely stunned by one of the new Souldoll molds and had already jammed her into the shopping cart numerous times, only to always end up cancelling it. Why? Cause something was bugging me. Overall she was beautiful and had all the perks I like in a doll, but her nose put me off of buying her.I feel bad now, realizing how bad it sounds... Bit picky maybe, but hopefully it'll save me couple quid ! x)

    12. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?
Actually, it has. I originally wanted to buy a BBB or RS Mei, but I had been told they were slim minis, and that a lot of people sewed for their slims. I didn't know how to sew with a machine, nor was I in the mood to try back then. And there were other details later on that made me feel that this wouldn't be a good first doll for me; too much first maintainance and all.

I also had looked at some of the other Dollmore photos. Pado (a very popular DM Kid) was much too frowny and grumpy in owner pics, compared to the company pics. And there had been some dolls who looked nice at certain angles, but from straight on the mouths didn't look right to me.

Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?
I would suggest, if it was the first scenario, to not buy. I combed DoA for advice, and pics, and all that jazz, and realized that this doll wasn't going to work out for me. If you're ok learning to sew for your doll, because you'll need to do it all the time, then maybe a doll like that would still work out.

But if it was the second scenario, I suggest looking at owner photos. Not every owner photo employs the tricks the companies used in photography. Some are pretty basic, so you can easily see what you'll be getting. Remember, companies are trying to sell a product, but most users are just happy to show you their doll.

I guess it all depends on your set of standards. Are you willing to mod the doll if you have to? Are you willing to sew all the time? Do you want a doll with a semi-upset expression, rather than a neutral one? If you know you're not willing to do some things, or that what you will need to do before you can fully enjoy the doll seems like too much, then don't go for it.

I was also extremely critical when considering getting Emma, a DM Kid Flocke. Because the first doll excursion hadn't worked out, I probably annoyed people with questions, combed through DoA again for any tidbits or info. Luckily, wherever I went, nothing turned me off - I didn't have to sew if I didn't want to, there weren't *a lot* of owner pics, but the ones I saw, she looked the same as she did in Dollmore, they posed well, they were addictive... I was sure I could continue saving and go through with it.

    13. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?

If it's something that you really can't stand, and if you're the type of person who will just start thinking about that ONE PART every time you look... Then it's probably not a good idea to buy.

I try to make sure there's not something that I can't stand when I'm considering buying a doll. They are a lot of time and money and there are lots of dolls out there. If I wait a while I can find something I think will be perfect.

I avoided buying Soom's Euclase because I didn't like his narrow nose much. But then I saw owner photos and thought that it didin't look that bad, really. I was still drawn to him, so I finally got him. Although I DO tend to see flaws once I'm aware of them, it's not always a deal-killer with me... so I thought I could live with it. And I'm glad I got him. (although I still wish he had a slightly thicker nose!)

Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?

I would, unless you think everything else is so perfect that it doesn't really bother you that much. Otherwise, skip the doll. There are lots of choices out there and new dolls being made every day.

Of course, for experienced doll owners, there's always the option of modding, but what about newbies such as myself?
      Advice?

I'd wait and see. Maybe you can look into modding--or see if it's something that someone else can do for you, and if you continue to see no better dolls, then you can buy. But check with a modder to see if it's something that can be done in the first place. And look into modded dolls to see if you think the mods will work for you. Sometimes it's something that can't be modded easily... or not worth thinking of modding.

    14. There are only a few things that are deal breakers for me when it comes to buying a doll: namely, if the lips are too small or thin (I'm not much of a modder, and I'm broke- so that's a no for me.) or if it's too big and the head wouldn't work at any other size. (I don't buy anything over 65cm or under 30.) Those are the only two things that I feel that I can't change about a sculpt that would make me reject the idea of buying the sculpt. Everything else from face-up to nose to eye size and shape can be successfully modded by me after the fact.

I would say though, that a nagging doubt should at least make you wait. I personally hate the idea of throwing away money, so I'd hold off, look at more pictures, and see if this doll really calls to me the way it should. If it didn't, I'd say don't buy.

    15. It depends:

      1. Some owners will change the doll as they see fit; and doll company picture may be exactly what you get. You haven't seen it in person yet, so it could be a bit hasty to rule the doll out.

      But then there's:

      2. You ARE spending hundreds of dollars on this, and you should be 100 percent satisfied. Best to keep looking for more pictures, but if it really bothers you, then it's time to say no. It just happens - you can't buy all the dolls you'll ever think are pretty anyway.

    16. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?
Yeah, I would have bought a Zaoll if she was taller. I haven't found a SD body that looks right on her head yet.
Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?
If it's something that you can't change, then yes avoid it. If it needs work or customization, then I don't think it should stop you.If I can ever find the right body I will get my Zaoll

    17. I ended up not buying a Souldoll Chiron because of his girly slim nose. Just can't get past how slim and feminine his nose is. My personal preference for boy dolls is very, very masculine. I've since decided that only Iplehouse boys will do for my characters.

    18. I would buy if the offending part is something I could correct easily because I almost always customize them a little. Eyes too small; fine, easy to open them a little. Nose too small; no. Little too short; maybe they could wear platforms. Too tall; no. For me to shell out big bucks, they have to be damn near perfect for me. Experience has taught me to wait for the right doll to come along rather than buy one that needs extensive work to make me happy.

    19. It depends on the detail and what the rest entails.

Some things could be changed, for instance, like a nose shape or jawline -- but if it's a resin color that is hard to sand and mod, that might not be as possible. An outfit that comes with a doll can be taken off; same with a wig or eyes or faceup that doesn't 'fit'.

    20. One detail actually has prevented me from buying a doll. I have a weird pet-peeve about the shape of noses, I made the mistake of purchasing and AoD Juli without viewing a picture that really showed her features. The minute I saw her when I opened the package I was very disappointed, I hated her nose! I don't know if that's weird.
