Wiring -vs- elastic

Jan 21, 2015

1. So there are alternate materials to string dolls. Do you prefer elastic, or wiring a doll? How do the older dollfie people feel about the skeletons? Ever have something odd about the way your doll was assembled or strung? What cool tricks have you discovered when it comes to holding your dolls together?

Lets discuss what's holding our doll families together.

My little trick is for my DC Ada. She is super tiny. I found using pipecleaners to string her works really well.

2. I'm still new, but from what I have done, the largest elastic that will fit along with wire is a good combo. I did this on my son's Resin Soul Pi and it worked well. He can touch his face and do all sorts of poses as long as his tail and wings are clear! I used white floral wire. My secondhand dollshe came to me with skinny elastic and I put 5mm elastic in him. He holds much better and stronger now. If I gave him wire, it would have to be thin but strong. I strongly detest hot glue but have thought of trying kips in hip joints of my larger boys.

3. Well wiring your doll is generally done with elastic stringing. I don't think I have ever seen an ABJD that was strung with wire alone.

4. Some OT porcelain BJDs are strung with steel springs- is that what you are referring to? Otherwise as Victoria Victrix said BJDs are always strung with some sort of elastic string, and sometimes wire is added to increase stability & posability. :)

I am interested in the springs. But I was mainly talking about things like mollym elastic wire combos.

It's not super common but some string their dolls with very thin wire alone. It's not common because it's slightly a nightmare. I do this on my dolls who hold poses bad and it totally fixes all problems. But it's a whole day project.

6. Usually, thick enough wire and maybe hot glue sueding is enough for me to be happy. However, that was just NOT cutting it for my Volks SD10, so I had a friend help me add wiring to his legs and it helped him so much.

I've had a couple of dolls come with kips, and I can't stand them. I feel like they get stuck in joints, twist and block posing more than they help. The ones in the IslandDoll neck joint were the worst! I couldn't even move my Louis's head without it riding up in the head hole and getting stuck.

But I think my favorite "not average" thing is the C-hook in the heads of BlueBlood Doll, IslandDoll, Jie doll, and maybe others. I LOVE how easy it is to grip that hook with a finger and just pop the head right off. S-hooks usually are too small to get my finger in, hard to grip, require pliers or a ribbon or something to pull them up, and sometimes are so small, heads slip off. The C-hook solves all of those problems (unless your doll's head or neck hole is just too small to accommodate a C-hook).

I guess I'm just pretty simple and traditional. Strong thick elastic, c-hooks and hot glue usually make me happy enough.
