1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. I much prefer buying, even though the size can be very wrong. It's just that I'm rubbish at sewing - *making* clothes that are wrong size isn't all that nice either, plus the blood is so tricky to get out ;)

    2. I would rather sew them, but I buy them because it's easier and better then the things I make

    3. I'd like to sew for my dolls (and sometimes have to because a lot of the things I want for them straight up don't exist) but there's something of a fabric drought where I live, so I mostly buy. Nobody seems to sell knits for t-shirts around here (including fabric shops!), everything seems to be formal fabrics and Hawaiian prints. *_* The T-shirts I have sewn are made out of recycled fabric and it shows. I'd love to purchase some nice, vibrant knits in person for this.

    4. Have you tried thrift stores? Kids sections often have to-scale designs, and buying t-shirts from them can mean a shirt that's already nicely broken-in.

    5. I would prefer to make them, but that isn't turning out so well. I need more practice. :sweat

    6. While I would rather SEW the, I'm not quite skilled at it yet. Shopping has it's own rewards... I am hoping that later on my sewing skills become much more in action.

    7. I would prefer to buy them
but the ones I like are expensive ... so I sew !

    8. If I could sew, I'll definitely prefer to sew my own. However, since my sewing skills are a lot to be desired, I'll buy for now.

    9. I don't really know how to make clothes nor have that much time to learn how to make so I'd rather buy them ^^

    10. Making clothes would be a LOT cheaper, but I doubt my sewing skills are ever going to really be good enough for me to feel confident in doing it myself, so while it isn't preferable, buying clothes is a lot easier for me.

    11. I can sew, but I don't enjoy it at all! It was a necessary skill in the 1970s, as we did all our own dressmaking at home. I really love buying doll's clothes though - I'm a shopaholic I guess! To the extent that if I can't find much of a range in their size, I lose interest in the doll - that's super-lazy I guess :blush

As for fabrics well that is another problem - the range available in fabric stores near me and even online is not great at all. Teeshirt fabric is easy though - I go to a discount clothing store and buy mens XXL teeshirts - masses of fabric for even the biggest doll! Often cheaper than it would be by the yard in a fabric store too - it's worth trawling the sale rails in clothing shops for nice fabrics. It's crazy that a complete, new garment can be cheaper than fabric by the yard, but it often is.

    12. I think it's wonderful when you can sew clothes for your dolls! But unfortunately I can't do this...So I buy clothes). I also can buy handmade clothes, many of muy friends can sew very adorable clothes!

    13. I'd love to sew my own clothes for my dolls but I still don't learn :(

    14. While I hope to learn to sew at some point, right now, I will buy her clothes for her. :)

    15. I plan to make all of her things/their things...I may or may not buy shoes...I'm not sure yet, I like to sculpt, I may concoct some delectable heels as well....

    16. I don't have a preference. I really enjoy making outfits, but I also love to buy things others have created or from companies. It depends on what I am looking for at the time and whether or not I have time to sew and hunt for the right fabrics.

    17. I really enjoy sewing for my girls when I can, though I haven’t had near enough time to do so lately as I would like. Oddly enough I own mostly boy dolls though, so I can’t get away from buying clothes in the end. I just haven’t figured out tailored shirts and pants to a visually pleasing level that I will let them wear. My dolls want to look good, even if they do all look grumpy. XD

    18. I aim to make as much as possible by myself, but if the price is good, I might buy something.

    19. This is actually what I ended up doing recently and I ended up making a fairly nice shirt. (Though I bought some brand-new blank toddler shirts because they were on sale.)

I was ridiculously happy to finally be working with the correct fabric!

    20. With the dolls I collect currently, I usually buy sets for that doll's size. But this year, I'm going to try learning to sew because I've been meaning to for years.
But until I get good enough, I plan to design and commission doll clothes. OOAK stuff is becoming important to me.
