Would anyone break a doll for the sake of "art?"

Aug 30, 2006

    1. No way @_@
There are way cheaper things I could break for the sake of "art" and still achieve whatever I was going for.

    2. Possibly,
I have a character who's pretty messed up, severe scarring and missing most of one of his arms, taken not at a joint where simply taking off the arm would work. If I were to decide to make this character into a doll then yea, the scarring and all would be necessary, however its not something I see myself doing in the near or distant future.

    3. Would I personally break a doll for the sake of art? No. But only because I'm not a visual/sculptural artist. However, I definitely think I could appreciate art that involved or hinged on a severely broken doll (I did browse through some of Hans Bellmer's work...really interesting stuff can be done with dolls, though with any mention of that artist comes the requisite "adult material" warning...).

Personally I don't think I could bring myself to do any modifications that involved cutting into the resin. I would have to send my dolls out, and the only character I've so far envisioned who has any kind of...anything, I think I would like to have painted in trompe l'oeil fashion (saw a very very good job of viscera in critique here a while back). So doing it with my own hands is definitely out--I just have such a strong desire to keep things intact--it was recently very difficult for me to cut into an old blouse to make doll clothes from, even though the blouse was utterly ruined with a huge iron hole in the back! But when other people do it, I find the results can be extremely beautiful or moving.

redastor, if ever you did bring this piece to life, I would love to see it over on condoll!

    4. I dont think I would "break" a doll for any thing, but alot of things people do I dont really see as breaking, I think of it more like modifacation.

My doll has broken, sort of. They eye hooks on her hands came undone, eaily fixable for the most part, but I didnt have the parts, so now shes got a niffty little arm cast that holds her hand in place wntil I can fix her. Its cute though, and some times I debate just leaving it on :XD:

    5. I've spent far too much money on my dolls to break them. :sweat

    6. "Break" it miself, No. Cause my "artistic skill" don't worth the cost.
Ask someone talented to do it, Yes if I have an idea I think will worth it.

    7. It's been very tempting to break fingers off my doll's spare hands, especially since some of the fingers have dents. If the doll is supposed to look seriously injured, I wouldn't mind taking a sharp object and hacking at it >3<; Safely of course. I wouldn't wanna ruin the doll too much.

    8. As a 3D artist, experienced sculptor, and colllector of damaged items for a piece I'm working on, my answer would be no. My Juli will be a work of art herself. If I wanted to do an art piece using a broken doll (which I may be doing), I would buy enough cheap doll bits to put it together enough to show it's a doll. Or if I got a whole body, it might be kind of neat to give it to my dog... But it would not ever be a doll I have an attachment to. When I get my Juli, the only face-up she'll have is the original. I might use little kid peel-off nailpolish on her, and maybe one day a tattoo, but that would be all for Juli. Scarring/other mods would be reserved for later dolls.

So, in short, I would use a broken doll for art, but I would not break a doll not purchaced cheaply for that specific purpose.

    9. I agree with this. If I was an artist who needed a broken doll to create a work, I absolutely would break it. But it would be one bought cheaply for that purpose (and hopefully one that was already accidentally broken), not one I was attached to.

    10. If it called for it, sure. I have a character that has a piece of glass stuck in his face, if I had a way to commission it and such I'd love to have someone put a piece of seaglass into his actual face. o.o"

I don't think breaking is quite the right term though. Breaking means it's not usable (at least in my definition) and in need of repair; modding is probably a better term.

    11. I love dolls more than the art so no, I wouldn't break one in order to take some amazing pictures. Actually, I don't care about taking pictures at all^^; I am more happy when I play with my dolls than when I post pics of them and hear that they are pretty/cool.

    12. Depending on the character, of course.
I wouldn't let there be any cracks though and I wouldn't break any parts, but I wouldn't mind doing scars an stuff. And I wouldn't really call it breaking, as long as there aren't any cracks, missing bits, etc.

    13. O.O oh dear me... i don't think i could ever bring myself to harm a doll.

    14. I don't think I could ever bring myself to break a doll into bits. These dolls are expensive and breaking a doll even for the sake of art would really would be a waste of the money I just invested in them.

Now as for mods to the doll, yes, I would do that and actually plan on adding a scar to my first girl b/c the character that the doll represents as a scar on her left forearm.

    15. no offence but thats messed up and abusive to dolls

    16. Sure, I wouldn't shatter the thing, but modding scars and injuries on it? Sure, that's not breaking it, just modifying it.
@sammisu; I don't see how it's abusive.. plus, they're dolls. It's not really "abusing them" if you scratch em up a bit. ._.

    17. i think i would if i ever got a doll and i wanted to do something special with it. its my money, my doll, my ideas, my work? :P if you get the idea. but i wouldn't buy a doll just to 'kill' it. they cost to much for that :P i think customizing them is nice to get that personal look :)

    18. I think that some dolls with burned faces, scars and so on can be really beautiful when it's part of their character. I mean, no one is perfect, right? Some owners has characters with scars, and want to make they doll exactly like their characters. So yes, I think that minor changements in the doll can be considered as art. May be not breaking the doll apart, literaly, but some scars and some little burns can be REALLY awesome. :)

    19. Although I've done extensive mods (drilling holes, cutting off fingers, taking away half a face, scars, etc.), I don't think I would break a doll. All my mods were done to "add" to a doll. To "enhance" them.

I can understand the artistic beauty of a broken doll. I've seen photo shoots with doll parts, so why not a broken doll? I'm just not "artsy" enough to want to do that myself. Aside from that, I fear that a broken doll that is glued together can't handle the strain of the elastic tension.

    20. I suppose I might break a doll If I have an image that I'd love to create in doll form. Lie for instance, I like how some porcelain dolls look when they are cracked all over. it give them an old antique and kind of creepy look. I like that, so if I ever wanted a bjd to look like that bad enough, I might actually break it.
