Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Would you prefer to... Buy clothes or make them?

Mar 12, 2013

    1. I've made a few things but found that I really don't enjoy making tiny clothes. Maybe if I collected larger dolls I would enjoy sewing for them since I do enjoy making historical clothing for myself. For my tinies I would rather pay someone else for their time making clothes and spend my time doing things that I enjoy.

    2. Though I don't make any clothes I want to but it won't stop me from buying when I do get around to learning. I know I won't make a lot of what I want plus I'm lazy lol.

    3. I prefer to buy my doll clothes...mainly because I'm not all that great at sewing them. After spending so much on the actual doll, I don't want to ruin their appearance by my own sloppy looking clothing.

    4. My mom taught me how to sew when I got into the hobby and since then we've figured out little tricks and stuff along the way to sew clothes for my dolls including making patterns in the shape of what I needed so I didn't need to sew on separate sleeves or pant legs. It's worked great thus far.

    5. As I'm restricted on time, I tend to buy clothing, but I never really buy expensive clothing. I normally shop around ebay or second hand stores for some cheap deals >_< also, I'm quite clumsy at sewing which makes it harder for me to make clothing for my dolls..

    6. When making your own clothes I guess they can be more 'special', or make your doll feel more unique/customised, or it is easier to fit the doll to your image/get the doll looking specifically how you want them to look.

Having said that, I am terrible with patterns so it will likely be mostly bought for me!

    7. I like them having a few expensive things, but cost wise overall I think I'm going to attempt to sew some basic shirts and such, then try some more complicated clothing for the army :)

    8. I sew all my stuff. It's a good thing that I can sew - I am so picky and most my dolls have an unusual and specific style that I KNOW I wouldn't be able to buy them any where ready made. *_* It is one of the things that I love the most about this hobby. I feel pretty fortunate as it does save me money as buying fabric for a specific item is so much less than buying a very nice outfit ready made. And it does help very much to bond me to each doll.

    9. I would prefer to make my own clothes, but I'm not good with my hands. I want to at least attempt to sew my own clothes... one day when I feel up to it.

    10. I'd rather buy clothing. I just wish it were easier than it is. I don't seem to find very many nice casual clothes at decent prices. Also, I'd love to see it physically rather than an image then pay shipping.. I guess that's what happens when you can't sew haha

    11. When I started out in this hobby in... 2005 (oh my gosh, has it been that long?), I couldn't sew at ALL. The year I got my first doll, I asked for a sewing machine for christmas, and like an overly-optimistic moron, I thought I'd be able to sew half-decent clothes in no time at all... Nope! So for a long time, I bought the clothes for my doll or traded stuff for them.

The sewing machine kept beckoning, though, and over the years, I slowly learned. I'm still not an amazing seamstress or anything, but my dolls don't wear super-fancy clothes, so I can make what I need by now. And it gets more addictive the better I get!

So by now, the answer is definitely that I prefer making over buying.

    12. I do both, but I prefer making them. (o^^o)
Once in a while I buy some of I like it and it doesn't cost too much, and if I see something cute and cheap I'll buy it, but otherwise I just sew clothing myself. ^^ I find it fun to sew my own clothes that way since I like to design clothing anyway, and when you sew your own clothes it can look like however you want. ^^

    13. I wish I could sew them clothing myself, but I am not very good and haven't made much progress on getting better. So, I have no issue in buying clothes, especially if I can support a fellow hobbyist in doing so. :)

    14. Make. Except things I'm not skilled enough to make like shoes. and pants. :)

    15. I like to sew clothes for the dolls, it's fun to learn new patterns, gather up cloth and accessories, but some things, like jeans, shirt or corset is easier to buy, because they make my skills and not enough diligence to.

    16. At the moment I am buying them clothes but I have bought a few patterns and hope to make some soon.:)

    17. I really love making dolly clothes, even though I'm not extremely good at it. The problem with buying, for me, is that I easily grow bored of outfits, so I would have to spend a small fortune each time I have a new idea! So instead, I try to sew. So far, it's fun :)

    18. I never buy clothes unless they come with a bjd I have purchased. I make all my own clothes. I sew, knit and crochet what ever I need. My bins are all pretty full right now. I'm like showtaro and become bored with an outfit so I have to keep making new ones. I have a variety of bjd sizes and like to have the clothes fit a specific girl. It's also much more fun for me to sew something original and unique rather than to just purchase something generic.

    19. I'm planning to buy a basic set for my future doll, but after that I'm going to sew the clothes myself. =)

    20. If I had the ability/knew how to make the clothes myself, I'd probably prefer to do that over buying them from someone else. I tend to be so nitpicky, but don't really like to say anything so if I do get something from someone, I just leave it as is if it's close enough. It'd be nice to be able to not worry about that kind of thing.
