Will that "One Detail" Prevent you from Buying?

Dec 22, 2010

    1. For what it's worth, she definitely looks white to me, I can see that some of the photos have been tinted but I can't see any reason to think the doll is actually yellowish. I also didn't notice anything odd about her neck, I think she's lovely.

    2. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?

Sadly and stupidly yes. :( When Volks released SD16 Ruby, I couldn't see past her bright red
Devine Brown lady of the stroll shall we say...lips. Or as one of my good friends so perfectly put it..."She's got lips that could suck the chrome right off a trailer hitch!"

Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?

Maybe. If it's a relatively easy fix of one feature, and the doll is otherwise perfect to you, I'd go for it. In my case, I should've bought Ruby and either repainted the lips like my friend did on his, or I could've sent her to someone else to repaint if I didn't feel up to doing it myself. My other problem was/is that the version Volks hasn't produced in any edition for sale yet, is the exact doll I desire...from head to toe. She appears in one of their books, but still has yet to be released. Again, if I bought an original release of this doll, I could have commissioned a repaint artist to give her a similar look to the doll in Another Yourself 2. To this day, I regret not being able to see the forest for the trees, as the banner beneath my signature bears witness. :(

    3. Has one detail prevented you from buying/bonding with your otherwise perfect doll?
Yes! I thought I wanted the Impldoll Gela for the longest time. Then I saw a non-company photo. Turns out that the face looks super derpy without a face-up, and the body is absolutely hideous--this boxy shape that is obviously meant to be swaddled in ten tons of clothing so you can't see how ugly it is. I want my dolls to look beautiful with or without face-ups and clothes, so I decided not to buy the Gela. Whenever I am interested in a doll these days, I look for non-company photos to verify whether or not the doll is worthwhile (for me).
Should you avoid buying if you feel this way?
I really do think so. There are so many, many dolls out there, and more to come. If you feel like you are buying out of duty, it's probably not the right purchase. I guess you could be surprised by an iffy sculpt, but I really wouldn't want to wager money on the possibility!

    4. I have this problem a lot. I'm like you, where I haven't bought my first doll. I've been browsing a lot, and looking into many sculpts, and for me the biggest problem has been the square elbow joint, which I just can't ignore. This is stopping me from buying many sculpts, and it's also what helped me narrow it down to choosing a minifee Chloe. Being a newbie, things like modding and even face-ups terrify me, so mouths and unappealing face-ups are a deal breaker. For one company, I noticed that the resin seemed to look really cheap in certain lights, and so even though I loved the face sculpt, and the elbow joints were decent, I couldn't bring myself to really consider her. On the other hand, little details that I thought made the doll unappealing turn out to just be the company's pictures of it looking a little off. The uncertainty, and my overall unfamiliarity with many dolls in person, make buying my first doll kind of stressful.

    5. I dont tend to like downturned lips, for example the earlier Doll leaves dolls, the newer dolls are so much nicer in my opinion.

This doesn't mean I won't change my mind but I this moment in time that seems to be my pet hate.

    6. i agree with a lot that has been said here, specially with somehow the company's pictures differing from the real thing :) when i bought my first doll, all i had seen of her was the pictures posted by the company, and she looked gorgeous! the make up when she came didn't look as bright and pretty, but like someone already mentioned, it wasn't a big deal because it's something that can be fixed, but i totally get were you are coming from, we have a lot in common, i like my stuff the way it is originally presented, if i later on find some sort of flaw i become hopelessly disappopinted lol. i have seen pictures of the dolls iam planning to get in the future, many on flickr and i have t say that the company pictures do manage to disguise a lot of things, i've been disappointed to the point of questioning myself if i really want such and such doll, but at the end i've realized that as long as the doll can be customized to my needs, it's no big deal. so that really depends on what kind of flaws it may have, unless is something major, like skin tones and stuff :)

    7. No, if can fix it. I rarely find a doll I really really like, so even if it has an aesthetic 'flaw' or quirk I don't like that is possible to be fixed, I'll still buy it.

For example, I just got my DiM Annabeth, I loved the style and her beautiful big lips, but certain things about her sculpt weren't suitable for the character I had in mind. So currently I'm sanding her 'droopy' eyes more open, shaving down her slightly too high and pointed nose, and subtly sanding down her podgy cheeks and too low brows. It sounds a lot but it's honestly so subtle, and even though no-one but me would probably notice (apart from the changed shape of the eyes - the most drastic thing), I'm a perfectionist and I can't help it haha.

I bought a DiM Laia as well, and although from the front I think she's perfect, I saw a photo of her profile and I wasn't too keep on her ski-slope nose, so now I own her I'll probably shave it down a bit.

Resin colour didn't even prevent me from buying my DiM girls, I stay away from such pale (and pinky) resins, and much prefer tans and yellow undertones, but they are so lovely I forgave that DiM don't offer a choice. The more I own them the less I care. The Laia is fine to stay the colour she is, but I would've preferred for the Annabeth to contrast a little in a more tan tone.

I won't, though, buy a doll with thin lips. I can't fix that. Also I don't like skinny jawlines, even if the rest of the features are lovely, I like strong or wide jawlines and can't overlook it. They are things I can't fix.

If I wasn't comfortable modding though, I wouldn't buy them. I would also have 3 less dolls in that case, because I also sanded down a pointy nose and sharp looking upper lip on a Doll Leaves Sisley. She was an impulse purchase though, I loved her jawline on the promo pics, and her adorable deer ears.

    8. oh! i been there!
when i started looking for a bjd i cross my path with photos from Bobobie mei, i thought she was the most wonderful and sweet and sweet doll ever, i made plans to purchase her, i dreamed about her i even made plans of how i wanted her wig and clothes to look, and after a long time of wishing and hoping to get her, i found a photo that made me change my decided as i become aware of her head shape from a side angle. didn't like it any more.

ofcourse sometimes you feel that maybe you should get the doll after so many time of wihisng for it, but... really? are you going to expend lots of money on a doll you don't want that much just because its difficult to accept you don't have the same feelings for it?
that why i also havent had the chance to get a BJD im quite picky and can´t really point out a doll and say "she is the one" and i don´t want to expend a lot of money on something i wont enjoy that much.

but in certain cases, if the "flaw" is something smaller, i can handle it, i have other dolls, and if you look at them from certain angle they look odd, but it something not that big, and that sometimes you wont even notice as the flaw is irrelevant compared to the rest of her beauty-

    9. I don't think that when it comes to buying a BJD theses day that you can really count on their pictures. And if you read the small print it will tell you that the doll may not look the way she, or he does in their picture. Now it is up to you. Do I, or Do I not want to take a chance with with doll. I am all over the place when it come to me, and the dolls that I buy. There are just some thing that matter more to me than others. And some times I just go with it. I want really know until I have the doll in my hands.

    10. It would depend on the detail, but that's a definite yes. If it were a simple mod like an eye opening, I don't have any problem with that. Lots of artists here can do that easily. But say I needed an elf and the sculpt I was looking at didn't have elf ears, it'd be a deal breaker. That seems like a far too complex job to be able to find someone who does it really well and I wouldn't have to wait months for it to be done. I'm super impatient. XD

    11. Yes, I've had that happen... the fingers/fingernails on female Limhwa hands creep me out for some reason. I wanted to get a Limhwa girl... but I don't want to have to look for new hands for her if they look as creepy in person as they do in the pictures.

    12. I'm really considering getting a Minifee boy, but the big head, narrow shoulder thing bugs me to no end. I like realistic proportions, but I like posing too. So much for having cake to eat...

    13. Ugly looking joints have prevented me from buying dolls I absolutely love , because I just can get over the weird looking knees and elbows. I am trying to get over that, it makes me frustrated because it is oftern the most beautiful sculpt ever, but those pesky elbows and knees.......

    14. I am still in the "I'll know it when I see it" kind of phase.

Though...I do find real beefy male dolls kinda scary...xD Mostly because they're just massive looking. Though, I wouldn't put one off the list. I also don't really like overly feminized male doll faceups, though that could be fixed too. Even the mold could be modded.

I think I like the more shaped torsos of dolls, then them being split or jointed. Though, I could always send the torso to be modded if it becomes and issue.

What peeves me so bad though, and will put me off from buying a doll...is the knee joints. Oh.Mai.Gawd. For some reason that just grinds my gears. I avoided buying the body of a doll I wanted, because of those blasted knees, and I am still considering swapping the legs for the girl legs!

That is the only thing that seems to really bug me...the knees.

I will not buy anime/manga looking dolls...only because I am not really into that. Although I do find them cute, just not my thing.

And the reason why I haven't bought a girl doll, is the breasts. >:/ Though I have seen some dolls with decent boobage, and don't look like a miniature blow up toy.

    15. I'm rather fussy so if there is something I find less than ideal about a doll I stop considering it and make to plans to buy it, unless the rest is perfect then I try to find out if I can get the poblem modded (like sanding a nose or something).

    16. I am the same way with certain eyes and mouths. They would be a deal-breaker for me, but I won't advise you to buy or not buy. I don't know if you could accept it or get it modded. It's a personal choice anyways!

    17. I've fallen in love with several dolls, but for some reason as soon as I discover that they have a joint on their waste I no longer want them, no matter how beautiful they are, I just find it,ugly

    18. Noses I don't like have prevented me from so many Dream of doll orders in recent years. Most of their male dolls since maybe 2009-2010ish have had what I consider huge square-looking noses (compared to their older sculpts). Look at DoI Adolph. He could have been my dream doll if his nose was about 1/2 of the size it is. I wouldn't buy him and mod his nose because I like DoD's faceups (and for me personally it would be way too much effort to buy him blank, mod his nose, then send him back to them to faceup like "here i have improved the doll you sent me").
I noticed Azera and Orrl have nice noses but I didn't buy Azera because I don't want him to have elf ears and I don't feel like buying a doll I'll have to mod right now. (I'll probably buy him eventually though even though there's that one little thing.)
Generally though I won't buy a doll if there's any little detail I don't like about it.

    19. I really cant stand doll's with open mouths. :(

    20. I like the SD BJD ... But I can't stand their really long and pointy noses ... So I always end up getting tinier dolls >__<
