Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Would you buy a second hand doll for same price as a new one?

Jul 3, 2013

    1. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If it's a basic doll that I can purchase on the company website, then no. If it had a really amazing faceup, I might pay close to the original price. If it's a limited doll, well, I've paid more than they were originally sold for which is to be expected with certain sculpts.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If the doll is in 'good' condition and it's a standard doll I would expect there to be a reduction in price and the original shipping from the company to the first owner not be included in that price. I don't mind waiting 3 months for a brand-new doll, so if the price is the same I'll just buy the new doll.

    2. Personally, seeing as many LEs or rare dolls are even more expensive than the original price, I'd pay the full price or even more, if I think it's worth it (being in very good condition, having a face-up I like or coming with extras like eyes, wigs or stuff like that).

    3. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

This question actually applies to me recently. I paid MORE for a secondhand doll than it was new because she was assembled and with a faceup and stuff (which is not how the dolls were originally sold). Additionally, the doll was only available in a lottery so there's that.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

I would pay the original price if they were in a like new condition or if it was an extremely rare doll.
If it is something you can get standard from the company I wouldn't pay the original price on a secondhand doll.

    4. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Absolutely - IF the seller was in my own country, and the shipping was therefore a ton cheaper. Nothing rings my bell like the lure of cheap or free shipping! I don't mind paying retail or close to it if I was planning to do so anyway by buying direct or through a dealer, but the doll would need to be pristine and pretty close to brand new unless it was something LE, rare or difficult to find. Also, the benefit of no sales tax! In a way, I'd also be looking at all of these factors as paying for semi-instant gratification (as well as privacy: buying in-country that way also means the EMS form isn't going to declare I'M BUYING TOYS LOL, because the mailman already gives me that super judgey look every time I have to sign for foreign packages that have...really descriptive item contents listed on the label, haha.)

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
Again, depends on the availability. If I can't get that particular sculpt anywhere else, I would probably be willing to go well over original cost if I wanted a doll badly enough. A spectacular faceup or other included goodies might also influence me, if I see something particularly striking.

    5. Practically every doll I have that I am not the first owner of cost more than the original cost of the doll from the factory. In some cases twice as much if I really really want it and it is no longer in production.

    6. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Yes I would do that, but the doll has to be in mint condition.
But I like to buy them from the company. No offense to anyone, but I am very cautious when buying something this expensive from another person. And shipping is always tricky.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
"good" condition is a flexible term
If the doll is in mint condition, no alterations, no obvious yellowing or things like that, I would pay the original price. Especially when it concerns a LE or discontinued sculpt. And when it comes to LE's, maybe a bit more.
But I am not paying extra for certain things like custom face up's, 9 out of 10 it will come off anyway. It was their investment in that doll, not mine.
If the doll had alterations, yellowing or other damage that would lower the price for me. But that would depend on the total of said mods or damage.

    7. Of course, that is the way the market has always been/is.

    8. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

I would be happy to adopt a doll from a previous owner, but it would depend on a few things. Most importantly, naturally, the condition of the pre-owned doll. Whether it has yellowed, and how much/how evenly. I wouldn't think it's fair to price it exactly as a brand new one if it has yellowed a lot. Another lesser consideration would be the type of doll, i.e. whether it is LE (probably not?), or a period sale doll, or if I could just as easily order it directly from the company. If it's the former two, which makes it relatively harder to obtain, I would be more likely to purchase it.

If it had a pretty face-up not done by the company, or came with extras, that would be an even greater incentive!

Of course, one obvious perk to adopting a doll (assuming it's brand new or like new), even if it's available for order, would be that the waiting time would be greatly cut short! And that is always good.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

Depends on what 'good' means. If it's as good as new (i.e. taken out of box once or twice, or never), I wouldn't think twice about getting it even if it was priced at the exact same price that it was purchased for. If it has been played with for a short period of time, with slight but even yellowing, I would be willing to purchase it (doll only, assuming without custom face-ups and extras) at a 5-10% (or more) price difference.

    9. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

Only if it's a limited edition. Otherwise no. I would rather wait and have a new doll from the company.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

Depends on how well I like it. The better the condition and what all it comes with would determine how much I would willing pay for a second hand doll.

    10. Of course I would. It depends a little on the company, but not having to wait months and fork over shipping from Asia is a big draw to the second hand market. I'm perfectly willing to pay for instant gratification.

    11. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

I have before but I probably won't do it again. When I purchased my 2nd second hand doll the owner was very upset that I offered the original price of the doll because they put "so much time into her" which I didn't really see. No fancy face up and she wasn't a very expensive doll to begin with. They also told me I wasn't allowed to change her look after I handed the money to them? Weird. I didn't get a box or anything but the doll itself. I'm glad I have her but I'm slightly irritated because I could have just bought a new doll without all the fussing and guilt. While I was at the meet there were several people selling very yellowed or broken dolls (hands feet and ears) that you can still purchase directly from the doll company and were asking the selling price or even more to recoup the shipping. I didn't say anything because that's their doll but I felt like they were kind of a rip off. If I did buy them I would have to somehow get the company to sell me those pieces to fix the doll. Why do that when I could just buy it from the company and actually save money?

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

If I ever buy second hand again... Which after my past two experiences I will probably not do (but maybe) they will have to discount them quite a bit if they are older. If they are brand spankin new and they have all the options I want then I might pay the price as long as they didn't try to recoup their faceups or shipping. (I hope that doesn't make me sound mean).

    12. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

Depends. If I'm considering the difference in shipping costs, I'd expect that to be pre-factored in, so if I could buy a doll at $500 after shipping and you're selling at $500 before, I'd pass.
But it also depends on how desperate I am to have the doll ~right now~ instead of waiting the 3-6 months for production time.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

If the doll was like-new and contained papers and had, at the least, the default inclusions the company would give (typically eyes and wig), I'll pay the full normal price.
Take eyes away, deduct $12. Take wig away deduct $30.
Add scratches, deduct $10-30 depending on how bad
Terrible faceup and staining would decrease the price for me as well.

      Those're my second-hand rules :)

    13. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If the doll was a limited/rare sculpt that can no longer be bought via the original company, yes.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I would say as cheap as possible lol but it also depends on a few other factors such as:
      a. How badly I want the sculpt
      b. How often does it appear in the marketplace
      c. How my wallet is feeling

    14. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Only for a limited, no longer available doll in perfect condition! Even with extra shipping, if the new doll is still available it seems silly to buy used at the same price, unless you want immediate gratification :).

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
Based on market saturation and condition, I guess? This one seems like more of a case-by-case question.

    15. Depends on how much I want it and how easy is to find another one on sale. @_@

    16. It depends if I could find it elsewhere.

    17. If the doll is still in good condition, or has been treated such as face up, body blush, and moldline removal, i don't mind buying 2nd hand doll with the same price on web
I dont need to wait, and i got free face up and body blush
Sometimes when you buy in the same country, you save shipping cost too...

    18. I'm terrible at waiting for a company to fill an order (mostly because I sit on a sculpt/character for a looong time before stalking the marketplace like a rabid dog) so when I see a sculpt I've been wanting, I tend to jump on it. I don't mind paying $50-$100 less then new price. Sometimes, I do give up and pay the extra cash just because I fear that particular doll not coming up again for a while. Usually, its because they come with extras, a really nice face up, or other perks like mods (good ones. Like tattoos or a great sanding on the face or something.) But it really all depends mostly.

    19. Yes i would do that if it´s easier to buy the second hand doll and if the new one is hard to find i will take the second hand insted of searching and searching for it.

    20. I would possibly pay the same price for a used doll as long as it was clearly in new condition. I am pretty impatient and have a hard time waiting for preorders...so something that I could get right away would make me super happy!
