1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you buy a second hand doll for same price as a new one?

Jul 3, 2013

    1. 1. If it was my grail doll yes. I'd will even go as far as saying I'd pay twice or triple it's original price. But if it were any other doll it would depend on how much I wanted the doll and how long the original owner had him/her for.

      2. Depends on the condition of the doll. If it's yellowed or broken or chipped I probably wouldn't buy it if it was to close to it's original price.

    2. Possibly. If it were for sale in the US, it would mean not having to pay the high shipping fees from Asia, plus I would not have to wait nearly as long to get the doll. However, if I am going to do that, I would expect the doll to be in excellent condition.

    3. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

No, though I have been surprised to see such things offered for very near that price. I figure that people may pay that to save on overseas shipping and the long wait times but I would rather buy new. That way I’m sure of the condition. For an LE doll that I wanted then it’s really about what the market will bear and I would likely pay more.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

To really get the hook in me it would have to be 30-40% off new. But again, if the market will bear more and people pay it then good for them.

    4. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

If it is in mint condition I would buy it, because I will skip the waiting time for the direct order to the company. I would buy a doll that has one or two weeks maximum with its actual owner.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

I would say a 70-90% the company price depending in factors like time, face-up, extras, scratches. But, like I said before, If it is brand new, I would pay a 100%

    5. I understood that the doll, in the situation you are presenting, would be available for purchase in the company at the same time someone were selling it for the same price.

      1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

No. The only situation I can imagine buying a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one, would be if it had never been opened, but when does that happen? And then, I would probably prefer to buy it directly from the company anyway, instead of risk buying from someone in the marketplace.
Also, if I really wanted the doll and the company didn't offer layaway, but the seller did, for example. But I would only do this if I were so in love with that exact doll, I had to have it right away instead of waiting until I saved the necessary amount to purchase a new one. And still, I would only consider buying said doll if it were in new condition - meaning, the doll could have been taken out of the box, perhaps; but not for long. It would have to be in the exact same condition as it was when it first arrived.
So, the chances of those conditions being fulfilled are so slim, I don't think it could really happen.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

      It depends on many factors.

    6. No, I wouldn't pay the same price for a second-hand doll and a brand new one. As others have said, there are many factors to consider--especially the availability of the sculpt, the doll's condition, whether it has a custom face-up or comes with extras, the expected wait times were you to buy from the company... how badly you want that doll.

... but when I buy secondhand, I look at it as trading off condition to cut some off the price. Waiting times do not faze me all that much and I feel far less nervous about the entire shipping process, and possible damage during transit, when buying from the company. If the prices are going to be comparable, even if the condition is also comparable, I'm going to buy from the company.

    7. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

Yes because I really wanted the sculpt and it was a limited run and no longer available.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

I cannot specify an exact amount as it would depend on how much I wanted that doll, how readily available that doll is and if it came with extras like cloths etc...

    8. I would never buy one for the same price. Might as well get a fresh new one!

    9. i would buy it if the face really "clicks" with me and if its still in good condition and not available anywhere else on the market : )

    10. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll? I would consider it for a special doll (e.g. a limited or a fullset) or for a doll in perfect/mint condition (no yellowing, no staining, no chipping, good-quality faceup, etc). But generally speaking, no. If I'm going to buy a secondhand doll, part of the reason for that will be to pay a lower price than I would for a new doll.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I would still like to see a markdown, maybe somewhere in the 5-10% range (so a doll that was $600 brand new would be $540-570 secondhand). But I'll admit that I prefer not to buy secondhand at all so I'm probably biased because of that. Basically, for me, a doll that wasn't a sold-out limited would have to be in excellent condition AND would have to have a fairly large markdown before I would consider buying secondhand instead of buying direct from the company. I feel like it's very easy to acquire a brand-new, flawless, non-limited doll directly from companies or from dealers, so why would I pay close to the original price (e.g. within $10-20 of original price) for a doll that wasn't brand new (and had therefore already started to yellow or may have other flaws) when I can pay a little extra and get the doll new and right from the company?

    11. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Only if it was a limited and in good condition (no damage to the resin).

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I'd pay the same amount if it was a limited, if the doll was still readily available from the company I'd expect the price to be at least £20 cheaper than a new doll.

    12. I love purchasing dolls second-hand because I know there won't be much waiting involved aside from shipping. I would pay very close to the company price.

    13. I guess if the doll was unavailable anywhere else, then yes. I would buy it with the same price as the new one.

    14. i bought my doll more pricey.....i dont regret. coz i hate waiting....

    15. If its brand new mint or limited maybe but dolls that are damaged no. I consider extreme face up to be damage since it takes tons of work to restore it back to blank customizable condition. I find it a little ridiculous when people expect full price for color stained, heavily modded, carved or chipped pieces.

    16. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
It would depend if it was one I really really wanted right away and didn't want to wait.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If it was a limited edition I could no longer obtain I would definitely pay original price if it was in good condition.

    17. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If it was under 6 months old, yes! I love buying preowned dolls. There's a shorter wait time, and you don't have to worry that the company made any errors. (This is assuming you buy from a reputable seller who would disclose any problems with the doll.) Also, you get to see the exact doll you're getting. I've ordered dolls from the company with face-ups that didn't look anything like the promo pictures or like previous owner pics. For companies with quality control problems, I feel more confident buying preowned.

If the doll was over a year old, then I'd be less likely to pay full price unless the doll was no longer available from the company.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If it was in mint condition, I'd pay a bit over the original price. I posted a WTB in the past for a body and had a price that was higher than the company price. No one responded to the WTB, and I gave up and ordered from the company after a few weeks, but I would have happily paid a bit more to get it faster. I was very anxious to see if the hybrid I'd planned would work. That particular company had somewhat long wait times, though. For a company with short wait times, I would't pay more than the original price + shipping to me. I hate long wait times because I worry that something will go wrong. With a short wait time, there's less time spent worrying. (I've had things go wrong in the past, so I'm a bit paranoid.)

    18. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Only if the buyer just received it, never painted it, never did anything other than maybe check the condition and then put it back on the market and it was less than 3 months old.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I'd pay the original price of the doll (but not for the shipping or custom fees they had to pay) if it had the conditions above.

I buy all of my dolls company direct and don't mind the wait. I'm lucky enough to buy the dolls I really really want when I want. So if I pass on a doll - I'm not willing to dig deeper into savings for them. So with that said - it would be a rare moment when I would buy second hand and if so, would only pay up to what I would have paid originally. I wouldn't pass on a doll I needed to have and then pay more for it.

I might consider paying a bit more for a mint doll that was limited.

    19. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If the doll was in good condition and was in the UK/EU then yes, I would. It saves me having to pay stupid amounts for shipping and the risk of having to pay customs charges. It also saves me having to wait for ages to get it. Plus, I find pleasure in knowing that I'm giving an unloved doll a new home :) Three out of my four dolls were secondhand purchases and none of them were very far from the original price.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
It depends on the condition. As I've already said, it's in good condition and in the UK/EU I would pay full price. I don't buy dolls at all that aren't in reasonable condition, but if the doll was further away I would be looking for a better deal, enough to make it worth me paying the extra for shipping.

The exception to all of this, of course, is limited dolls. I've never yet been interested in a limited doll, but if I did happen to want one, I would expect to pay more the the original price second hand. That's just how it goes.

    20. I originally had trouble parsing the thread title, because I mostly buy Limited Edition dolls, so my first thought was "of course I'd pay original price for them secondhand! That would be awesome compared to the huge mark-ups I'm used to!" :XD:

For me, I wouldn't buy a doll secondhand for full price if it was still available from the company. I prefer being the first owner, just for the added security of knowing there are no flaws with the doll (or that, if there are, I can contact the company for replacement parts). You never know whether another person's standards are the same as your own. 'No yellowing', for example, can actually mean 'some yellowing, but even enough that I haven't noticed it" to some secondhand sellers. Some sellers won't have checked their doll all over before selling it, and so might not have noticed minor face-up damage or cracks in the resin.

If I was buying a currently-available doll secondhand, I'd want at least a 25% discount off the full price. Otherwise, I'd prefer to save the money for the LEs I want, since I tend to chase LEs over standard releases.
