It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. Purchasing clothes, Because I don't really know how to make clothes.

    2. Oh....I wish I could have sewing skills to make them for my dolls.
Due to my lack sewing skills and lack of fabrics, I bought outfits for my dolls.
Personally, I would prefer buying clothes to save time and efforts...

    3. Buying clothes is what I prefer because my sewing skills are very poor and it is not uncommon to fall into pieces. :sweat

    4. at first, I throw all money to buy cloth, shoes, wig and everything that my girl need to wear XD
right now, I try to learn sewing (practice on simple cloth)
future plan, make cloth to be know by every one and get the brand XD

    5. I would really like to get better at sewing so I can make more clothes for my dolls as it is more affordable more often, but I often buy clothes right now because of the looks of the outfit or because I know there is no way I could make what I want.

    6. It's a toss up, but preferably I'd like to be able to /make/ my own clothes for my dolls. I'm novice to the profession of sewing, but I have a small machine, a hand-held one, and material. (I believe my parents also own a super nice machine.) I play to foray into it and see where it gets me. :) Not only is it a money saver, but it's also cool to say 'I made this'.

    7. So far, I've only bought one outfit for my Cover, and that was her first outfit. After getting her, I was able to get all of the measurements I needed for making her clothes. I sew costumes for myself and friends for conventions, so I like using the leftover fabric to make her things too!

    8. I've been sewing my own clothes for many years, and when I started the hobby I just assumed that I could do it for the doll as well. I was in for a big surprise once I realized how difficult it is. For now, I stick to knitting and I found this a lot easier, but I will not rest until I get the small scale sewing right, so there will be quite a bit of practicing and learning ahead. In addition I think it's much more rewarding when you're able to sew your dolls clothing and you don't have to compromise because you just make it the way you want it.
There's one exception: Shoes. I don't think I'll ever be able to make shoes...:(

    9. I make both I buy clothes and I make them by my own ^^

    10. I do both. I'm a fairly decent doll seamstress and Chaeri has a LOT of homemade stuff. I also tend to make things I couldn't find easily otherwise for her, such as hanbok and kimono. But I'm not averse to buying a cute outfit I happen to see if the price is reasonable enough. ("Reasonable" being a relative term, of course.) Also, sometimes, it's less expensive to buy the outfit ready-made than it would be to purchase the materials to make it, believe it or not.

    11. Both. I can only handsew if I want to make clothes for them, and I don't really buy cloth to make them clothes (I don't need a massive pile of fabric that I use a small bit of, right?), so whatever I have is just clothes I don't want turned into fabric for their clothes. Mostly I buy because it's easier. I only sew simple tshirts and add random patterns to their simple shirts because I'm bored, more than anything.

    12. Great question! If I have the capacity to make something, I have a hard time buying it, I'd rather spend money on something else...(like dolls!) I like to buy handcrafted items from people that are more talented than I, to help support each other. I can knit very well (I used to manage a yarn store) but can only sew simple things. So hats off to those who can sew kickin' dollie outfits!

    13. I used to sew 10 years ago but now I want to get back at it and it is the reason why I got back in the hobby. I would prefer to make clothes for them because at least each piece is different. It is easier to buy clothes for dolls but for my slim MSD, a lot of the clothes that are available are very limited and it isn't the style I want for them so I have no choice but to sew clothes for them.

    14. I'm a compulsive sewer and have rarely been seen without a needle in my hand since I was a child. So I do make most of my dolls clothes, however, I do on occasions buy an outfit from IpleHouse. I love the freedom of being able to choose my own fabrics and trims to suit the doll or theme. The majority of my sewing is a combination of machine and hand finishing (which I particularly enjoy).

I also knit and crotchet when in the mood, but prefer to purchase hand knits from Etsy, especially when the knitting looks better than my own. :)

    15. Well, if I COULD sew I'd definitely love to make stuff myself, but I tried it and I'm super clumsy and bad at it so I gave up after a while :sweat
Way cheaper, you can get the materials you want, you don't have to search for seamstresses and you can sew outfits you designed yourself in a timely manner.
Now I'm stuck with paying someone else, if I even can find someone who's able to reproduce my ideas for certain dolls :C

So it's only buying/commissioning for now.

    16. Definitely a maker where I can, but I cannot knit.
I have just been looking at the wigmaking thread and am dying to give that a go as it is so hard to find a specific type of wig sometimes.
I have to buy shoes though, unless it is something which can be made in fabric like a slipper or medieval boot.

    17. Ideally I would prefer to make them, but in the absence of time to get better or skill I tend to buy them. When I started this hobby, before I knew of any communities I actually assumed that people in general made their own and that buying was just an occasional special thing to do ^^;

    18. I have decided that I will make the clothes for my BJDs before I purchase clothes. I all the fabric cut out and need to get out the sewing machine out. I am choosing to believe that everything will go well.

    19. I'm not that great at sewing, so I like to buy. I hope that once I feel confident enough, I'll start making more clothes!

    20. I've picked up a lot of sewing skills thanks to my cosplay hobby, but I don't really have strong feelings on whether I'd prefer to buy or make my own clothes? I think that I would buy something if it looked really nice, but I also think if I couldn't find something I wanted that was for sale, I'd sew it myself.
