It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you buy a second hand doll for same price as a new one?

Jul 3, 2013

    1. I wouldn't buy a second hand doll for the exact same price as official site unless it's brand new, no home faceup and just never touched upon
i will also not buy a second hand if price include shipping to the first owner which i see a lot cause in my mind that one should at least take the shipping money for it's their fault for making rash decisions

for a good condition second hand i'd expect at least 50 dollars of difference I'd say, i mean no matter how "good condition" it is, there's gonna be mark of handling, loose strings, an old faceup, possible old faceup residue that doesn't show up until i remove the faceup.... etc. I'd perfer to have second hand bodies and buy a new head since I don't mind there being handling marks on the body i can easily take care of that, but on the face? no I'd rather have a new head + second hand body

    2. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
No, Not unless it was OOP, or just generally very very rare, If I can get hold of it new for the same price, why would I? I feel some people forget that when selling dolls.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If it was really close to new, then at least $50 odd off from the orginal price, maybe more off depending what someone would consider "good" condition.

    3. It depends on condition, availability, shipping costs. Also I would prefer a secondhand doll if I knew that pre-order periods in company are very long.

    4. It depends. There are many factors for me.
The age of the secondhand doll, the condition, if it's limited, and basically just how much I want the sculpt all determines how much I am willing to spend.
If it is a doll that isn't too old, that is a sculpt I really love and want, well taken care of, and if I can't get it from the company anymore then I would most likely be willing to pay original price, maybe even a bit more if I HAVE to just to ensure I get it. The not having to wait 2+ months for it to arrive is almost worth it to me. But if I can get it for less then I definitely will.

If I feel like it is a rip off though I won't go for it. If the doll is 5 years old, yellowed/ marked up and a common sculpt that I want but not desperately then I would rather buy it from the company and get a brand new one.

    5. As long as it looks brand new with no yellowing and has nothing absolutely nothing wrong with it, like scratches and such.

    6. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Short answer - yes. I've noticed this isn't really a hobby where something plummets in value once it "leaves the lot," in a manner of speaking. My last two doll purchases weren't limiteds strictly speaking, but they're only offered periodically and when I purchased them there was no telling how long I might have had to wait for the company to sell them again. I would also be willing to pay original price for a secondhand item in like-new condition if it was coming from a company known for long wait times, or if I really liked a custom faceup.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
For a like-new unlimited item I might be willing to pay the original price, so long as I was only adding on shipping from the seller's location to myself after that. Price of the item + shipping to seller + shipping to myself would be too much, if this was a standard doll that I could get direct from the company in a reasonable time frame.

    7. I hate waiting times, so I'd actually pay a bit extra to get a like new unlimited doll within a week. I'm probably in a minority but I don't care. If the doll has any yellowing, damages, etc, I wouldn't pay full price unless the doll was very limited. For limited sculpts, I think the overall value keeps going up the longer they've been discontinued.

    8. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

I think a big factor is wait time and shipping costs... Like if I'm being given the choice between a blank doll secondhand that's still in good to near-perfect condition vs. a blank doll straight from the company, and the doll itself is the same price but there's the difference between $40 shipping from overseas and let's say $15-20 shipping somewhere closer, then the better choice in terms of money would be the cheaper shipping of course... plus it'd arrive a lot faster. But of course when buying from the company you can be sure it's not a recast or anything and there's more confidence in it being in good condition and not getting ripped off... So it probably depends.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

If it was still in good enough condition I'd probably be willing to spend pretty close... If it was near perfect, like opened-one-time-to-look-over-it quality, then I'd be willing to pay the full original price if the seller was nearby thus making for cheaper shipping and fast arrival.

Of course, it's a different case for dolls that can ONLY be found on the marketplace, because then, what can you do... at that point the owner market is in control of prices since buyers can't just go buy one from the company if they don't like the options/prices they're presented with in the mp.

    9. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Actually, many times I have paid for a 2nd-nad doll way, way more than the original price. This considers limiteds, which due to their unavailability over time naturally grow in value.
I accept that process and I deal the same way when selling a limited doll myself.

So, basically, my answer is dependant on what kind of doll it is. Because if it's a basic doll offer, available non-stop through the store I would problaly be hesitant. However, there's always the luxury of having a doll shipped immediately from previous owner, where for a new one, I'd have to wait much longer. I have met sellers who claim this fast-availability to be a valuable feature of their offer therefore they expedted the store price or even more. I can't beat that, although it also depends on doll's condition. Sometimes it would be really impudent to expect a like-new doll price for a weak condition one.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I suppose I replied to this question above. It depends on doll's condition but I would probably try to lower the price nonetheless for the sole fact "used" doll will never be like new one. Unless someone is selling a doll right after it's arrival home. Then I would accept the original price without any discussion. This would in fact be my pleasure, since I wouldn't have to wait the production period and still get a new doll!

    10. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

I probably would, if it was a mold I really wanted, or a limited doll I'd been dying to get and the company wouldn't make it anymore.

    11. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Like many others have said, it depends on the doll...but I honestly see a LOT of basic dolls (especially FL) on the marketplace for the same price or way more expensive and I feel like that's utterly ridiculous. Even if it has a custom face up on it, you shouldn't be charging what you paid for the doll full price as well as what you paid for the face up full price. Regardless, it's a used doll. I will gladly wait months for the doll to arrive before I purchase second hand for the same price.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

Good condition? I'd want at LEAST 50 off, and that doesn't include shipping...I've noticed a lot of people include what they paid for EMS shipping into the price of the doll but I don't really think that's fair. If it's been modded or has any imperfections due to wear and tear, I'd want more.

If it's like new (as in they took it out of the box and decided they didn't like it, then put it straight back), I'd probably pay full price for the doll...NOT including what they paid for EMS shipping. I mean we don't do that with other things that we resell..."Okay so I paid 20 for this plus 20 shipping so I'm gonna charge 40" No you're not, you stop it right now. >:0

This is why I just buy new dolls straight from dealers...XD

    12. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
-That would depend. If the doll was in perfect condition I don't see why not. But if there was some damage to the doll or yellowing probably not.
It seems like a lot of people try to sell their dolls for more then what a brand new one would cost. And I don't see why. Unless it were to come with a lot of extras. o_O

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
-Like I said, if it was in good condition and they were selling it for the same price as a new one I wouldn't mind buying it.
Even if it was a little over I wouldn't mind as if they were in the US shipping would be cheaper.

    13. I think if the doll was a limited and in good condition then I probably would pay the original price for it, though if it was a normal basic doll that I could easily order from the company or a dealer then I wouldn't see the point. With how close to the original price I would be willing to spend I'm not sure, what exactly is 'good condition' can vary on a person's opinion, but also it depends on how badly I wanted it.

    14. Yes, I wouldn't mind paying the same amount...especially for limited or if you're getting something extra like a faceup.
I get a little put off when people charge more than the original price, but then again, I quite like that people put value on an aspect of a doll that makes it a bit more special.

    15. I would buy it if it was limited addition and sold out. How else would I get the doll then? Otherwise, no, I don't think so.

    16. Yes, if it was relatively newer and came with maybe some extras? And by New I mean made within the past 3 months.. I've seen some on the MP/offsite for more than the original price with nothing included.

If it came with a little extra I would pay the same price, this is a second hand doll. I really don't care for people who add that "instant gratification" fee on there because they know people don't wanna wait generally. Especially when its over $100 for a doll they got last year that's not limited.

    17. If the doll has a custom face up and/or modding i think i would pay the same amount,
As well as it coming with some extras.

    18. I would not buy a second hand doll unless it was only available second hand (limited or long sold out) or was significantly cheaper than buying from the company.

The doll I'd like to buy is being sold on the mp at the moment by a few different sellers but they are a year old and only about $50 cheaper than from the company. So, even though it will take longer for me to save up and wait for the doll I plan to buy from the company directly.

I also don't think that adding extras with the doll would make me more likely to buy it because they are unlikely to be things I would choose to buy myself.

    19. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If the doll isn't LE or discontinued or sold out, I won't buy. I prefer to order it directly from the company, although have to wait a bit longer but new doll is new doll. It surely has some difference between old one and new one. But if it's cheaper, I may consider. (but for too cheap price...then I will be really cautious)

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
It depends on which doll, conditions and shipping fee. If its condition is too bad like very yellowed, damaged, etc, I will definitely not buy it, even though it's much much cheaper.

    20. If it was in pristine condition with papers and box, or had a really nice faceup, or was no longer available, yes, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I can't help but think the wait time kills a bit of the excitement for me. If I could pay the same and get it faster, I would.

If it was badly yellowed or cracked, or in any sort of bad condition, not a snow balls chance in hell.
