It is an attempt to call forth beings that have gradually faded from modern memory and bring them into the very center of our lives as we live in the present. — Wooray The first character of Project 〈Homyeong (呼名): To Call the Forgotten〉 During the Japanese colonial period, when the Wildlife Extermination Campaign was being carried out, a leopard is chased by hunters and meets its death. From her womb, the mountain spirit rescues the unborn cub and brings it back to life. Blessed with divine power, the leopard—Wooray— becomes a being that belongs fully to neither life nor death, and grows at an unusually slow pace. After the Korean War, Wooray wanders near the U.S. military camp in Yongsan in the form of a leopard, where he encounters a Black soldier named Leroy. Mistaking the cub for a native wild cat of Korea, Leroy finds Wooray endearing and shares leftover food from the base, offering him companionship. He is the first human to show Wooray genuine kindness. Even after time passes and Leroy returns to his homeland, Wooray continues to linger around the Yongsan camp. Before he knows it, Itaewon becomes his playground. When Wooray later learns to take human form, it is only natural that he is drawn to Black culture while learning about the human world. Then one day, after fully indulging in the nights of Itaewon, Wooray is appointed as the mountain spirit of Seoul’s landfill mountain.
