Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. Sew, hands down. Because I'm unreasonably stingy when it comes to buying clothes. Especially when I know how much the fabric costs. I don't think I've ever bought any of them a single clothing article. :sweat

    2. I sew all my doll clothes. That was my major reason for getting into the hobby. I love sewing. I see lots of pre-made things I like but there always seems to be something I'd do differently (even if it's just colour) so I tell myself that with enough time and effort, I could make it just as nice for considerably less money. Then I forget about it, get busy and it takes forever for me to sew something new XD

That was... until tonight. In my several years in this hobby I've never seen one pre-made outfit that was so perfect I wouldn't change a thing. But I stumbled across a DollHeart dress that just wouldn't leave my mind. I stalked it for weeks just admiring it, debating whether or not I could justify it and would I feel guilty for dressing my doll in something I didn't make? DollHeart also tends to be a lot more... frilly... than anything I've ever sewn for my girls, they tend to dress more modern/casual.
Well, I was stalking it again just moments ago and noticed that the "quantity remaining" was only 1. I didn't hesitate, I bought that sucker so quick I made my own head spin. Yet somehow a beautiful pair of boots seemed to find their way in my cart as well....

Lesson learned? Never say never when it comes to this hobby XD

    3. Something's I know I can't make like shoes I'll buy and wigs too but sometimes I'll find things that work. Buy socks to make shirts or bracelets for belts.

But I really love sewing for my dolls. It helps me bond with them.
[IMG] Like this outfit I hand sewed for my MSD. ^^

    4. I wish I could make some clothes myself, but my sewing skill is really poor, so I have to buy it. Well, sometimes I still try to sew something, but just for fun:lol:.

    5. I've tried sewing, and I've failed. so far I've been able to make Victoria leggings. I would prefer to buy the rest.

    6. I think you can have so much fun with sewing outfits yourself. You can think of all the little details for your character.
.. If only I was good at it thought ;(

    7. I'd prefer to buy things premade if they aren't too costly. I'm sure with practice I could make clothes but for now I'll let someone who knows what they're doing handle it.

I do like making my dolls beaded jewelry, though. And getting a girl soon I'll have a lot of fun with that!

    8. I'd love to make all of Kell's things but I lack the sewing talent.

    9. For right now i am buying clothes for my dolls. I do not have the necessary materials or machinery to begin making clothes for my dolls right now. I hope to try someday. :3nodding: t will surely save you money if you did their clothes buy hand instead of buying them. if you make them yourself. I think i would also find myself in a pickle here. My dolls wear such detailed and intricate clothing, that i think it would take me years to develop the skills needed to hash out such clothing. :sweat

    10. If I could - I would make most of them. I just don't have the skill to create the fine tailoring I want for my dolls. I've made simple things for them or things I can't find.

    11. I''ll buy jackets, jeans, dresses cuz my sewing skill is horrible xD and sold the basic stuff myself like t-shirt, sweater, pants, skirt

    12. I love sewing clothes for them, but I have so many grand ideas, I could never realize them all, even if I had the training/talent :XD:

    13. I think certain things I would like to purchase, but for the most part I'd prefer to make them. It's the main reason why I became so interested in the hobby.
That is for larger dolls, though. I think for tiny dolls I would just buy clothing for them.

    14. I prefer mostly to buy. However, if it's simple enough to produce, like a scarf, I'll make it myself.

    15. I think I do an all right job of making doll clothes, if I do say so myself. :sweat Basically, if I don't think I can make an item properly, the item is decently priced, or the cost does not outweigh the time required to make the item, I happily buy. Otherwise I attempt it myself.

    16. Depends on the doll. I buy my yo's clothes, but for my Lati yellow Sp. and PF Sugar girl, most of their clothes are handmade. And I am working on my puki patterns. I just taught myself to sew and am getting really good at it. It is much cheaper to do, and I can now see an outfit I like, and make it my self. But I like sewing for the 20 cm and under dolls.

    17. I tried to make them but It is just to difficult for me...I'm like a potato trying to use a sewing machine :(
So know I have plans of buying them :D

    18. I'd prefer to make them as I usually can't find stuff readymade in the style I want that will fit the dolls I have currently. Of course sometimes there are styles that are just beyond my sewing skills.

    19. What initially got me so into BJD was handsewing a dress for my boyfriends doll as a gift since she didn't have a lot of nice things at the time. After putting it on her I fell quite deeply into the hobby and don't go a day without making or planning out some sort of project involving her. ^-^ My seamstress skills aren't all that high, yet, though. So Lain has a mix of bought and handmade clothing.

It's nice to buy the clothing and then examine what went into making the item, too. Then using the pattern later.

    20. I prefer to buy clothes. Because it looks better, than self-made. I like firm outfit.
