Would you buy a doll sculpt with a controversial name?

May 29, 2015

1. Like this one? Yeah, got him on order.
Well, if it's just goofy like that dude, I don't care. But something really offensive ... I honestly can't say. I mean, there's a whole bunch of dolls with names that just sound wrong in English (the aforementioned Pupu and Kaka, plus poor RS Dong) but they don't think in English, do they? So I'm willing to cut them some slack. It helps that while I do think in English at times it's not my native language, so it's easier to ignore.

-What doll names have you found that you consider controversial?

Oof. I've sometimes wondered why companies go for names like Lucifer or Lilith, it feels like attention grabbing to me. But I'm not sure I'd even consider that controversial - I mean, this is 2015, not the Middle Ages. If anything I consider it somewhat childish. "Look, our new doll has an offensive name! Everyone get their knickers in a twist and we get the free publicity when everyone checks out the dolls everyone else is shouting about!" Yeah. No. I'm too old for that sh*t.
Then there's Fairyland's "Moe" line which I've gathered is an Anime reference I didn't get because I'm not into anime. So there's another reason for me to have found few names that might inspire controversy: Chances are that I have seen them but didn't get the potentially controversial reference.

-Would you buy a doll with a sculpt name that is controversial to other people?

Yep. I don't care about the sculpt name. I do usually post my dolls' sculpt names when I upload their pics because seeing a pic of a sculpt I like and not being able to find out who they are is a pet peeve of mine, but that's about all the attention the sculpt name is ever going to get. If it was something really bad (not that I could think of an example), I might just put the info somewhere people can find it if they actively look for it, but not slap it under every pic I upload.

-If you would buy it, did people react badly to the doll because of the sculpt name?
We shall see how my poor Granado Uranus gets treated :XD: (I do find that hilarious rather than offensive though. Mostly because they've tied it into his story, in which it is a nickname he picked for himself. Poor dude was probably the butt of every joke. :dohSCNR! Is this considered a bad reaction? If so, then yes. Yes, I fully expect people to react that way.)

-Would you keep the sculpt name of a controversial doll?

I wouldn't keep the sculpt name of any doll, period. (Unless it happened to be called like the character I'm shelling, chances of which are pretty much nil.) So, no.

-If you would not buy it, do you feel uncomfortable seeing the doll come up in conversation on the forum?

n/a.

-Do you think that dolls with controversial names are somehow "tainted" by their sculpt names? Either because people are less likely to buy them or because they make owners uncomfortable and they end up on the second hand market or something.
No idea, to be honest. I guess it could happen.

2. Sorry, those were supposed to be two separate statements. That I wouldn't accept a racist name, and separately the use of Adolf makes me raise my eyebrow. Of course I don't presume every Adolf is some variety of neo-nazi! Although I do think it's a brave naming choice. Though plenty of kids in my country are named Damien and similar, so it's not exclusive to that name.

3. In all honesty, from what I've seen, Eastern cultures don't necessarily have the same grasp of Western religions as those who participate in them do. (And the counterpoint is likewise true, that those who follow Western religions don't necessarily have the best grasp of the Eastern ones.) They likely haven't considered the connotations of the current English association. And yes, I do mean current--the name "Lucifer" literally means "Light Bringer" in Latin, and in Latin tradition was used as a name for Christ. (It was literature that associated it with Satan, not tradition.)

And truth be told, of all my dolls, the worst sculpt name I have is "You." It's impossible to search for "You" when looking for photos. At least for sculpts like "AAAAA" you're unlikely to get a return of literally every post on the forum. :sweat

As for the questions...

-What doll names have you found that you consider controversial?
I honestly haven't paid much attention, outside of the obvious case of Penis/Colin, because that's hilariously noticeable. For the rest... what's controversial in one language may be completely safe in another, and it's hard to cater to every single culture.

-Would you buy a doll with a sculpt name that is controversial to other people?
If I liked the sculpt, sure. I don't keep sculpt names, and the doll would ultimately take on a new name, so why worry about the sculpt name? (In fact, having read the existing replies to this thread, apparently I already have, as I do in fact have one of the DollPamm Lolis mentioned on the previous page, and I adore her.)

-If you would buy it, did people react badly to the doll because of the sculpt name?
Nope.

-Would you keep the sculpt name of a controversial doll?
I don't keep the sculpt names of any dolls.

-Do you think that dolls with controversial names are somehow "tainted" by their sculpt names? Either because people are less likely to buy them or because they make owners uncomfortable and they end up on the second hand market or something.
I personally don't think so, but I'm sure there's always someone who will be too offended by the name to ever buy the sculpt.

4. I rename them anyway so sculpt names don't bother me at all. I do chuckle at some though [emoji14]

5. Impldoll event doll Kuka's name means "pooping" in my language. I don't even have one, but the name combined with his expression always makes me laugh immaturely at the poor guy :/ Sorry, Impldoll Kuka owners.

6. I don't particularly care what a company names their dolls - it's very rare for me to even consider keeping that name, or at least tweaking it to fit what I had in mind. If they went down the route of using a word that's derogatory in anyway, then I may flick them a message and let them know what it means. English isn't exactly the strong point of these predominantly-Asian companies, and so in certain cases I'm willing to let that slide.

7. I agree with CloakedSchemer. I am completely put off by non-named sculpts or number sculpts or even worse numbers with letter sculps like V53. Ugh.. I can't ever remember that! People would ask me what my sculpt of my doll was and I'd have to go look it up! lol.

I always change the names of the dolls from their sculpt name. I do like when the sculpt name is easy to remember and not that hard to pronounce.

8. Absolutely. I'm going to change the name regardless. By the time the doll reaches me, I consider it stripped of its factory identity.

9. I would want the doll if it's aesthetically pleasing to be. I don't care about the names at all, if I don't like it I knew I'm free to change it.

10. -What doll names have you found that you consider controversial?
I remember the P*nis doll... I just thought it was funny! Some names I think are odd, but I really don't care about the sculpt names and haven't really had a problem with any of them because of that.

-Would you buy a doll with a sculpt name that is controversial to other people?
As I said--I don't care about sculpt names. And really, I don't care what other people think! My dolls, not theirs, after all!

-If you would buy it, did people react badly to the doll because of the sculpt name?
I don't care about what other people think about my dolls... or any dolls, actually.

-Would you keep the sculpt name of a controversial doll?
Sculpt names aren't important to me. I only use them to refer to the dolls in case people want to identify them. But I don't care about the names.

-If you would not buy it, do you feel uncomfortable seeing the doll come up in conversation on the forum?
No.

-Do you think that dolls with controversial names are somehow "tainted" by their sculpt names? Either because people are less likely to buy them or because they make owners uncomfortable and they end up on the second hand market or something.
No.

11. -What doll names have you found that you consider controversial?
None.
-Would you buy a doll with a sculpt name that is controversial to other people?
Yes. I don't pay any attention to what other people think.
-Would you keep the sculpt name of a controversial doll?
No, I always give dolls new names
-If you would not buy it, do you feel uncomfortable seeing the doll come up in conversation on the forum?
No.
-Do you think that dolls with controversial names are somehow "tainted" by their sculpt names? Either because people are less likely to buy them or because they make owners uncomfortable and they end up on the second hand market or something.
No.

12. It does not bother me what the name is. I have a Delf Succubus Clary which I bought nude and the theme is one that some folks might not like. But I did not care what theme/name Luts gave her.

13. Based on the things I've read on this thread I think that "controversial" is something that changes depending on the culture of each person.

For example, I don't understand why some persons don't even dare to write "Penis" to reference that little doll with unfortunate name and instead use "p*nis" (as if it was a bad word... Is just a word to designate a body part! Why people think is "bad"?). The name "Adolf" was also mentioned as something that could make someone uncomfortable, however as another user mentioned is just a common name that not necessarily references Hitler.

Because the companies are Asian they don't have the same cultural baggage that we have, so they don't grasp the cultural "weight" that names such as Satan or Lucifer have here on the west.

And now addressing the question, Yes I would buy a doll with a "controversial " name if I like the sculpt. I don't mind bad words or awkward terms. Maybe I wouldn't buy a doll with a slur as a name. Though I understand Asian companies don't have the same points of view and culture as we western people that doesn't justify that they don't do a good research before naming their products specially taking in account the fact that they are companies that sell worldwide. I don't expect them to make a research in all languages, but at least in English would be good.

14. -What doll names have you found that you consider controversial?
None that I would really label as controversial, but there are indeed some funny names, like Dong or Soa (means STD in Dutch).
-Would you buy a doll with a sculpt name that is controversial to other people?
Depends on wether or not I find it truly controversial. Some names are simply a bit unfortunate, but I haven't come across anything that would be offensive, like an insult.
-Would you keep the sculpt name of a controversial doll?
No, not likely, I tend to rename my dolls anyway.
-If you would not buy it, do you feel uncomfortable seeing the doll come up in conversation on the forum?
Really depends on what the sculpt name would be. Currently, no.
-Do you think that dolls with controversial names are somehow "tainted" by their sculpt names? Either because people are less likely to buy them or because they make owners uncomfortable and they end up on the second hand market or something.
Perhaps that would be a consequence.

Edit: Hopeless, I think people are hesitant to type "penis" because on some forums it is a censored word. ^.^

15. I'm not at all bothered by doll names from the companies. Like some mentioned I will usually rename my dolls, the only exception was my Kai, but that's because I like that name and it fit the character I wanted for my doll. Though admittedly I would be more interested in buying a doll with an odd name just four the sake of being able to tell people the sculpt name...especially non doll friends. I'd love to tell them that my Penis is coming in the mail! Especially since he's an adorable scorpion boy!

16. I would be a little less inclined to buy a sculpt with a name that had historical baggage associated with it, such as Adolf, because you'd be amazed how often you have to dodge accusations of being a neo-Nazi when you're trying to talk about 19th century German castles. On the other hand, I see no problem with companies using mythological name scheme, be they Christian or Pagan gods. Sometimes, though, I think that companies should do a little more research, especially if the name has an unwanted meaning in English.

On the other hand, if there was a company that named all of their sculpts after members of the Nazi party... Well, then we might have a problem.

17. I haven't seen any sculpt names that I would consider controversial. Just misguided or humorous. But to answer the question hypothetically... If I thought a sculpt name was truly offensive -- for instance if it advocated hate crimes or animal abuse or something like that-- I wouldn't buy the sculpt because I wouldn't like the mindset of a company who would create a name like that. And it would make me feel uncomfortable to see the sculpt name on the forum, because of the bad associations. Fortunately all that is hypothetical! :)

18. -What doll names have you found that you consider controversial?
I don't know about controversial - just unfortunate. Nobody's mentioned the doll named Rubber. I think he's a Dikadoll? Not controversial, but still makes me laugh when I think about it. I don't think an unfortunate name would keep me from buying a doll if I loved the sculpt, unless it was well and truly offensive and fairly obviously intentional. As for numbered dolls, I only have two. One is the 13th in the series, and the other is the 4th. That alone would stop some people from buying them, but it didn't bother me.

19. But . . . Lucifer is Satan. I don't understand why you can accept one but deny the other, seeing as they are both the same being. I'm seriously curious by the way; I'm not trying to be a jerk.

20. If I really liked the sculpt I would still buy it. But I don't find Lucifer to be offensive. I actually have a doll on my wish list that I want to portray as Lucifer so.. yeah.
