Would you buy dolls without visible joints?

Apr 25, 2013

    1. I mean, it would be cool because it would seem more realistic, but I prefer the ball joints. This makes it original and very charming. Something about ball joints just make it very mysterious and beautifully odd ^^

    2. Like most people have already stated - I also enjoy the joints on a doll. It's the one thing my boyfriend doesn't like about them - at least if they are too huge and esp if the string is very visible - but, I find it endearing, and some how makes some dolls seem more vulnerable - I know they are not *real* per say, but to me it's like a person who walks around with their heart on their sleeve so to speak, it feels open and honest that they "live" with their insides showing out. Alright, I know that probably sounds way weird but ah well :D

    3. I really like the joints. For me it's part of the magic and charm of these dolls :)

    4. I've thought of it before, but now I'm beginning to think how weird that would be. I think I'll stick to jointed dolls, even if it's just because they are what I'm accustomed to.

    5. I like the idea of having no join that can be seen, but then I would really feel like I'm holding a little real body, and that would make uneasy I think :/

BJDs are BJDs because we can see the join, that is what make them particular. So I think I would gladly look at them, but not own them :)

    6. That seems really interesting! Personally, I don't mind the joints at all. If there was a doll I want weather or not the joints are visible wouldn't be a make it or break it factor for me.

    7. Sort've like the humanoid robots? Personally I really like the visible joint look, I think it's really cool looking and a bit of a classic-type image.

    8. I like bjds because I like their joints. There's something charming about them and, to me, it's what makes them interesting. I don't think I would like them looking jointless because it's not what I am used to.

    9. I too love the joints on my dolls yet I also kinda want a Lovely Doll just because they intrigue me lol. I would have to see one in person to decide if they are just too creepy or not though. :)

    10. The joints are one of my favorite things about dolls.
seamless joints just feel like they'd be a weird mix of uncanny valley and barbie doll.

    11. For me, the visible joints are what attracts me to BJD's :)! Though some joints don't look nice at all, most of them look really good. I don't think I would ever buy a doll without visible joints as I feel like they would look a lot creepier. There are those silicone bodies, but when they bend their limbs the elbows and knees are really rounded instead of angled. I really dislike that.

    12. I'm definitely a fan of good jointing and engineering on a doll - one of its major attractions for me. As an artist, BJD's remind me of articulated wooden artist models, only much, much better! : D

    13. Nope. I like the joints. In fact when it comes to all dolls I prefer them. I like tons of articulation and visible joints even on my little non-BJD's. I go out of my way to make sure all my dolls have them if at all possible actually. BJD's in particular I think it would really turn me off if they had wire click knees like old Barbies or some very pricey action figures that I've seen. They may look more realistic but I just don't like them at all.

    14. Hm... Maybe? That's a definite maybe. As previously stated, I really do like to see the various joints on a doll, it makes it much more craftsmanlike that way, and it's all so much easier to customize, restring, etc. However, depending on the overall look of the doll, I certainly wouldn't object to owning one without visible joints. That depends on a lot of factors, though.

    15. I like my Jointed I think, A smoother line i wouldn't mind, because some joints really stick way out <.< but it wouldn't be a BJD without the BJ standing out right? it would be a NJD....Sound a bit odd :XD:

    16. On the one hand, aesthetically I do think I would like non-visible joints. My dolls represent human (or humanoid) characters, so realism is good. On the other hand, non-visible would probably mean they are harder to get to if the doll needs maintenance, like restringing or sueding (as I am assuming non-visible would mean hidden by some type of skinlike material). Which might make the doll impossible to pose after a while, or might mean you need costly specialist services to maintain it. So in theory? Yes. In practice? Probably not.

    17. I would love to see a ball jointed doll without visible joints. That would be really cool because BJDs are like man made humans to me. I was thinking of sewing a body suit in stocking like material up to the neck area if I do get my doll. That might create the joint less look. But seeing how the joints work is really intriguing too! (Although some dolls have really strange looking joints)

    18. I have seen a review on YouTube on something like that, it was a small silicone doll with all the needed joints even her fingers are poseable but non of the joints are visible, to be honest it looked kina creepy,I think it loses the identity of the ball jointed dolls, it looks more like a sex toy :D

    19. I remember, too, as a kid, that the vinyl covering over the joints (like on Barbies) interfered to a degree with their mobility. I had a couple of little dolls that were hard plastic and hinge jointed and they were a lot easier to pose and play with. Even back then, I wanted everything poseable - very poseable. I drove my mom crazy wanting her to engineer joints on all the stuffed animals she made so they'd pose.

Not to mention that if it gets damaged or stained, it's so much harder to clean/repair.

    20. I'm one of the few who wouldn't mind a doll with invisible joints, I think that's pretty cool. I don't mind joints either, as long as they look nice enough (I'm picky about which sculpts I'll buy because of the joints).
My worry about a jointless doll like a silicon doll, is the stress of moving the silicon or internal wire back and forth and eventually damaging it. Or if it looks really unnatural while bent, or if the range of motion is limited. That Lovely Doll posing video fascinates me, that particular doll looked very natural at the joints, in my opinion. The other dolls on that website don't look as nice at the joints, though. I wonder why. Too bad the silicon dolls tend to be very sexualized; the idea itself is very neat, but I would feel like a creep to buy one, or even look at the websites :sweat
