1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you rather commission a faceup, or do it yourself?

Mar 24, 2013

    1. Nauticaa, there is one really good tip I learned (this was not the only good tip I learned, just the one I think might make you more willing to try yourself) at a Volks Dolpa faceup class, and that is to use the headcap to practice on. Just MSC it, and you can paint and wipe to your hearts desire. It will be the same resin as your dolls head but not as intimidating.

    2. With so much talent available it is relatively easy to find someone with the style of face up your looking for.
I prefer to let the artist run riot. If you love their work you won't be disappointed! ??

    3. Commission for me.:) i don't know how to do the face-up lol. ^_^

    4. I like to create, this is the reason I've chosen the bjd-hobby. So everything for my dolls I do by myself. Maybe I am a future famous make-up artist, who knows!

    5. Thanks for the tip Stella Maris, it's a good tip :) Never thought to use the head cap before!

    6. I rather usually do it myself cause i had be drawing since 03' and i not afraid of making an angle good but i do like practicing when it comes to inspiration and this is new to me i have one that came with face -up my bobobie and the second one IP Zera i wanted in blank and it help me learn how to do face-up ( i have my sister doubted me that i can't do any sculpted paint see me not know how to do any art sculptor) just because a brainer and know art not gonna lie grad art college but what the diff a person newbie and a know it all don't matter u never know the person had better ideas then making them u know as they say just my imagination i tell ya :D

    7. I love create too and if I was talented I 'd love to do make up myself but this is not the case so..... commission for me too

    8. I feel fairly confident as an artist that I can work on the faceups for my dolls, but as with all things, there is a learning curve when working with a new medium. I only have 2 dolls and see no reason to change their faceups regularly, so with cost of materials and time factored in, it is more practical for me to find an amazing faceup artist on DoA and choose commissioning over doing it myself.

    9. i would buy a doll with a company faceup because i don't want to mess up my doll , till i learn cause i have no idea how to put on makeup :XD:

    10. I think both. It is fun to be able to personalise our dolls to just how we want them - but that itself is where the problem lies for me. I am unable to recreate what is in my head to my satisfaction, so if I want a specific look for a character I would send the doll away to an artist. I have been really pleased with my last two face-ups - one of which i did today. I had no exact requirements and just went with the flow. I just keep on with it until i was happy with the end result. Completing a successful face-up gives me a real sense of achievement - my own work of Art!

    11. I'm really not fit to do a faceup
I once wanted to repaint my doll n it came very weird
I can't get the eyebrows right and I'm not good in drawing I also don't want to practice lol
So I think getting my dolls professional faceup by artists is better
There are many artists out there with different styles just choose the one that matches ur dolls oc and let her/him do the magic for u

    12. I would rather do it myself. My first doll came with a face-up only because I didn't want her to be blank. Now almost 2yrs later I want to change it. Doing it myself would help me bond better with her. I'd be to afraid to send her to some unknown place and let her be in the hands of a person I don't really know. And then she might get lost in the mail. To many chances I'm not willing to take.

I readily admit I suck at drawing but I'm pretty damn good at doing my own make-up and doing a face-up to me is the same as doing my make-up just with different tools. I look at commissions pages and take ideas from them and see all the little tricks they put into it. But I'd rather do it myself. So as soon as my materials get here I'm gonna be changing Alessas face-up.

    13. I've commissioned three of my heads to be repainted despite having all the materials at hand. Just been too nervous to give it a go.

Have been inspired to try and give it a whirl on my floating head thanks to this thread though. :3

    14. I own a blank head, and, personally, I would rather commission a face-up than to do it myself. This is because I'm just starting out in the hobby, and I don't really have much experience (translation: no experience whatsoever haha) with doing face-ups, nor do I have the tools to actually do them myself. So, yeah, for now, I'd rather commission a face-up than do it myself. Of course, that can (probably) change, when I actually do try and do face-ups myself, though, I think that's quite unlikely, as I'm not really good with art in general. \shot

    15. I'm a little nervous about doing it myself, so I'm probably going to commission it. I was all gun-ho about doing my first face-up by myself, and then I thought of all the ways I could ruin the face and got scared lol

    16. I really don't trust myself enough to do a face-up yet...so for now all I'm seeing for my dolls are commissioned or company face-ups.

    17. Since I'm an artist and a big reason for me to get into the BJD hobby was the fact that I can paint/customize them myself I'd always prefer doing the faceups myself!
However if I weren't into art, or had any talent with a brush or so, I'd commission a face up artist whose general work I like, so that I could basically say that if they just did what they usually do in their faceups, I'd already be happy - that way there'd be not that much of a chance to be disappointed, you know, that
"No matter what it is, I love everything they do" kinda feel!

    18. The face up part was what really drew me to the hobby at first, and what I really wanted to learn to do, so I happily attempt to do my own. For my first resin doll, Sammy, as he was a birthday gift and I'd yet to try doing a face up on resin, I got the company to do it, since I wanted him to look really nice. I'm getting my first blank resin doll soon though, so I'm nervous, but excited to see how she'll turn out when I do her face up myself! :) My first MSD girl and my other Yo-SD girl both on layaway have company face ups though, since I really liked theirs. I guess it just depends, but I really want to have a lot of practice on my smaller, less expensive dolls before I do work on the ones I've spent a ton of money on. Either way, it's more personable and gives me bonding time with them if I do it myself. ^^

    19. I'm going to try it myself on a practice head and then decide! I'd like to commission, but I'm really picky. I've done MH face-ups and been pretty happy, so I just need to gather the right sealants, some clean brushes and give it a whirl <3

    20. I prefer to do mine myself. My dolls feel more 'mine' after I've given them a face. However, if I had a chance to get work on my dolls done by a favorite artist, I would.
