1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you buy a second hand doll for same price as a new one?

Jul 3, 2013

    1. Depends on the company and on if it's limited or not. For limiteds that I REALLY want, then hell yes. I'd even pay more than the original price for some. And if the company is notorious for crazy wait times, like Doll Chateau, I would rather buy second hand if the doll is in really good condition.

    2. maybe, but just if the item is out of stock in other parts, site, pages etc, i can pay -%15 than the original cost, for me is the best price. (bus just if the bjd its not so old)

    3. It depends on the company, and the condition of the doll. If the doll can be easily purchased from the company, the only thing that would make me buy it for the same price as from the company would be if it was in like new condition.

If it could not be obtained anymore, I would be willing to overlook yellowing and scratches or stains, and would sometimes pay even more than the price of buying from the company, with a few exceptions.

Companies like Soom have free choice events and post MD events, to give customers a second chance at buying dolls they missed the first time. I will not pay double the price of a doll that hasn't had its rerelease period yet, because I know I can still get one for much, much less, later.

    4. I think it really depends on the sculpt, company and condition of the doll.

    5. NO!
Not if it's a doll I can still buy brand new elsewhere.
When it comes to saving money I'd sooner wait to get the doll brand new directly from the co. or dealer and know that "I" am the first owner.

    6. If it's a limited sculpt that you can never get anymore or a relatively new doll with an awesome face up, then of course. Otherwise, I don't see much point. Receiving a brand new doll in a brand new company box is part of the enjoyment for me.

    7. I think it depends on the company and how free you can buy the same doll. That is,if there are restrictions on its purchase, then maybe .

    8. I would reconsider how old the doll is. If it's relatively new then maybe. If the doll is still available for purchase through the company then probably not. If it's limited, then yes.

    9. I actually paid full price for my second hand Doll Chateau Bella. The seller was from the united states and said they'd owned the doll for about six months but it just sat in the box the entire time. They actually were taking offers on the doll but i just decided to pay the full price, i don't think for any reason in particular...

Granted... looking back I'd probably want to to a 'best offer' and maybe shave $50 or so off the price. So I guess that's my plan for the future :)

    10. yes someones ask too much for a used doll. its not fair at all. it should be 30% off at least

    11. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
It would depend on what condition the doll is in, if the doll comes with papers and such. It also depends also on the shipping cost and how soon I would get the doll. I may pay the same price, if I were wanting to get a specific doll at a sooner time. I may pay the same price or a little more if the doll is no longer in production or a limited release.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
Again, depends on papers and shipping. 80%-90% I think would be a fair price for preowned, more for limited or dolls no longer in production in really good condition.

I haven't been in the hobby for long so it may be interesting to see what I think later down the road.

    12. totally agree with Hitodama... it depends alway on what condition the doll is in ! However, if it's in good condition, I would pay the same just for have it sooner then if I order it... I would prefer a layaway, anyway.

    13. If the doll is my grail and it's discontinued, I will be more than happy to buy it for the same price secondhand.

    14. I would for a limited edition I really wanted. I might buy something less limited if the doll was in my hands and I loved it as is.

I wouldn't mind the doll being a bit more expensive either because of the costs the seller incurred to have it in the first place. I wouldn't expect them to take a loss. But, the odds of me deciding I need a new doll right there and then are pretty slim and paying more instead of waiting doesn't appeal to me either. So, while I think the seller may be justified with that price, if they can't find a buyer then reducing the price is the only option available to them. Basically, I don't blame them for trying.

    15. Would I pay full price for a second hand doll? Well... On the one hand, if the person just got the doll and is reselling it the minute she opened the box, why wouldn't I just buy one from the company? But on the other hand, if this person wants the original price but is in the US so shipping would be cheaper, and she offered layaway, I'd consider it. I would want to know why this person ordered a doll and decided to sell it the same day she received it. Just for my curiosity. There are people online who buy a bunch of dolls, send them off for amazing face ups, then resell them once they're bored with them for more than the original price to cover the customs fees and face ups. If you're looking for a specific doll with a face up by a popular artist, that might be worth it.

My favorite dolls have been discontinued for the most part. I am willing to pay more than the original price for yellowed dolls with normal wear and tear to get my grails (which I have done) and since I'm a collector-minded person, when a really rare discontinued doll from Cerberus Project comes up on the MP, even if I'd never considered it before, I'm all over it. And I'll definitely pay more than the original if it's a limited doll, even without the fullset.

Part of the reason that I like buying second hand is that people often offer layaway. I'm terrible at saving money. I bought my Minifee through Denver Doll so I could put her on layaway. Layaway is the key for me!

    16. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Only if it's a very new/in good condition doll and/or is limited. If not, I'll just go to the company.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If the original doll is $300 and they're selling it for $290, I wouldn't go for it. Not worth it, probably. If it was closer to $260 or $250, I'd consider it.

    17. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Certainly if I was saving on shipping and avoiding waiting, say, a year (looking at Dollshe here). I in fact DID buy a Hound for those reasons. In fact about half my dolls are 'second hand' because with THESE dolls that really doesn't automatically mean anything. The dolls I bought on the MP almost all came in original boxes w/certificates etc - certainly ALL of the ones I bought close to original price did. I also bought a Volks Ryoma for the same price as those lucky lottery winners, but ended up paying less than I would have if I had won that lottery - cause shipping from California is cheaper than from Japan. AND he came mint in the box, nothing opened, all the full-set items still in their plastic. Really no down-side there. Oh, and how ELSE was I going to get him?

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If me buying the doll at the original price saved me $60 in shipping and months in transit, NO problem.

    18. It definitely depends... I have the same policy about all new things: if I can get it brand new for the same price (or close to the same price) as someone is selling it used, I won't buy the used version just to save literally a couple dollars. The only time I would make an exception is if that thing is no longer available or rare... Even then though, I cringe when I have to buy used things (dolls or otherwise) that are more expensive than the original.

    19. I think if a doll is in near mint condition and is in the US ready to ship.. I would probably pay near new price for it. Especially if it has the company face up (if I liked it) or had a better faceup. For me, it would be worth it to receive it faster and at a better shipping price.

    20. There's a few factors here to consider for me. First off condition. I also would like the coa. The box in most cases isn't that important. Also are there goodies coming with that I can use in my own plans for the doll? If all of these were met, then yeah.
