Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. I would prefer to make clothes, but I am not very good at the moment and I would feel bad having my dolls dress in my mockups. So I buy them for now until I can practise some more!

    2. Uhh, both? Sometimes I want my girls in name brands, sometimes I want them in my brands.

    3. Coming from a cosplaying background, of course sewing all sorts of things is just right up my alley xD
Although there's some great things like suit jackets or extremely detailed things I can't do quite yet on such a small scale... so half and half I suppose!
I love recycling my old clothes though, that way I can still enjoy the memories of those ratty jackets or shirts!

    4. I do both :) I love sewing for Nova, but I also buy clothing already done as well. There are some things I can't sew yet so I like to buy super detailed outfits to fit my girl and then I make more casual things for her to wear as well. Plus if I can hold the clothing that's already sewn I can get a better idea on how to make it myself.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who uses my old clothing to make things for my dolls! Sometimes I have a piece of clothing I love so much but it gets a hole or a permanent stain so I use the still good fabric to make my dolls something nice. It's a good way to get nice fabric and I get to enjoy something I paid for a while longer.

    5. Actually a little bit of both, I'm no where near the best a sewing but still attempt to make things here and there. But I do love shopping for doll clothes as well. And though sewing tends to be cheaper in the long run, but the moment you come across the perfect shirt or dress online. I cant help but buy it for my girls, and wait for it to arrive so they can try it on.

    6. 95% of all my doll clothing is made by me. I got a shirt that I like online, and one more that came with a body I purchased. I have a doll hat, and most of my doll shoes are purchased. But, I'm learning to make those too. If I don't make it myself, it feels like I'm just taking the easy way out. In my humble seamstress' opinion, of course.

    7. If I had the kills to make them, surely I'd dedicate time into making them myself.
Would give the opportunity to make exactly what you want, the way you want it.

    8. I prefer to purchase clothes. Simply put I don't have the time to sew, and even if I did my hands shake too much to do so. -_-'

    9. I prefer to sew them, even though I'm no good at it. It's a skill that I wish to work on so that I may not only make clothes for my doll, but also for myself. There are some clothes out there that are really quite stunning for BJDs, but the problems that arise are either the cost or the possibility that it may not fit correctly.

    10. I will be able to do naught but knit accessories. I don't have the dexterity for such small stuff, sadly!

    11. I near enough always buy... because I cannot sew. At all. When I was living at home, I would make socks and hats for my guys because my mum has a few different sewing machines, including a nice simple one I could use. Now though I usually ask her to make my dolls things... She's knitted and crocheted dresses and cardigans for them, as well as scarves and I have a couple hat & glove sets a friend from my old work made for them. I like having one of a kind items too so I buy from Etsy a lot~

    12. I'm perfectly happy with just buying clothes for now since I've found a lot of sellers that I like with good prices.
I do want to start sewing my own doll clothes at some point but for now I have no idea how to. >.<

    13. There are a LOT of sewing tutorials here on DoA. I started off making sock sweaters and hoodies and just kept on sewing. Practice makes perfect! Since I'm afraid of my sewing machine I don't know how to use a sewing machine, I sew by hand, which I now LOVE to do! Its very calming after a hectic day of work as a Paramedic to come home, watch TV or a movie and sew.

This shirt is the latest thing I made, and its all by hand. Before I got my first BJD, I didn't even know how to sew on buttons without stabbing myself. :sweat I made a LOT of mistakes (still do) and I've undone and redone things so often that I keep my seam ripper next to me when I sew.

I thank the tutorials (and their creators), my stubbornness and my determination for my resinoyds to have nice clothes to make it so I can sew this well.

Tohma's shirt still needed two button when I took this pic:

So I guess you can say I LOVE to make my own vs buying. :XD:

    14. I prefer to sew clothes myself...unless it's jeans **shakes fist at denim**
I am planning to buy Sadraline (and any other doll) a nice pair of jeans rather than sew them myself, because denim is evil.

    15. I learned to sew on my mom's ancient Singer when I was a kid. I only recently (2 years ago) bought my own machine, but I love it! Although it was only a little over $100, I'm amazed at what it can do. I do all kinds of crazy things with mine, such as sew hair wefts for wigmaking, and I've never had any trouble.
I have to agree about denim, though. It's not so bad on a human scale, but I cringe at the idea of making jeans in doll sizes. That's something I'd just probably buy.

    16. While I've seen lots of beautiful clothing for sale for bjd's that are just gorgeous, they are also often expensive! I'd pick sewing my own over buying them I think. And if they are awful, well.. It's a learning experience I suppose.

    17. I prefer buying them, 'cause what i can possibly make will never be as nice as those. But if i could do this, i'd prefer sewing. I actually like it. The process. The quality though... But yeah, i'd definitely choose sewing clothes by myself, if i only was satisfied with the results. And i still hope to get there someday.

    18. i do not prefer one over the other. i suppose it is up to my girls. i will shell out the money for something premade if it is perfect for one of them, however most of them are picky and their clothes are very specific so i will be forced to break out the sewing kit.

    19. For me, I love to buy, but the character I have in mind for my doll (and those for future dolls) are hard to shop for. I've noticed that not many folks make medieval themed clothing for MSDs and Pukifees that aren't gowns and bodices.

I'm learning how to use a sewing machine now, with this hobby as the inspiration. However, I have made doll clothes without a machine before, and found that as long as one has a steady hand and an eye for detail (and thimbles, and patience, and...) it can be done. I'm likely going to have to do my incoming little girl's clothes via hand stitching anyway, since she's so tiny.

    20. I'm no pro by any means and I have the bad habit of cutting corners a lot, but I really think I'd want to sew my doll's clothes.

I'm self taught and have only really done cosplay stuff in the past, but I also have the pencant for wanting to buy fabric left and right so this is a dangerous combination for me, money-wise. LOL
