Would anyone break a doll for the sake of "art?"

Aug 30, 2006

    1. If it was a cheaper doll, like a Bobobie?

      Absolutely.

With no hesitation at all. xD

If I had a good concept for something using a 'broken' doll, I would in an instant. The money that goes into it, when it's for art, doesn't bother me. I've probably spent every bit as much on markers as I would for a small inexpensive doll. Alot of my concepts, when it comes to doll-based art, revolve around the idea of broken, forgotten pieces still being worth something, still having value. Even talking about this has given me an idea. It would involve more or less smashing the lower body, and giving a 'pieced together' look to rest. Which could even involve cutting apart the head and putting it back together. Would I still do it? Yup. I'm not squeamish when it comes to art. xD

    2. I think anyone would.
But to me, what's the point? if it's keeping in line with the character, than fair enough, go for it! :D
Some may argue that if you spend $500-700 you can do whatever you like to the things.
You wouldn't smash a lambo into a tree because you can do 'whatever you like' with it, so why a doll?

To mod, yes, to break it, no.

    3. Well, I dont think even for a character Id have the nerve to do it to a full doll.

But as was mentioned previously in a former post... if the certain doll I had in mind was from a store that sold extra appendages for it and that could be bought separately (legs, arms, torso, hands, even spare head). I would risk it and play with those pieces and then replace parts of the full doll with those pieces once done. So that I could if i wanted to revert the doll to its original unmodded state.

Id be more prone to try that route.

    4. well unless you had money to burn and felt that it was necessary, I guess..but I know most of us really can't afford to just smash a doll to bits just so we can piece it back together...you'd never find all the pieces..and what would be the sense?
modding, scarring, tattooing, piercing..that's one thing..but to break a doll for just the sake of being able to do it...? that's just stupid.

    5. If the performance peice or sculpture object itself really needed a smashed doll, yes, I might. I do love broken dolls. They have a pathos you just can't get any other way. But at this point in my life and in my hobby, I can't imagine being able to bring myself to actually DO the deed. *L* I mean, theoretically I am the kind of artist who takes those sorts of risks... but in reality I am far too in love with BJDs to 'kill' them... not to mention the expense. *_*

    6. never! no no no

actually, it depends on how much i spent on the doll.

if its a barbie, then go ahead. if it is more than $100 then no

    7. I would, since my characters do have scars... but I'm just too much of a scaredy cat to do it. ^_^()

I don't really consider the scars as 'breaking', though. Changing, sure, but not breaking since everything still works and is in mostly one piece.

    8. *runs away crying*
      Why would people do that...J/K
      People have their reasons...

    9. Yes, I definately would if the sake of the sculpt's character. Still I don't think I would dare to make any extreme changes (horror/gore mods et c.) patly because I don't have and doubt I will ever have any dolls/characters in need of such changes, partly because I dont trust my own modding skills.

    10. I wish I was that creative. If I had a real vision I might commish someone to mod the doll for me, but otherwise I wouldn't do anything to my dolls.

    11. I don't think I would ever do a serious mod to a doll, unless that had been a big part of their character. I don't usually have characters with missing limbs/deep scars/holes in their head/etc, so I don't think I'd ever to anything permanent. XD

    12. Hmm . . . I would never "break a doll." but as for scaring and stuff, if it's part of the character I would definitely want to. . . although I think i would be too chicken to do anything that would be permanent . . . not because I think I would not want the scars, but what if I messed up?

    13. Well, yes, I would do o__o'
But only with a cheap head X'D

I have a DZ Mo head here at the moment. Poor head, with stains and so on...and I hate the Mo mold. That's why I can mod him without feeling bad in any way o__o

    14. Part of this hobby is the ability to modify a doll. Some modifications are more extreme then others. Is the doll 'broken' if you have reached the desired effect you want? In the case of extreme mods you have a chance of ruining the doll beyond repair, but that's part of the risk you are accepting when you do it. Some people are not comfortable with such a risk. Others don't have a doll/character/image that they want to reach that would require such mods.

I've sanded away the nose on one of my dolls, but it was required for the character. Is the doll broken...nope.

Now an interesting idea would be if your character was suppose to be all cracked and such, and as the first poster said you actually broke the doll and glued it back together to achieve the desired affect. I think this would be cool. Ofcourse alot of work and high degree of permanent damage occuring, when one could just paint the cracks or carve them then. But to each their own.

    15. Modify? ...Maybe I would....

      Break?

Um....to use the words "Break" and "Doll" in the same sentence/paragraph scares me. ...Heck, the word "Break" alone just scares me by itself.

No. Just no. I would never break a doll just for art. I think all things like dolls and other things like toys, cars, etc. should be loved and cared for. I just would feel so sad to see a doll broken just for artistic ways. (Unless it was an Elmo doll....but that's another story.... :P ) I'd just take it appart to make it look broken. ......But that still makes me feel sad too. (Oh you poor owners, with your poor little floating heads D: I feel sorry for you)

Anyway, I will not try and argue any further, if it's your doll, and you feel like breaking it for some sort of reason like this, go ahead if you must, I have no right to fight you. But just remember, as you break your doll, somewhere, a little bat girl cries...

... ^^;; Ha-ha-ha. The last part sounded so weird, I know, but it's true.

    16. For the sake of art, yes. I see these dolls as a form of art itself so if it's meant to be a broken doll in character, why not? ^^

On the other hand, I can't break a doll for the sake of just breaking it though. That would be pointless and be a meaningless waste imo.

    17. Hey, customization is customization. Even when it's hideous or distasteful. And that's what I like about these dolls. Otherwise I'd still love my barbies more.

    18. i wouldnt do anything to hurt a doll they are like family to me even real humans it would just feel wrong doing that to a doll i would probably cry if i did it

    19. Simply put, NO!

    20. nope!!! despite my icon nope!! if it was already broken maybe.

(the icon isnt mine, im trying to find who made it so i can tell them how much i love it!)
