Would you ever buy a second-hand doll that's more expensive but modded well?

Dec 11, 2013

    1. I would & have paid extra for a secondhand doll with an amazing face-up. Both my Choa & Ceebee were Marketplace finds that had face-ups by Evenstar. Neither had been on my wishlist but when I saw them, it was instant love even though they were more money than a brand new stock doll. I wouldn't pay extra for mods though like elf ears or ear piercing. I can pierce ears myself & I prefer to have my dolls the way they come.

    2. Only if the modding done was something that I found artistically ingenious, and that I couldn't do it myself! :)) I have a very DIY mindset and wouldn't hesitate to try doing things myself as much as I can.

    3. I recently bought a head not because I was looking for that doll but because the faceup actually gave me an idea for a new character that I needed. I'm not so into modding (yet) so I would definitely go for something that fit my aesthetic or worked in my story.

    4. Maybe. If the mods really improved the posing of the doll or I absolutely loved it, I might. But, on the whole, no. It would have to be a really amazing doll. I love secondhand dolls so much because they do have extras and cost less.

    5. I think that for me, a big part of the fun of dolls is being able to customize it yourself and bring out your own vision. There are definitely ideas that I want to see represented in/on my dolls (characters, etc...) and if I see a modded doll that fits those ideas then I would definitely get it, but more likely than not the modifications have been done according to another person's very specific vision and might not fit mine. I definitely appreciate the art and craftsmanship of a well modded doll, and if I had the funds I would definitely collect more dolls just for the purpose of having something beautiful by an artist.

But I think that there are many collectors who value dolls as art pieces as well, and may have more money or more desire to purchase dolls that are one complete vision.

    6. I've bought two dolls that were artist repaints & cost more than the original, and both were worth every freakin' penny and more.

The humble but classic Volks SchoolHead A was transformed into the absolute jewel of my collection by the masterful Satoko Ohno…. And I adopted a Volks SD17 Genji from SDink's personal collection, finding him to be exquisitely perfect just as she'd left him. In both cases, something about the face mods/paintjobs resonated powerfully in my brain as being just the man I was looking for.

One look at that haughty Ohno repaint, and "That's Kaiya! Right there! I didn't know what kind of doll he'd be, but there he is!" One look at the ethereal-tough SDink Genji, and I suddenly knew that was the long-lost lover I'd been trying to find for my Iplehouse Luo. When these dolls are The Right One, they really let you know. :chocoheart

    7. I would buy it, if its the head I want, on a better body, or vice versa...currently I am in love with a cream Namu from Soom, but not too keen on his real body, I like jointed hips. If I found him, on a nicer body, I would get him.
Im wondering if I can get him on a girl body even, his face is beautiful (cream)....has anyone ever done that? Made a hybrid, using a boy face? Is that a faux pas?

    8. People do it all the time. Don't concern yourself with what you think a "faux pas" might be; just make the doll you want.

I don't know that I, personally, would pay more for a doll with a stellar faceup or mods just because of that faceup or those mods -- but that's because in general that faceup or those mods wouldn't fit what I have in mind. This has nothing to do with whether or not I think those things are actually WORTH extra money, because I do think they improve the value of a doll. Frequently, faceups can be works of art in and of themselves -- anyone who doesn't believe me needs to see things like those repaints JennyNemesis was referencing -- and those works of art deserve to be valued appropriately.

    9. it would depend on the individual doll and mod
for some, there are face-ups I've seen that I wouldn't mind paying more for because they're pretty perfect and others that I kind of liked but aren't close enough to what I want so I wouldn't pay extra for
I don't think I'd pay more for tattoos but it's a possibility if it's right for that particular doll
things like seam sanding and the like I would pay extra for

however, drilled piercings are a definite NO
no matter how limited the doll is, no matter how much I love it and no matter how amazing a price it's being sold for, I will not even consider a doll with it's ears permanently drilled even if the holes have been modded closed, I see that as irreparable damage

    10. Generally, I would say no. Any doll I would buy would be based on a character I already had planned, which is why it takes me so long to add dolls to my wishlists. If I saw something that was PERFECT then maybe I would buy a previously modded doll, but unless something truly grabs me on its own merits and I think WOW I must have this, I don't see myself buying an expensive second hand doll that had been modded. Mainly, I would be more interested in second hand dolls for my own modding purposes.

    11. Yes,I would buy it! When I see a doll with wonderful face-up made by a talented artist,or just custom face-up which i like,I'm willing to buy such doll!
So happened with my 1st BJD-Iple Mari,I bought her from one girl, who made a great job with her-she turned her into Disney's SnowWhite! So I got Mari with custom face-up and dress and everything else! I think it's really nice purchase for me!!!

    12. I will buy if I feel that they so unique not look a like to other of the same sculpt.

    13. Certainly - if it was what I needed/wanted I'd just as soon buy it all done vs having to send it out for a face-up. AND some dolls (mods/face-ups aside) are ONLY available '2nd hand' (Volks here's looking at you)

    14. I think I would if it was a work of art and I loved it the way it was. I love to do my own vision but it is nice to have another artist's work as well if I really like it.
