Would you let your kids play with your dolls?

Oct 25, 2010

    1. I think it depends on the child. My daughter just turned 9 and she has 2 dolls in her room. She will gently hold them and talk to them, but not play with them (ala Barbie style). She never tries to change wigs or clothes without my help and is very aware of the delicate face up. I don't worry about her at all around my dolls, but I do worry about her friends who visit. On occasion I hear her issue a stern "don't touch" warning, and so far so good. But, if she were to have a sleep over or party, I am sure she would bring them to my office away from her playmates. Not many children that age understand the concept of collector versus play dolls, but they seem to comprehend words like "expensive" and "breakable".

    2. I wouldn't let little kids around maybe ages 10 and under handle my dolls

    3. Oh, goodness, no. I hardly feel comfortable letting people borrow paperback books. There is absolutely no way I would let a child play with my doll.

It's one of my major flaws, feeling unable to share most of my possessions, but I feel like I'm justified in it with my BJD.

    4. To me a lot of it depends on the kid (don't have any of my own yet)- if the child is old enough and has proven that they can be careful with things, then it's okay with me- of course, under my supervision. If they're the rowdy, rambunctious little boogers that a lot of kids are- then HALE NAW. I have a niece that's about to be 3 months old, and I already know my sister will be pissed when I tell her that she can't play with Aunt Becky's expensive dollies, but she'll just have to get over it- it wasn't her money that bought them, she doesn't get to decide who does or doesn't get to touch them. (Sorry to sound ranty- I'm already kinda revved up for when that happens.)

    5. A world of no.

I don't have children, and I'm sure everyone has covered the depends how old and how carefully and such. However I believe their is nothing wrong with having out-of-bounds items for children, they must learn at some point that not everything belongs to them and is something that they can play with.

Also you bought this doll with your money for yourself, nothing wrong with keeping it for yourself to enjoy :)

    6. I do it quite regularly. One of my Petite Ai whent home from a convention with a friend's toddler a few years back (she'd been pushing the doll around in her toy push-chair and I wasn't around when they had to leave the con so I collected the doll back a few weeks later when I babysat).

I'm quite happy for kids I know (so I have an idea fo how careful or not they'd be) to play with them. They don't touch the dolls without permission, but I'm usually happy to give them permission if they ask.

    7. I don't have any children of my own, but I have a nephew. He's only two and he's a monster with his toys so there's no chance I would let him touch my dolls yet!

However, I did have a friend who had a son. Both of us had dolls of our own and he was very interested in the dolls right from the get go. He was only six at the time, but he would see us taking pictures of our dolls so he would take his little toy camera and take pictures of his action figures. We would let him hold the dolls and he would always hold them very gently. At one point he actually was cradling my RS Song like a baby :3
And for some reason he whispered when he held the dolls, as if his voice would somehow damage them.

    8. I would, I can, and I have. I have a nine-year-old little girl who is very interested in the hobby herself, and is working toward earning her first dolly. I have no issues whatsoever with letting her handle the dolls (admittedly under my supervision) because she knows how to take care of them and she knows what not to do. She poses them like they're glass. She's an energetic enthusiastic child, but that doesn't mean lack of caution.

I enjoy being able to share my dolls with my daughter. It's fun having a mutual interest with a child that much younger; it's something fun for mommy and daughter to do together.

    9. It would depend on how old they were, and how responsible. However, I do intend to purchase an ABJD or two for my child(ren) if I ever have one/some.

    10. Ive let my litte sister who's 5 play with my two pukifees. She tends to think it's alright to just play with them whenever she wants afterwards so I have to remind her that's really not the case |D

    11. I do not have children of my own yet, but I think I would let my child play with my BJD when they are old enough to handle them with care.

    12. I should add - just as there are children that I would allow to handle my dolls, there are adults that I would not allow to handle my dolls. It really depends on how responsible and careful I think the individual is. Age has nothing to do with it.

    13. if i can, no, but if they are my cousins or something like that it's impossible to take care of the dolls, then when they come to my house, i take one of my dolls (they love it) and with my supervision they take it or play with it, but they are good boys, they never play with my dolls without careful.

    14. I don't have kids, nor do I really plan on having any... But if I did ever have kids, I would not let them play with my dolls until they at least got a bit older and could show me that they are careful and responsible. I would even consider getting them their own if they wanted and could show me they are responsible enough to have one.

Now other kids? No. I wouldn't even let other adult so much as touch my dolls, let alone other kids....especially since I have had the bad luck of being exposed to some bad kids.

    15. As a rule, I don't let the kiddos play with my expensive things. I have no qualms with showing them or letting them hold it for a little bit, etc. I wouldn't be comfortable letting them play with them unsupervised or without me there. I wouldn't even be comfortable with another adult touching my dolls or being left alone with them.

I know this isn't right for everyone especially those who are raising children or have younger siblings. But I'm someone who's had a lot of my more treasured possessions come up damaged or lost over time. It's just something I've had to deal with it a lot and would prefer to avoid it.

As far as the argument of what age someone is mature enough for a doll. I have a nephew who owns a PS3 and he probably takes better care of his system and games than I do. He's very meticulous about not scratching the games and keep the system dust free. He also has a cheapo cellphone that has fewer scratches on it than mine. And he's seven. ^^; Children all have different temperaments and delicate toys might work better for some than others.

    16. Not at all. If I allow them to play with them when I'm around I'm sure they'd also take them out to play when I'm not around and I don't wanna find any make-up or hair cuts or what not on my dolls. That's what Barbies are for^^
They can get them when they are old enough and interested enough to have their own BJDs.

I don't have any kids yet so this is all hypothetical :)

    17. I wouldn't allow any kid to play with any of my dolls (BJD or otherwise). I would allow a young teen (12 or up) if I thought they were responsible. On that note, though, there are some older teens/adults who I don't consider responsible enough for me to allow to handle my dolls.

    18. I started collecting when my son was two and he's always handled my dolls. He has his own 'baby' that's ABS as well. I don't let him play with the resin BJDs or handle them unattended, but he's always been very gentle and I trust him with them more than I trust my husband.

    19. I don't allow anyone to touch my dolls, never mind a child. They're just too expensive to be "played with". There are plenty of other toys out there!

    20. I don't have any children, but even if I did, I absolutely would not allow them to touch my dolls. That's not limited to children mind, I really don't like anyone to touch my dolls, or just my stuff in general.
