1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Working in the hobby

Nov 11, 2014

    1. Ehhh, no, probably not. I am not business-minded nor do I like anything about retail.

    2. Yes exactly, when I started this thread I was talking about working in anything BJD related, even doing face ups and that. I hope someday I could do that, it's a true talent! The people who do well from commissions amaze me, their work is always fabulous.

I think this thread is getting carried away about retail, I meant anything bjd-related, commissions or online or whatever. But thanks for your input, I feel you :P

    3. I think it will be interesting to open a cafe that includes dolls. Perhaps, consultant/curator type that advise others on the interesting aspect of dolls, Korean ceremics, Japanese prints, etc.

    4. I really would love to open an etsy shop to sell adorable bjd dresses and outfits. I'm just not at that level yet. I'm still in the learning stages. While I can make pretty dresses for myself I don't feel they have that professional quality to sell to others. I love making doll clothes and will continue to improve. Perhaps in the future it will be a possibility.

    5. If I would have free time during vacation, I would really like to sell some of my handmade doll outfits. :) Wonder who will buy my product. Excited...

    6. Have you ever consider doing classes for bjd enthusiasts? Like for people that want to design clothes for their dolls, there can be a clothes making class. Or if there was a face-up class, that would be so helpful. Stuff like that seems a little possible, maybe. :XD:

    7. Opening a small niche business in this economy is a good way to lose more money than you could imagine.

    8. Own my own shop? No! Too much work and I'd never have enough time to play with bjds as I'd be too tired!
I worked at a small postal store by myself for three years -no vacation, no holidays (except Thanksgiving day, and Christmas Day). I was THE employee and did everything -never again!

However, I would love to work with bjds -learning the 'secrets' of the trade so to speak. Sculpting, mold making, and casting. A real dream would be to go on a factory tour and see bjd's being made. Maybe some day, when like so many have said, I win the lottery, or something, lol.:XD:

    9. Yes, I would LOVE to own my own doll shop. Like you, OP, I want to own a tea cafe/doll shop. I've actually thought about this a lot! I live in Cincinnati, where Blythe was manufactured. So I have very seriously considered opening a Blythe shop that also sold BJDs and their sundries. I think it would be so lovely to own such a shop, and I'd love to go into work every day if I knew i was going to get to work with doll fans all day long. Maybe someday in the distant future, my dream will become a reality. :)

    10. I would absolutely adore to open up a little etsy shop someday to draw people's dolls. Well, I would love to open an etsy shop selling ANYthing really, but BJD related I think drawing them would be closest to my skill set as I neither sew nor paint. Unfortunately I don't know how comfortable I'd ever be taking commissions, and as selling pre-made doll pictures likely have zero market this remains just a little daydream.

    11. I think working in the hobby would make me into a doll-shopaholic. Seeing beautiful dolls all day, I think I'd end up buying too many @_@

    12. I would loooooovvveee to learn how to sculpt my own dolls, but selling artist dolls seems really difficult right now because so many people are doing it and the cost of production is so high! My uni has a 3D-Printing machine and they hold classes on rendering things in 3D, so maybe I'll look into doing that so I can live out at least a lil bit of my fantasy of being a doll artist!

    13. I've been looking into becoming self-employed for a while now and dolls are part of my inspiration to do so. Originally my plans were to sell fabrics as I love sewing and of course sewing for my dolls. Whilst I've been investigating options I have been looking into becoming a dealer, but that would take a lot of leg work that I don't have time for at present with being in full-time employment. I have a few plans to create my own line of dolls (which will be BJD monster type unusual dolls) but also due to constraints with my current living situation this isn't possible. I am set to move early next year though and will actually have a workshop of sorts to use so things may start to move forward :) So yes, I'd love to work in the BJD industry in some shape or form and I am fairly determined to get there! I dread to think that I'll just wittle my life away carrying on with my current role in insurance!!!

    14. That's fantastic!! I wish you the best of luck! <3 <3

Since I've made this thread, I've decided I want to switch to an international business major, perhaps I can end up working for an established bjd company someday! ;D

    15. I wouldn't mind having a little BJD clothing line or something. I love to sew original designs for myself and my dolls so there might be a profit in it for me somewhere. It wouldn't go beyond an online store, however.

If I lived closer to MoC, I'd try to work there just as a part time gig, though.

    16. Hehe, thanks :) I currently sew but only for my BJDs as again time constraints with work prevent me from investing more time in this area. I do all my own face-ups but they are more tailored to my taste at the moment. I'm learning though, so hope to offer commissions at some point soon (much sooner than I can actual start making and selling any BJDs anyway).

    17. That's awesome!! yeah, a lot of times I wish I lived in Denver so I could work for Denver Doll Emporium. I've visited before and the ladies are so great there! I might look into that for the summer or something ;) That's so cool you sew your original designs though, that's a talent I'd love to have!
