Will that "One Detail" Prevent you from Buying?

Dec 22, 2010

    1. Depends. I really want an Iplehouse Dexter, but Some things about his face have started to turn me off. And I'm unsure about his skintone. So major things that I can't mod might turn me off, but if I could mod it, I would still consider buying. And if I don't like the body, hybrids. I enjoy hybrids.

    2. I actually fell in love with HZ dolls when I was first looking for dolls, but when I realized he didn't have a middle joint I spent a LONG time deciding whether I wanted on or not. I looked around more and found other dolls I love more, and I'm glad I didn't get one as my first doll. I may get one in the future, but not immediately.

    3. I had the exact same thing happen recently. I had a doll I was dead set on, and later thought "oh, I don't really like this one detail," and now I'm doubting myself. I'll probably only ever be able to afford one, maybe two dolls at most, so I want it to be perfect. It makes it really hard to decide which one I really want the most ><

    4. I would say so. I'm picky. ;//u//; because once I notice something, even a small detail that i don't really like, I can't un-see it. That's why it took me forever to decide on my first doll.

    5. usually, clunky joints are a huge deterrent from me even liking the doll, however the next doll i plan to buy is a souldoll kanguk, and souldoll double bodies have some of the most obnoxious clunky knee joints i've seen. but i just love the doll so much i'll put up with it.

    6. It was in the end for me the resin wasn't dark enough...I chose to wait on shelling Vala because her sculpt..I didn't like it anymore...The Mei sculpt I wasn't in love with nor did I like RS's light tan anymore so I moved on to finishing over projects first. THEN a big doll can come.

    7. Skintone! I only collect NS dolls, even if I found a rare and limited grail doll that was WS, I would hold-out searching for a NS one(:

    8. The nose. I was considering buying a sd girl, looked through tons of pics and could not understand if she had a turned up nose or not. I asked the owners and confirmed the nose is slightly turned up. So I had to look for another doll and I was such a pity.

    9. The only thing besides money and the fact that the doll I want is currently out of stock is the body/resin match issue! I really want a Migidoll Ryu head FOR SURE. Thats the sculpt I fell in love with and I'm bound and determined to have one. However...the migi body for males..I've heard bad things about. I'm not a huge fan of it myself but I'm worried about just getting a head and worrying about finding a body from another company that would match the resin. I know body blushing could be a possible option for a quick fix but I'm also bothered by finding a person to do it. Well, not so much that, but the actual fit to the head as well. What if the body is too big/small for the head? I don't know the first thing about sanding anything or trying to find the best match. I guess that means I need to do some more research but that is honestly my biggest concern about buying my first doll...getting the head I want with a body I don't want but will prolly match, or just get a head and hope I order a body that fits/matches >.< Ughh..

    10. Overly large breasts.

    11. Unattractive noses

    12. It needn't, but I let the "one detail" stop me to control my want. Raising one's own standards is a decent self-control measure.

    13. I'm an Esthetician and study beautiful facial structures. As much as I would absolutely love to not be so picky, It's just kinda programmed into my brain now. I will find a doll that I am absolutely in love with. The body, the way they look with wigs, the size of the eye sockets, even the makeup the company puts on - but wait... It's nose isn't constructed exactly as I want it to look or even if it has the perfect nose that I'm looking for, it may not go well with the doll. Even the littlest things can completely turn me off of a doll that I once loved.

    14. I love Supia dolls, but if I were to get one she'd have to be in tan because the character is tan! However, the Supia tans are not suitable. I need perhaps a slightly darker version of Souldolls sandy brown.

I want to get the Limwha MSD boy, but again the character is tan, but his pudgy cheeks put me off and you can't sand the Limwha tan or it discolours.

So for me, the main problem is resin colours.

    15. From experience - I fell in love with the Hid sculpt from Dollzone and immediately purchased it. It was only after the fact that I was looking at user photos when I began to doubt and regret my purchase. His head is a little large and I didn't really like the shape of it. Something I should have noticed but for some reason in all the company photos - the angle was good.

I dreaded his arrival, wondering if I would end up having to take the loss and sell him but the moment I opened the box I was instantly smitten. He was a lot more charming that I had expected and his 'big bobble head' (which really isn't that big) just kind of grew on me. Couldn't imagine being without him now.

But what would stop me from purchasing a doll I love (ex: Roger from Iplehouse) is a predominate nose.

    16. This has definitely happened to me before. I adore quite a few male sculpts I've seen from various companies- but it tends to be either the body or the nose that bothers me. Often their nose is too large/pointy/odd and it just throws off the whole look of the sculpt for me. Sometimes the bodies just don't look quite right, not sure why really. They just look off.

Single jointed dolls, my Two.S.Doll Mayi is adorable! But her single jointed knees bother me so much that I rarely take her off her shelf.

Weird knees...I used to HATE Doll Zone BJDs because something about the knee mechanism made me really uncomfortable. It just looked wrong and it drove me nuts seeing their knees! I now own three DZ dolls and I think they're lovely. I've grown to not mind their knees so much, but I still think they look very odd.

I have a Volks Mimi head and she's cute, but again...the nose is so pointy I can't see myself keeping her as a permanent member of my collection. She'll probably be a practice head for a while as she has been, but I have no intentions of keeping her around unless I mod her nose.

    17. I have a really limited amount of money to spend on dolls so I really do think about buying a lot! I put special attention to the nose and the body, If I can't make a good hybrid, no matter how much a love the face sculp I will not buy the doll. I only have one doll and I am perfecting her, so she will be the only one for a while.

    18. the face....it all has to do with the face. Just has to be perfect. If there is one bit I don't like about it....it would grow and grow until I decide the doll is ugly even though at first glance I thought it looked really nice. So yeah....it's dangerous for me to impulse buy. I have to do a lot of homework and check out all the owner's pics from every angle. I tend to like real-looking dolls more but they often have quirky little parts that put me off.

    19. Detail matter to me more than I first thought. Initially when I first joined this hobby and saw a cute doll I really liked I thought "the eyes are a bit weird, but with the right wig and face up that will work out", but it never did. If something bothers you on the pictures then chances are it will hassle you even more when you actually have the doll and want it to look like what you first imagined it would.

At the moment I am in a tight spot with Supia Haeun and Muriel. They're just so gosh darn beautiful. My problem with Haeun is that she's too perfect, if there is such a thing. I'm afraid that I'll just turn her generic when she's so pretty. With Muriel I don't particularily like the spot between the bottom of her nose and the top of her lips. Its too long. I'd love to get my hands on more owner photos so I can judge whether it is the light/face up in the promo pics or if it actually is kind of iffy.

    20. Lips... I can't stand odd-shaped lips. For many months I wanted an F60 Karsh for one of my characters but recently I started to look at the sculpt again and his nose/mouth (in profile) just bothers me and I have no idea why... It started so suddenly, too. It doesn't bother me in the least on the MNF version, though. :| Unlucky for him, but I don't really care for MNFs, plus the size wouldn't fit his character. (And now, a sculpt I never really cared for seems to be an excellent match for him.)

Open lips of any kind almost always turns me off from a sculpt. I thought Luts Nihal could be this same character but the fact he has an open mouth doesn't sit well with me. (It's not that noticeable but knowing it's there would bug me...x.x) ...Strangely, I'm not bothered by IOS Infernale and his crazy tongue. :sweat I wouldn't want to own one, though...
