Would anyone break a doll for the sake of "art?"

Aug 30, 2006

    1. What type of doll is she? A lot of companies offer optional hands that you can purchase separately -- perhaps you could get an extra pair so that you'd have spares if anything went wrong?

BTW, a "pin vise" (small hand-held twist drill) works really well for resin, and you can get different-sized bits -- I recommend that rather than trying to punch through the resin with an awl-type tool, or drilling with a power tool -- although if you're good with a dremel and have one that is easily controllable, that's another option.

Good luck, I'd LOVE to see your puppet-girl!

    2. "OMG, ARE YOU INSANE" jkjk
simply put no. ACK ! id freak if there was a hole in my dollfie, i do think itd be cool to see other dolls like that, cause i think that kind of art is interesting and cause many people can make it look amazing, but me i would mess up XD! so for mine =_= i would feel like he is broken. i think these dolls are art already, no holes, no broken-ness.

    3. double post , sry plz delete for te sake of "ART" = D

    4. I have a character coming up that will require some major modding.
I'm not going to break her and glue her back together, but I'm going to need to make many deep-cut lines in her from the neck down. She's going to be a robot, well, a humanoid mechanized thing, like steel-angel-kurumi or something like chii, but not a computer ^^. Her story is that the world finally evolved enough to have robots and she's the ultimate battle weapon the "Artemis 5.0" or just Artemis. And I'm going to blush her body in silver, so she looks more mechanical... I'm excited

    5. if the broken parts were part of the doll in my head... yes. but only if i was confindent in my (or a customizer's) abilities.

    6. I have a character who I'm going to be drilling into for his character. He has piercings on his hands that will need to be done, as well as some corset piercings on his sides that will be permanent. ^_^ I don't consider this 'breaking.'

    7. I wouldn't intentionally break a doll no. Drill in to it, carve it, sand it, reshape it using subtractive methods - definately.
For more extreme modifications, I look out for already broken dolls. ^^

    8. My Na-Nu-Ri head has scars fully down his face, but I didn't break him to obtain them. ^_^ All a matter of sculpting with medium.
My Soony's character has a sort of Stigmata thing happening, but I've yet to do it on the doll as I'm not sure how I'm going to go about it...though I probably won't mod holes through her wrists(yes, her "stigmata" is through the wrists).
I think the only instance I'm ever going to "break" a doll is if I get the dreaming Lishe head I've been wanting for my character Sariel...if just to open her eyes a bit more...

I think that there's alot you can achieve so much modding(such as scars and wounds and the like) without ultimately destroying the doll. I'm hoping that most of the modding I'll be doing when I open myself up for customizations will be dolly-safe. ^_^

    9. No I couldn't bring myself to do that. It took me a while to save up and I wouldn't want to risk not being able to get another one,

    10. I'm not for breaking, I'm for customizing ^^ I was actually considering in the far future to have a doll that is an amputee, or that has a synthetic leg...which would probably take a bit of 'breaking' ^^

breaking to me sounds like smattering it to bits, O_O which I wouldn't do.

    11. Heavy mods are awsome. I don't think I'd try to break my doll though, there's other ways of going about cracks you could paint them on, scratch them out, but I wouldn't suggest BREAKING it into pieces, ever.

    12. not break but mod as in tattoos, scars, peircings sure I would! but actually breaking a doll nooooo. I couldn't live with myself if I did that. Kazuki will have a tattoo and one of my Characters Malice has 3 ear peircings, a stud in his nose and some scars. If I'm confident to get Malice and to do that to him....(I dun't have very steady hands...)

    13. Er no 'cos I'd make a right mess of it and I take no pleasure from looking at dolls with scars, broken or missing limbs or hole in hand type stuff. When done well it looks good but not my thing.

    14. There's no way I would break a doll for no good reason... But I can and have altered them (Or had them altered by others on my behalf-) to suit specific characters or looks that I wanted them to have.

I have a Sleeping MiniFee Shiwoo with modded Dreaming eyes, a Sleeping Elf Shiwoo with modded 3/4-open eyes, and a Dreaming El who's been given a (very) extensive ear modification. If my open-eyed Harang ends up being Lir, he'll have a pretty wicked scar...

I'm sure there are people out there, especially in the case of my Elf Shiwoo because he was such a limited release, who would consider even those sorts of alterations "breaking" them... After all, they're not pristine and perfect any more, or in the same state they were in when they left the factory.

      But I don't.

I just see them as bringing the look of the resin avatar closer to the look of the character they were intended to represent. ^_^

    15. I guess that would depend on what you mean by "break."

Would I throw my doll on the floor as hard as I could, so the resin would shatter and I'd have little pieces to work with? ...Not for any reason that I could think of. I doubt I'll be grabbed by any idea that uses that method.

Would I do considerable "damage" to a doll to change its function or appearance, all in a planned and carefully executed manner? Yes. Quite willingly. I have plans to do many doll mods that could be considered damaging, not the least of these being adding two extra sets of arms to a doll, to create a six-armed character (based off of arachnids, not Hinduism - she'll also have two legs, so that's eight limbs) in the next couple months. I also have a 'secret' project I'm working on, and it involves far more drastic modification than that. In fact, I've finished the head at this point, and I removed about a full cup of resin shavings from it. There'll be even more done to the torso, and when she's done, I'm sure she'll be exactly what I wanted.

I also regularly pierce dolls - my own and those of others. I do it at every doll meet I go to, for free, because I enjoy it. Bellybuttons, ears, lips, eyebrows, and more. Rimming the ears of a doll is always fun and interesting, and the overall effect is very pleasing, to me.

    16. well, considering the types of modifications that can be done to them without even making a dent in the dolls whatsoever, my vote is no, i wouldnt break a doll for any reason. I personally dont see much of a point to breaking the doll for an effect. Not to say its BAD to break them if you want to...i think it could be neat, but i also cant imagine what could be done by breaking them, that couldnt be done with epoxy, paint or a bit of sanding.

    17. Thank you very much guys for posting all your neat ideas. I'm getting really excited to see some of these mods you have in mind. I need to reword what I meant of "breaking."

I think I meant just with a special tool, to break pieces off. Shattering a doll to pieces would be scary! I'd still would want to do it though. That's just me and maybe not the whole doll but a head....it just reminds me of that japanese hotel in which you go in to relieve stress and pay a lot of money to break anything they provide for you. And in my case, I'd choose a head that I really really hate. =/ But back to topic, ashbets right, if you can control your hand with a powertool, that would be awesome!!! I'm scared to pieces , no pun intended, to even consider piercing my girls ears lol.

    18. For me, scarring or breaking a hand or foot isn't such a big deal; since there are optional parts and if you no longer want the scarring, you can go and buy another set. ^^; But doing it to a doll on their back, legs, arms, etc., That, I couldn't do.. ;_; I can't even sand off Eva's upper lip, though I no longer think it's necessary; the painting Volks did on her is more perfect than I could have ever hoped for. ^_^

    19. Even if you tried, unless you had a nice n' hefty hammer, I don't think you could throw your doll's head to ground and have it bust to peices like porcelin XD resin's more durable than you'd think, I believe.

    20. All of my boys are "people" to me, so I wouldn't do it to any of them. But, if I ran across a "person" who had some extensive scarring/piercing/tattooing/etc. then I would definitely go for it.
