Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. Well I see a lot of people either wish they could sew, or they know how to sew. Well either way everyone has a different creativity and it shows in the doll you own, and in the clothes they wear.;)

    2. I hate sewing, and I'm terrible at it, even though I took a class and I've been trying for years. Not everyone can just practice and become good at something :sweat

But I don't buy pre-made clothes, almost all my clothes are unique commissions :) So that I can bring my vision to life. I like designing my own costumes, I just can't make them myself. I still feel proud and creative when I see it finished. :)

    3. In a perfect world, I would sew all my doll clothes myself, but in reality I have no talent what so ever. :sigh
I want my dolls to look beautiful, both regarding face-ups and clothes, so I pay people to do those things for me.

    4. If it's something simple, like a plain shirt, I would rather make it myself. I have a bunch of old shirts that would make awesome dolly shirts due to the colors and patterns. I've made two shirts and a pair of pants. I'm decent at the shirts but I've learned I would rather buy pants, suits, or complicated shirts. I also prefer to buy fantasy outfits, but I'm trying to learn how to make those as well.

    5. For me it is 50/50, some items i HATE sewing (pants) and others, sometimes i see a outfit i KNOW i could never sew.... and i buy it. So it really depends on what i have the inspiration to do.

    6. I wish I had the time to sew outfits for my dolls. I have fabric and other materials to make clothing, but I usually buy all my dolls clothing online or on etsy.

    7. If I knew how to properly sew and make things look at least decent then I would go for making my own most of the time. Seeing as I have as much sewing skills as a goat I prefer to buy them if I want them to look nice.

    8. I'm in the same boat as many others. I would like to sew clothes for my dolls but at the current point in time do not have the skill, which is unfortunate considering my complete lack of a budget for doll clothes. With shipping factored in, doll clothing almost always costs more than buying clothing for myself. I suppose that's just extra incentive for me to take a sewing course. Just have to find the time...

    9. No question; make them! When I make them, I know they are well-made. Not so much when buying them. You don't know till you get them, and by then it's too late if there is a quality issue. Just my Not So Humble Opinion! :D

    10. Wow, at lot of people are 50/50. I am glad I m in the same boat as most of you, I can sew small things, big things, I rather buy them and let someone else make it. Like I said before, my sewing machine and I hate each other. Lol :D

    11. I'm defenitly going to sew like... 95%. When you want a special thing you have to.

Ok... plus I'm too cheap to spend so much money.

    12. There is nothing wrong, with being cheap lol, I think most of the time we all are at some point.:sweat

    13. If I could sew clothes for my dolls, I would. Mostly to get what I know I would want that would work for my doll's characters and guarantee fit on those many I have that seem to be odd-sized.
However I can't sew at all XD and I would much rather spend time developing the skills I have than only be so-so at everything...so I buy.

    14. I love sewing so I make them, having this doll has given me a chance to make things I never thought I'd get to sew, it's fantastic!

    15. I'd prefer to buy cos I don't like any kind of needlework very much … but I hardly find any clothes that are suitable for my characters. I also don't seem to be very happy with the outfits I bought, even though they are well made and have all those little details that I like: tiny zippers, buckles, real pockets and such. So, I am learning how to sew …

    16. I don't sew, and I want my dolls to look their best, so I buy their clothes. I like my dolls to wear clothes that don't look like doll clothes.

    17. I'd -prefer- to make the clothes, but I can't sew to save my life (I'm trying to learn though @_@). So as of right now, I buy all their clothes.

    18. Ergh... If I was talented enough, I'd most definitely sew my own clothing. I'm so finicky when it comes to picking out clothes -- even for myself. Being able to create clothes the way I envision them would be more than fantastic. But, unfortunately, I have the grace and finesse of a silver back gorilla and the hands to match and therefore cannot tame a sewing machine for the life of me. It doesn't stop me from trying though! ^^

    19. I do both. I love the creativity that comes from creating a OOAK. But it is a misconception for the most part that sewing is cheaper. Unless it is a very simple design, when you figure cost for shopping for fabric, trim etc and the time it takes to sew, a lot goes into that one outfit. Also if you want to use really special fabrics. it will cost you. Even a 1/4 yd of $40 fabric is $10.

It takes extra time to line up the fabric to match or emphasize a design element pr pattern in the fabric and then you have to fit it properly to the doll. I took sewing classes when I was younger so I have the benefit of knowing what to look for in other people's creations. I will definitely pay more for a well constructed outfit with unique fabrics. Sometimes I have to wait to make the big dollar purchases. Sigh

    20. I definitely prefer to buy them. Two of my dolls are in custom made outfits, but those were commissioned. I've made a few attempts at sewing a dress for my newest girl and...it's bad. XD Real bad. I'll probably have to commission an outfit for her sometime.
