It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. I am all about buying the clothes. Let me enjoy the fruits of someone else's labor.

    2. Buying is better but I'd also like to make clothes from time to time. :D

    3. Buying clothes seems better and more convenient. I'm more conscious of time lately and shopping/window-shopping takes less time. :XD: But honestly if I could pick between, say, being amazing at sewing and making my own clothes or unlimited funds and buying clothes- it would be a hard choice but I'd pick the former for sure.

    4. I make most of my doll clothes and would prefer it if I was competent enough to make all of them. As it is I buy anything made out of a knit and jackets and stuff for my tinies but make most of their clothes. I buy anything I can't knit for my slim msd. But when it comes to what I would prefer I would prefer to just be good enough to make it all myself ;).

    5. Buying close can be expensive, and making them can be challenging.
If your creative enough or just up to the challenge than making close from old thinks you don't wear anymore sounds like it would be super fun. For me, I would prefer to make the clothes, and if Im absolutely struggling I would buy.

    6. Well I try to make my clothes but I am terrible at using sewing machines so I sew them by hand but then they look...shabby. But I can't really find exactly what I want online. So instead I am commissioning my mom who is a skilled seamstress to make me some stuff. :)

    7. For my fit & appearance preferences, I like to buy the clothes made for the doll's size. There are some places to find good fitting clothes not made by the company which made the doll, but there will be disappointments while learning. My wife is now gravitating towards wanting to make doll items; she has some sewing experience from quilting. What I'm becoming interested in is doll shoe making & repair. What I have spent on shoes..... $!

    8. Oh well this is a question I'm continuously struggling with. There are amazing clothes and accessories out there which could make us spend hundreds in an instant. And another amazing dress or a pair of shoes will always be there, even if we had endless money to spend (which we don't have), so this basically has no end.

So, I decided to learn sewing and am trying to get better at it, so that I'll be able to sew what can be sewn at home, at least :roll:Clothes with basic designs, like simple dresses, pants, blouses etc. Not that I'm already an expert even at making these, but I'm working and this progress also keeps me from buying things I could sew. I think "No, I can sew that" and pass it.

But, there are also those dream outfits only years of experience and professional sewing equipment can create. I can't see anything else to do other than buying, in that case :abow:

Finally, I also hope that I'll have enough skills and experience one day to sew the clothes in my mind, the designs my characters need and I know I won't be able to find anywhere:abambi:

    9. Both for me. Stuff like jeans or winter coats are beyond my skill level and take a great amount of details. However for simple shirts or socks I would love to make them for my dolls. Anything beginner level I would try to do for myself, I would love to make tiny pleated skirts for my dolls ^_^

    10. I make my own clothes I think about 98% of the clothes my dolls have are made by me. The reason for this is I love making there clothes, I get so many ideas and it's a great creative outlet for me. Sometime I think I would like to buy more clothes, But right now I spend too much money on fabric to buy any.

    11. I'd really LIKE to make more of my clothing, but I haven't quite managed to scale my sewing skills down into dolls. So everything I have is either bought, or made by my roommate.

    12. Both ! ^^
I enjoy making clothes but when it's too advanced I prefer buying clothes.

    13. I have ALWAYS bought clothing for my doll. I am NOT gifted in the art of sewing-- anything I would crank out would be a travesty! I'll leave it up to the professionals!

    14. I plan to make most of my doll's clothes, though I do have some Barbie dresses that I've been having my doll wear in the meantime. If something is out of my skill range (or if I REALLY like an outfit I see online) I'd probably buy it though.

    15. If I could make my own clothes, the vast majority of my doll's clothing would be made by me. I have mental images of various outfits for the dolls I have and want to get, and trying to find clothes similar to those outfits, or a character style has not been all that easy. If I could make my own doll's clothing, I could make the outfits I want in the styles I envision. (Heck, I could also use the skill to offer commissions, which would mean more money for my addiction, I mean hobby)

    16. I like to make my own clothes. I actually justified getting a bjd by telling myself that it would be nice to have a bunch of little sewing projects. I've since learned that it's infinity more difficult than I'd thought it would be, but I'm still enjoying it.

    17. I would love to make my own clothes, however I can never seem to find nice bjd scale lolita fabric, the print's I fall in love with are always too big. Plus I'm not that great at hand sewing and have yet to replace my sewing machine that carked itself a couple years ago.

    18. I wish I was better at machine sewing--I'd make everything if I had the time! I can hand-sew well enough, but if I'm gonna improve I need the ability to fail faster. So far most of my dolls' clothes are bought, but I've made a few things over the years including sweaters and hats because doll knits were scarce when I wanted them.

    19. Buy buy buy buy buy.

I make everything else- wigs, eyes, do my own face ups, but clothes? I'd rather buy them. Sewing is too fiddly for me, and I don't have a sewing machine, anyway. The most frustrating part is finding clothes I like in the right sizes.

    20. I prefer to buy clothes for my male dolls, since it's easy enough for them to share.

My female dolls can't share clothes as easily because they all have different bodies, so I used to buy or commission clothes that would fit a good number of them. Over the last year though I've made the resolution to use up the fabrics I've been hoarding for over a decade so I've (very slowly) begun to make their clothes myself. It's mostly the pattern-making that's daunting because it's not going to be "one size fits all", and since I only have enough fabric for one go, I really have to be careful with the pattern and fit.
