1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you buy a second hand doll for same price as a new one?

Jul 3, 2013

    1. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
If it was very new and a sculpt I had been meaning to buy anyway I might, or if it was a sold out doll.
But generally I wouldn't, if I buy second hand I'm looking for something cheaper and typically second hand dolls are older and have some marks from playing/accidents/face ups.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

I would still like to get it maybe tens of dollars cheaper than from a company.

      EDIT:
As CinDeeCae mentioned, the import fees are a pretty big part why I wouldn't pay the same price as from a company. If the doll was in Europe, I'd be much more inclined.

    2. It depends on how good condition it is in, and if seller don't charge extra for the faceup the doll is wearing. If it's in great condition (no yellowing, chipping, faceup stains etc.) and inside EU I'd buy a 2nd hand for the same price as a new one, because that way I'd save the customs. :)

    3. It totally depends on the doll, and if it is still available.
It also depends on if I like a particular doll. Some of my dolls are "character" dolls, that were made by modifying commercial dolls, and then presented in online stories. In such cases, the price of the new doll is irrelevant.

    4. It really depends on a lot.

An LE doll that was a personal grail I'd probably be OK with paying a little more than the original price, especially if it's in great condition.

An older, yellowed doll that's well-cared-for but also well-worn? Yeah, that better be marked down a little to account for the age of the resin, but I'm still not expecting a HUGE discount from the original price--maybe 10% tops.

And if it's not in good condition and needs loads of TLC to look nice again? There's no way in any of the hells I'd pay more than half price--and this goes for both BJDs and play dolls. (I've seen some very sad dolls on eBay with a starting bid near the original price--for a certain expensive brand of kid's play doll, after it's been chewed on by the dog or had writing scrawled all over it with a Magic Marker. Sorry, but nobody is that stupid.) After all, time is money, and if it takes me 25 hours to restore a doll, then I expect that to be reflected in the price.

    5. It really depends. For me, if it's a sold out doll and I like it so much, eventhough the second hand price is over the original one, if I can handle it, I will take it. Cause I don't know if I miss that chance, how long I gonna wait for the next one comes up.

    6. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
      That depends.
      1) is it a limited?
      2) is it still manufactured by the company?
If no/yes, then there's no way. If I'm gonna spend the same amount might as well get it fresh.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If the difference is negligible I wouldn't bother. A used item doesn't hold the same value to me as a new one does.

    7. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Like everyone else said, it depends. I hate waiting times. If I can find a doll in excellent condition - bonus if it's in my country - then I would considering paying the same price for it. I've even overpaid for a limited BJD this way, although I know that wasn't exactly your question...

If it's in a condition other than what I am really looking for then no, I don't want to pay the same as I would get from the company. I would expect chipping, damaged faceup, and so on to be discounted from the doll's price. I don't consider yellowing a defect unless it's uneven or butter yellow (or beauty green), so that also depends.

How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
The above answers this, I think!

It's a little odd when people refuse to buy a brand new, second-hand doll (as in the person opened the box, immediately puts the doll back and lists for sale) for the same as the company price. How is it any different from a dealer opening your doll to make sure it's okay, puts your doll back, and ships it to you?

Reminds me of buying a new car and the value immediately drops once it's driven off the lot.

    8. If it were limited, with a zero chance of rerelease; I'd cave in and buy >w<

    9. There's a doll in the Marketplace now, that I've been watching. It is priced almost the same as the price for a new one. The seller says it was only taken out of the box once, so it is like new. What would make me decide to pay full price for a pre-owned doll is if I could save a lot of money on the shipping. If the seller is in the US, the shipping will be half what I would pay if I got it from the manufacturer in Asia. Also I wouldn't have to wait months to get the doll. So wait time and shipping cost are the factors that would cause me to pay full price for a pre-owned doll.

    10. Maybe, if it was a grail doll that was no longer available and in almost perfect condition. But right now there isn't any doll I really want or need so it's hard to say until that happens.

    11. If it was a limited edition that wasn't available to order anymore I probably would. If it was a readily available doll I might just because there's no wait time, but it would have to be in mint-condition with box and everything.

    12. If it had a cool custom face-up then yes i would pay more for a second hand one, but if they were exactly the same i would probably get a new one because then it has no yellowing and it has been completely yours

    13. maybe, if the doll was in a good condition and it is a limited sculpt that is hard to come by or if i happen to have an obsession with the sculpt at the time.

    14. Yes, if the doll is in brand new condition. Faster to get, cheaper shipping, no customs. It is still less expensive to me, less stressful, and you know exactly what you're getting (if I've ever would to buy a Fairyland doll I would definitely buy it second hand because they seem to have so many defaults...)

    15. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
No. Well, maybe if it was limited edition.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
I think 75% is fair, but it's negotiable.

    16. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?
Only if it was a limited sculpt. I could just buy an unlimited sculpt from the company ..

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
If it's a reasonable price that beats the dealer price I would consider it.
Again, the availability of the sculpt changes my view on how much I would pay.

    17. I'm actually usually willing to pay pretty close to the original price for a second hand doll, as long as it's clearly in good condition. Just because I'm horribly impatient and I don't mind buying a used doll and getting it in a week or so for the same price as getting one brand new and having to wait for at least a month.

    18. Short answer: Yes.

      1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

Yes, if it was in as-new condition and the owner charged as much as the company. This way you a) help a fellow hobbyist out, b) get your doll much, much faster than you would from the company. Also, in case of a limited doll you actually just got yourself a pretty sweet deal!

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?
Up to what the company prices for it. I wouldn't buy it for more or if the seller charged paypal fees on top of that.

    19. If it is in good condition and shipping is less than $30 then yes! if not, I'd prefer to order from the company.

I forgot to mention: this is only for the regular dolls, not limited dolls. Of course I would pay more for a limited doll if it's not offered by the company anymore and if I really really want it. But for regular dolls that are available always, second hand dolls for the same price as the company should be in good condition and have something that catches my eye (a good face up, for example).

    20. 1. Would you buy a secondhand/preowned doll for the same price as a new one for the exact same doll?

Depends on the age of the secondhand doll and its condition. It sorta drives me nuts when I see a non-limited doll for their retail price when the owner has had it for five years. Obviously it's the seller's right to charge whatever but that's a listing I would skip. I also prefer buying from a seller who doesn't charge Paypal fees. (I don't expect buyers to pay my fees, after all.)

I do love giving a home to dolls in need, so typically I check the MP before I order a new doll to see if anyone is selling that certain sculpt.

      2. How close to the original price would you spend on a secondhand/preowned doll if it was in good condition?

I'd pay the original price if the non-limited doll was EXACTLY what I wanted (right sculpt, right skintone, right face-up, like-new condition, etc.). If not, I'll buy direct from the company or via a dealer.
