Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Would you buy a second hand doll for same price as a new one?

Jul 3, 2013

    1. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If the doll is in pristine condition- that is: kept in original box, never faced up or has original professional face up, no damage or yellowing. I would get it because it saves on the long wait of having the doll made by the company. I could have the doll in 1 to 2 weeks instead of 3 to 6 months! I find it a bit shocking that dolls that just arrived to the new owner get put on the marketplace within days but these are great targets to buy if it is a sculpt I was going to buy anyway. Seller feedback is important too but with PayPal I feel relatively safe with sending my money to a stranger.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I look for sellers who do not charge for extras. PayPal fees should be the seller's responsibility. I would only pay the same as manufacturers price or less unless it is a limited sold out doll or one with a custom faceup from an artist I recognize. If it has been played with or has been out of the box for any length of time, then I feel it's value has depreciated and should pay less than original price.

    2. I usually sell dolls for the price I get them so I think I would have no problem, the only thing is I'd need a layaway and, just maybe, the parcel to be declared as gift because, you know, customs.

    3. As I'm sure most everybody is saying, that would depend on a few things. For me, the primary issue would be condition; assuming the doll is new or like new, it would then depend on the model itself. Maybe it was a limited edition doll from a few years back that I never got a chance to buy, for instance. In that case, I think it'd also sway me more one way or the other if it had 'extras' with it, such as eyes, hair, or clothing.
But, if the doll (again, assuming good condition) were one that was still available from the manufacturing company, I'd probably just buy it new.

    4. Yes condition would be a big factor. As you said in an unopened box, then yes I would pay the original price.

    5. Generally I like to support the company if the doll is still in production-- but if it's new and what I want-- and in my country, I might go for it to just save on shipping + no wait time. As long as the doll is still in new condition I don't see the problem for it going for the same price as on the website-- generally you'll be saving on shipping if you pick from dolls on the same continent as you.

    6. 1. nope, i would never buy a secondhand doll for the same price as a new one. some people struggle with waiting so they find a new one from market. but i'm pretty good at waiting so if the price is same, it's not attractive for me.
so i guess i would never buy in such circumstances.

      2. if it is just like new, maybe $10-30 cheeper than new one? than i would buy. it's affordable i thinkg.

    7. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
I think it was depend on the doll and it's condition. I wouldn't buy a secondhand doll for the company price if it had damage to it.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I would go close to the original price. Lower, but close. Especially if it's condition was good and it was a doll I really wanted.

    8. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If it was in near perfect condition? Of course! Especially if it was in the country and I'd only have to wait a week instead of a few months.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

      Depends how good 'good' is.

    9. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
      Depends on a few factors
      -How new the doll is
If it is really new no yellowing then I would pay the original price getting it without the big wait is a bonus.

-If the doll is limited or discontinued
Then I would pay original price or more.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
Depends on what you mean by good condition if it is straight out of the box kind of good condition then I would pay the original price.

    10. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

It all depends on the condition, how well the make-up is & also the rarity of this doll.
Sometimes you can get the dolls straight away instead of waiting for another 2,3 months for a new one... it is a plus.
Also, people tends to pay more than the original price for the limited dolls.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

I am willing to pay the original price but hopefully the previous owner could deduct some shipping fee :p
Or if it comes with a few extra wigs or eyes would be super nice.

    11. 1. if its in the store, i wont buy anything 2nd hand for the same price. i just wont take a risk at such prices. who knows what will happen to the doll while its shipped or if the seller will scam me.

      2. if someone decide to sell his dollfie (limited) for the price she was at store, ill buy. for some reason the price get double triple on them right away.

    12. Generally no, I don't think I'd ever pay original price for a secondhand doll. There has to be some monetary difference to tempt me away from buying new from the company, because generally I don't mind the wait if it means I'm getting a brand new doll.

With limited edition dolls though, if I really want it, then all bets are off.

    13. I've found that pricing is completely up to the individual. I've bought three Adas in the past two weeks, all three were completely different prices.
It's so strange to me, but I also find myself justifying all the prices I've seen.
That being said, I haven't bought super expensive dolls. :3
I'll cross that bridge when it comes.

    14. Yes I would. If the seller is located in Europe it would help me save on customs and shipping. If the doll has a nice custom faceup, that one might even be better than the company faceup. And naturally, I did pay more for a Soom MD that's long sold out than it originally cost, same goes for two Unoa boy kits I desperately wanted to have because they came with faceups I fell in love with, even though there'd have been cheaper options. But I'm very picky with any flaws and need to know beforehand. Otherwise I'd probably be quite desperate (thankfully, no disappointments on the secondhand market so far)!

    15. I think that it depends on a few factors, myself.
I, myself, will not buy a secondhand doll for the same price as the original. At that point, I'd just buy the original. There's more of a chance that secondhand, there has been damage such as yellowing or chipping. Some people are greedy and may want their money back, but for a doll that is brand new for the same price and isnt rare or no longer for sale, i dont think its worth it.
Now if it came with stuff such as clothing or a professional face up, I'd consider it. But then I'd require the box/bag the doll originally came in, the certificate if there is one, and all the original stuff that a company might include (two pairs of eyes usually, and eye putty)

    16. I will spend almost up to the cost new if someone I really want. I like that there is no wait and I like that you can see the actual doll you will get.

    17. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If it was very recently purchased and spotless, yes. Though only if it were a limited edition doll.
If it were limitless I'd buy from the company or a dealer.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
It depends on the condition of the doll! If it was good as new I'd pay closer to full. The more blemishes it had the lower I'd pay.

    18. It depends. If the doll was discontinued or hard to find and I could find it secondhand and in good condition I would definitely if I could. If the doll is an available sculpt then I would most likely order through the company and get it new. However I can see the benefit of getting a doll secondhand in good condition/fairly new and not having to wait for the company.

    19. Another thing to consider, at least for European buyers, is import fees... If I can buy a recent BJD in good condition from a European seller there's no import fees while they can run up to 1/3 of the price (including shipping) when buying directly from an overseas company. For very expensive dolls that would be the equivalent of another (tiny) BJD!

    20. Due to the unavailability of the type of doll I fell in love with, I paid more for them secondhand than what the original owners would have paid for them brand new.
