1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. Unfortunately I hate sewing and I tried to learn but getting hate it more, I'm really horrible in this skill :(
Sometimes I hope that I can sew and make a beautiful clothes to my lovely girls by my hands! Oh well I can dream xD
Thats why I buy clothes rather than make them

    2. I would rather make them. But I have so many things to do and don't like waiting until I have time to make clothes. So, I buy them.

    3. My sewing skills isn't that great so i actually buy the clothing for my BJD. The sites i often go to is Nine9 Style, they have very good fashion clothing. I like them a lot, their clothes can be a little expensive but i highly recommend them of the good quality they're made of! I alos buy Minifee clothing from SMPdoll, she makes such cute and wonderful fashion clothing for Minifee girls and also Feeple60. I Highly recommend her as well!

    4. being a newbie, I think the price of the outfits are a bit unrealistic & have started making my own

    5. My problem is not about sewing but making patterns. Even the simplest ones, I can't make them fit right for the doll; and I can't even figure out how to modify a pattern to make another type of sleeve or nothing like that, I simply can't.
So I would love to make my own clothes, as they would be unique and I could really have my dolls looking exactly what I have in mind, but sadly I have to buy the best clothes I can find.

    6. If you've got more than one pattern, you can just take the sleeve piece from one and put it on the other.

As for "not making them fit right," is it an issue because of the doll's breasts, and needing darts to make the tops fit around the torso more tightly? Because I know how to deal with that. PM me. ;)

    7. I know nothing about sewing so I have to buy. However, I do like having a hand in the design process and working on concept art, etc.

    8. I at the moment am doing both. I would love to make more clothes in the future, but I do not have my doll yet and all I was thinking about when I bought her was that I needed to clothe her when she got her. Once she gets here I will be making LOTS of clothing for her, but also buying pieces I know I cannot yet afford.

    9. I would LOVE to be able to buy clothing for my dolls. Unfortunately my sense of aesthetics is completely opposite anything I find for dolls, and I'm a bit of a skin-flint. One of my dolls wears the stereotypical plague-doctor outfit - not something you're likely to find in any doll shop, especially for a YoSD, and I have no real pattern so I'm flying a bit blind and just making it up as I go. Another doll I'm making a maid outfit based on the manga Shirley Madison by Kaoru Mori, so I'll be able to look at patterns, but the doll's an odd shape so I'll probably end up just making my own. This will also probably all be done by hand - I have a sewing machine, but it's a pain to bring out and use. My MSD has a bunch of store bought clothes, but most are gifts or loans. I might buy her jeans, just because I don't think I can make satisfactory ones myself.

I am, however, going to buy the primary outfit of my future SD, despite the fact that it's a painful 140$ and more expensive than almost every item of clothing I have. But it's GORGEOUS and I'd never be able to make it myself. I will make him any other clothing he needs, no matter how complicated. (He might end up with a dress like this if his character stays consistent.)

    10. I'd definitely prefer to make my clothes, most of the time. I love my sewing machine and have so many ideas for outfits, especially when I comb the many doll clothing shops and don't see certain styles I like. However, time constraints prevent me from being able to sew much of a wardrobe for any of my dolls, and buying doll clothes sometimes feels like going on a fun shopping trip (I research pretty heavily on sizes before I click "buy", though)--way more fun than buying for myself, I might add. So, I save up my pennies for a few purchases here and there, but these days I try to find time to sit down and make my dolls some unique outfits. I hope I'll be able to do more of that sometime soon.

    11. I am the least creative person in the world so I prefer to buy mine, I wish I could make them though!

    12. I bought the clothes for my first doll, but because Doll Chateau bodies are so out of proportion, I've opted to make the outfit for that doll! I just need to make the sewing pattern when the doll arrives! :) I think the only thing I will actually buy pre-made for DC Lance is his shoes! :)

    13. I have studied as a dressmaker and trough a lot of practice I think I've achieved how I want my dolls to look like, sometimes I buy clothes if I see things I like.

    14. For me, definitely buying. While I used to be capable of making my own clothes, nothing I make would be very high quality or particularly good looking, even. Even if I was able to though, I have very shaky hands due to a physical disorder and wouldn't be able to maneuver my hands properly or keep things steady enough to make my own.

    15. I bought some but doll clothes are so expensive, I try to make the simple outfit for them and save the money for a new dolls. :)

    16. :( That's definitely a good reason not to try making clothes yourself.

    17. I love making clothes. However, I'm at the point where just buying them sounds a lot nicer... :sweat

    18. I would prefer to make them if I had the skills...but alas, I have 0 sewing skills so I must buy.

    19. I prefer to commission clothes from seamstresses that don't mind working with you on what you want. I especially appreciate the ones that will let you send the fabrics you want them to use.

    20. I do enjoy making patterns and sewing, but I don't have a lot of spare time to devote to it... nor, if I'm being completely honest about it, do I have any particularly impressive talent as a seamstress. I'm just as much of a klutz with a needle as I am with anything else.

So, in general, I just stick to making very simple things for the crew myself, and I buy or commission anything that's more elaborate than I think my Old Chick eyes and clumsy, fatty-chan fingers can handle.
