Would you buy dolls without visible joints?

Apr 25, 2013

    1. I love the joints personally. My gran once said to me "You'd think for the money you'd spend they'd be able to cover the joints"
      I'm pleased they can't =)

    2. I do love the dolls' joints and never edit them out of the pictures; I believe its something we should be proud of as it sets our dolls apart from all others and offers them their impressive mobility we so enjoy.
On the other hand I wouldn't mind a seamless body either, to be honest. Silicone bodies without visible joints are really cool c:

    3. I don't think I could ever get a doll without visible joints. The ball jointing really is what makes BJDs charming, and without them I probably wouldn't be attracted to the hobby the way I am now.

    4. I wouldn't buy a BJD without visible joints.
I think this is a great part of their charm, really, and without their joints they would become a bit creepy imho. I love their joints, and don't want them going anywhere, it's one of their trademarks ;D

    5. Actually the joints of BJDs are very unattractive to me. I collect a lot of non-Asian ball-jointed dolls, and I prefer smooth limbs. I wouldn't like BJDs as much if they couldn't pose, though... I like my Jem dolls, from the 80s, which have plastic innards that can bend but the outside is covered in smooth vinyl. Barbies can pose their legs in that manner, but Jem dolls pose a lot better and you can move both their legs and arms, so to me they have the best construction.

People complain about seams, and I'm used to those on fashion dolls, so they never bother me. But joints... I don't find them attractive at all. I want to keep them covered up. I like how some dolls have sort of like 'joint covers' that will slide into place and hide the joint a bit.

    6. I probably would because they are awsome but I'd be afraid of what I'd do if the inner skeleton broke. ^ ^;
Having said that, I do LOVE joints. I find them very attractive somehow. uvu There are a few types of joints I don't like (like DC's msd knees) but overall, I think I really like joints and makes me kinda of sad when people edit htem out of photos UAU

    7. I love the look of the joints, so that's a no from me. It's sort of like having a clock without seeing the gears that turn it, I guess. Sure, the clock looks nice and clean, but when you can see the gears and how they turn, it's fascinating and takes on a new level of interest.

Or at least, that's how I see it. From my eyes, the joints are charming, and the fact that the companies have different looks for their joints is awesome.

    8. Yes because I've seen dolls with joints photoshopped out and I thought it looked really cool because it's like the character came to life. No because then I have a realistic looking doll in my room that doesn't move and just sits there and it's like shit it's like someone dead sitting in my room what is this.

    9. I know that Lovely Doll had seamless silicone bodies, I even found a vid on youtube showing how they pose. From what I've seen they just as pose-able as most standard BJDs, but they're sort of awkward looking in a way I can't put my finger on. I also find they fall right into the uncanny valley, it's just too realistic looking for me, especially since the silicone makes the jiggly and soft like real flesh. With resin and thus visible joints you can make hybrids, and add fantasy parts, and you can mod them much more easily.

    10. I have to say that I wouldn't! I actually had a particular doll (Souldoll Kid Shawn) on my wishlist for a quite awhile but after watching a box opening video of the doll in question I noticed that it didn't have visible ball joints and killed it for me :c Its an odd thing.

    11. I mean I guess if I wanted dolls without joints then I would buy dolls without joints.

But as far as doll collecting for me...Nope I wouldn't buy dolls without visible joints. I like BJDs because they have a specific design aesthetic. I do like the process of "humanizing" them (photo-shopping, face-ups, artistic angles, dioramas, eyes that reflect light, etc.) I'm a fan of transformations so if BJDs were missing their joints - it wouldn't be as interesting for me. That said I've had action figures etc. without joints and BJDs are far more compelling.

The other reason I wouldn't be interested in dolls without joints is that I love seeing the engineering of BJDs. I like seeing how the sculptor deals with the pulley systems of the elastic to make them so flexible. That said, I am turned off by blocky joints but companies like Granado have dealt with joints beautifully in my opinion.

Plus I just downright like the fact that BJDs are so clearly "dolls."

    12. I just had to point out my delight in that reference.

Personally, as long as I know it's a BJD that's been photoshopped, I don't mind when the joints are shopped out =)

To the OP, as a part-time doll sculptor/hobbyest, unfortunately, if you conceal the joints, you get a pretty, multi-part statue that wiggles.

    13. Lovely Dolls seem to fall outside of the range of 'true' BJDs though...and they're creepy.

    14. No, I really like the joints in my dollies. I think it just adds another element to them, which is why in pictures I never photoshop the joints out <3

    15. actually, joint is kinda fav point for me ;) especially knee and arm XD

    16. This. I love the joints/"engineering" and think it makes our dolls unique when comparing them with other dolls, but I would consider buying a doll that had a seamless body if it had the same overall aesthetic of a BJD. If the doll did have a seamless body, I personally wouldn't want the doll to be larger than 60-70 cm.

    17. I Love the joints, it gives some extra aura to the doll, extra dolliness. Becuase well reason why i fell for bjd's is their doll vibe. I wouldnt buy a doll without visible joints.
It's very important for me how the joints look too, like I love round (ball) joints, and hate it when they are square looking. Reason why I love minifee body's and hate souldoll body's.

    18. For me not being able to see the joints turns me off from the doll. If I want a doll, I want it to be able to pose easily, and look natural. I need to see the joints, how they fit together, how they move, and look in a pose. Not being able to see the joints means I will potentially have issues if something breaks inside. If something did break, how would I fix it, how much time would it take, and how much mental energy am I willing to spend trying to figure a solution? When I first started researching bjd's I found a very, very, nice sculpt. But, it didnt have knee joints. I didnt purchase it because it would sit like a barbie. I didnt want that.

    19. the idea of seamless or invisible joints is awsome to me... My guy (souldoll zenith) has a hip issue that makes me nuts... (restringing might help be that has to wait till I learn how)... when the joints do stuff like pop out or stick out like some hips. That and like someone mentioned strapless tops... it's worse with thin straps that end up IN the joint... thats my main problem and reason I'd like not visable joints. But like Cloakedscheamer said... there would have to be alot of advances in "skin"

    20. If the dolls still posed well, I wouldn't mind invisible joints. They'd need to develop some really elastic material so it wouldn't bunch-up or wrinkle oddly at the joint... and it would need to keep a lot of definition. I can see that it might happen some day.

Joints engineered to be less visible/more realistic, would be OK, too.

I don't mind seeing joints... but I don't like jointed hands because the jointing looks so... well, obvious and a bit ugly. And double-jointed dolls sometimes really look unnatural. So I guess I'm more in the "Invisible Joint" camp rather than those who absolutely love to see joints!
