1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would anyone break a doll for the sake of "art?"

Aug 30, 2006

    1. well... dunno if this counts but... i "dismembered" my doll.
Haru, is a quadruple amputee, so i chop-chopped her arms and legs off. :)
guess this counts as my personal opionion.

    2. I wouldn't completely break the mold, but I thought the original poster meant 'break' in the sense of modifying. If it's modding she means, yes I would.

Cicero, my Sweet Dream Lucas, is a lefthanded illusionist with a pickpocket habbit. Long time ago, when he was still a beginner, he stole a wallet of a rich man in the presents of a sheriff, just to see if he could. It was a stupid risk and he got caught. As a punishment two fingers of his left hand were chopped off, so that everybody could see he was a convicted criminal.

This story and his nickname wouldn't make sense if Cis still had all of his fingers, so I chopped off the little pinky and ringfinger of his left hand. Because I did he truly is 'The Three Fingered Angel'.

    3. The most I will do is some eye modding in the future. Even then... most likely something really minor. I'm terrified of the idea of accidentally messing up major modifications.

    4. No, I never would. It would be like breaking my kid on purpose for the sake of "art". However, if they broke by mistake, I'd keep still keep them. I don't really think of dolls as art, though. I think of them more as friends. So that's probably why.

    5. Like anything else, I think it depends on the need to recreate (or create) a look as well as the skill level of the 'artist.' Anyone who has put time and a lot of money into the doll with the intention of creating a savaged or scarred look has set a value on the look of that doll. If they are secure enough in their own ability to create the look they're after I see nothing wrong with it. The unexpected -- not knowing exactly whether the breakage would work out the way it is envisioned -- is always apt to occur and so it is up to the skill level of the person not just to create a look, but to be able to work around a look they didn't bargain for. :)

    6. while I personally would not. there have been artists who have broken dolls to mod them. and as aweful as it sounds it is atually quite beautiful when done well.

    7. Just for art? No. But if you had a character with scars, or something, then maybe? You'd probably need to know know what you're doing, if you shatter it it would be horrible o.o

But mostly no. Not when it's that beautiful, and costs half a grand.

    8. No. I would not ever break any of my dolls on purpose, even if it were for art.

    9. Never, just couldn't do it.

    10. I might, but not for art. Again, like quite a few people have already mentioned, I probably would for this one character who wears prosthetics from above both knees on down. But knowing how lazy I can be, I would probably go for the easier route and just make separate lower legs that attach at the knee instead of cutting away half of his upper legs. Oh well. I'll just wait and see. :)

    11. than it is not "breaking". it is just customizing right?
just like make the sleep head become a normal head, i think.

    12. Well, there is one thing I plan to do--mod one of my BJDs to make a third eye (specifically, turn him into Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho and implant a Jagan...). Does that count?

    13. Personally, no. I would rather find a sculpt that I can enjoy with a nice faceup instead of modding something to suit my needs. But I also don't have characters that I'm looking to shell, so I might not be as picky as I'm not matching a specific style to begin with. To each their own; I don't like to do super intensive mods with drilling on my own dolls, but I can understand why others do it.

    14. Yes, but i dont really consider it breaking at that point :D if you meant like running it over for some weird modern art thing, then hell no.

    15. No, but I just don't enjoy the whole broken or gore that some people love. I respect their right to like it, but for myself, I just don't appreciate those type dolls
