1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would anyone break a doll for the sake of "art?"

Aug 30, 2006

    1. I don't think "breaking" is really the right word. Breaking is an accident, modding is another story. ^^ For scars and stuff, yes, I can see where other people would do that. I wouldn't, just because I'm too chicken. XD I did pierce my boy's ears, but only because it wouldn't kill me if I changed my mind afterwards. I still need to pierce my second boy's ears. xD

    2. I was going to buy the broken Tan El for a character that just popped up when I saw him. His neck was broked due to the one piece system. But he was coming that way. He was to have a repair that looked like a scar.

    3. The one with a hole in his hand that I think you're talking about is an..F-29 i'm sure...and his name is Mikka, and his owner is onegreyelephant?

I'm not sure if that's the one you're talking about..

But a doll i'm planning to get SOMEDAY
WILL have scars and such on him.

    4. I probably would, to give it the full effect that paint is so hard, or not able to create.

    5. One of my upcoming dolls is going to be modded sort of like a Cecile, with the scar on her face (and dyed a different colour) and have a hand alteration. She's also going to be an Obitsu, so if I messed up at any point I could replace _any_ part of her for under $40. (I love Obitsu :))

    6. Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

I've seen some mods, wounds to be specific, that made me cringe in pain! But that was the intent.

There's an eposde from the original Star Trek. An enity lived inside a box. Whoever opened the lid and looked at the being went blind. The question was - was it too ugly to bear or too beautiful?

Mods, extreme or otherwise, are up to the owner. To quote Shakespeare, "To thine ownself be true."

    7. Yea, the first one to pop up in my mind was Mikka. I'm a big fan of Mikka! :D

For me, i won't do anything irreversible to my boy's head, not even piercing his ears or any tattoo. As for the body, it's replaceable so i guess there's still room for regret should one day i decide to get it modded?

BUT, it will hurt me to put him through pain. So, no modding for the moment.

    8. if i had a specific plan and more skill, then yes.

    9. I've seen some wonderful modding and I'm all for it! However, like Akasha, I'm also a coward. XD If I ever wanted some sort of modification, I would hire someone else to do it for me. I'm too afraid of ruining my doll. ^_^

    10. Yes and yes.

I'd "disfigure" one for the sake of modding (which I plan to do with my next boy), and I'd actually BREAK a non-limited doll for art's sake. Preferably if I wasnt the one who paid for it hahaha. Itd have to be a female doll, then I wouldnt have any problem with it. I think itd be beautiful, I'd take hundreds of black and white photos of it.

    11. Breaking is hitting it to bits with a hammer... tearing it up, scarring it, adding burn marks or taking bits off is just extreme modification. Like with people.

    12. Of course. Then again, I'm one of those weird ass people that bring home an expensive lamp to break it in two and attach it to the wall. I'm already having plans next time if a 'broken' doll comes up. Crack the face in half, and screw that sucker into a wall. But that's just me.

    13. If I knew how to and knew I wasn't going to screw it up, yes. Hence the reason Hayden has spare hands... so I can practice for when I give him the actual scars XD

I have a friend that tore two dolls apart for her major art work in the 11th grade. They weren't nearly as expensive as BJDs but she did ask if I'd let her cut out his eyes. She was very dissapointed when I told her she wouldn't have to.

    14. I personally would not maim my doll, since I've totally taken to him, and feel it would destroy my heart if I messed up his body in any way. I understand why other people do it, though. They (hopefully) own the dolls they're maiming, and if they think it's worth it for the sake of "art" or whatever by all means let them do it!

    15. Yes. If I thought it was benificial to my artistic expression. I would not do it lightly however since they are rather expensive, but I would have to qualms in doing it.

    16. No. Never.
But I'm one of those "old fashioned" people who does not think that scars, maiming etc. is acceptable. I know there's people out there who do, and that's fine for them. I don't look at their dolls and never will. But for my resins family, I wouldn't even consider it.

    17. my boy has tattoos now and ear and eyebrow piercing which is part of the character I wanted for him but I would not consider actually maiming him

    18. At a risk of being shamefully shunned the answer is yes. As someone else commented, breaking implies an accident and I would love to be very decisive about a mod. I have not the skill to do so as yet. Mmm, Somewhere,(can't remember), maybe if you search art dolls?, There is a female doll whose body has become a violin made of the muscle and sinew of her internal organs, it is so graceful:aheartbea.

My vision is along the lines of a sculpture I made that is non doll related. It s a fairly brutal piece and I don't wish to offend but there is a pump that lets fake blood pump through a pool at the bottom and back to the er..figure. I would like to to this with a doll and that that would involve making one side into a ribbed skeleton with obvious internal organs. Yep, strike me down forever if you must;). I really must do this as it is a highly personal bit of expression. I doubt I would dare post pic here though so I guess it will remain a bit of personal madness or art, up to me what I would call it and you but I admire many scarred and erm, slightly mutilated dolls I have seen on here and elsewhere:).

    19. I wouldn't personally because I have neither the guts or the skill to do it properly. But with that said, if someone feels that it would fit the character perfectly, they know what they are doing and execute it well then yeah, why not? :) I wouldn't be all that comfortable with it for art though, more for modding purposes really...

    20. To me every doll is about a character and story... and sometimes certain extreme mods can be seen as "ruining" a doll..

I've done it before.. and I'd do it again if it was appropriate for what I want!!
