1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you rather commission a faceup, or do it yourself?

Mar 24, 2013

    1. I like to sketch up a collage together pictures of the face and accessories and clothing so I can find them or have them commissioned. I have posters and printouts of my ideas all over the house to annoy my husband but cat loves to sit on them! :)

    2. Commission, I don't have a suitable space in my home to do face-ups, use sealant safely etc. I usually purchase a company face-up with my dolls intially but obviously in time the face-up will need to be re-done and i'm happy to commission someone to do one for me. There are plently of talented face-up artists out there after all so it's not a problem.

    3. Even though I love art and painting, I know it would take a lot of time and practice to make my dolls look how I want them to. And considering I only own a few, it doesn't seem worthwhile to put in so much time when I have other projects that need attention. So I go with commission all the way.

    4. I like playing around with doing the faceups myself, and it's really nice when they come out well! But sometimes I'd love to be able to find someone local and hand the heads off to them, then pick them up in the same day. I don't know if I have the patience to send them away, and I'd be SO worried! ^^; I don't know if I could enjoy having sent it off, I'm afraid I'd stress too much. I mean, if -I- mess things up it's one thing and I can just blame myself and get over it, but if someone else did I'm afraid it would be a very different story.

    5. I've done both commissions and my own faceups...

I'm an artist at heart. I love taking on the project and have complete control over the transformation.

So doing it yourself is my vote!

    6. Commission for me. Simply because I'm not all that skilled at drawing and I also do not have the supplies necessary for faceups.

    7. I do the face up myself. I know what I want on my doll besides, I'm creative and artsty anyway. To me it's a just a learning experiance on a new medium

    8. I want to learn to do my own faceups, because I don't know how to convey what I want to someone else to commission them.
I feel like I'd probably get better results if I commissioned someone with more experience, but I love learning and trying new things --- I feel like even a not so great faceup I did myself would be satisfying because I can look at it and say "hey! I did that!".

It's also not like I can't wipe a bad faceup and start again! Keeping pictures of failed attempts of course, so later I can see how much progress I've made. (:

    9. I like the idea of dong my own faceup when I get my boys and girls [now delayed further away] but not sure I could do them right the way I want them to look which would be the only reason I would want to do my own faceup along with the cost factor but then the materials to do faceups are expensive for a start up. it would be cheaper for me to get the three dolls with face than the cost of materials to do it myself so I will wait

    10. I have pretty much zero talent for painting doll's faceups, so it's commission all the way for me.

    11. I would love to do a commission but I am too scared to send my doll head away and don't know anyone in my area. Nor do I want to pay $100+ on a face up. I know that sounds wrong to most because this is this artist time and material going into my dolls face. There are some artist who charge like $50 and that I can do but again I don't want to send my dolly's head too far. So I settle with doing it myself. It's not as great but I don't mind working to make it better. It's fun to do and I don't have to worry about what my budget will and won't allow at the time or sending my head away.

    12. I love giving my dolls a faceup when I have the time and the inspiration for it, but I don't mind buying a doll with a faceup. Sadly I am too much of a worrywart to commission someone.

    13. I wanted to try faceups myself so I removed all the faces of my dolls, thinking all of them needed a new make-over. Unfortunately it turns out that I can't paint a doll face to save my life, so now I am going to pay for having all of them commissioned. I spent a long time finding the artist whom I think will be able to create the face-up that I truly want and now all I have to do is wait for her top open a slot again.

So for me, although I wish i knew how to do faceups, I have understood that my talent does not lie within this specific skillset. Commissions is the way to go if I want my dolls to express the emotions I am looking for.

    14. Abit torn on this. I love and appreciate how professional artists make the dolls look so realistic. Yet i find that when i do my own doll's faceup, I bond alot better with that doll and It's less likely i would grow tired of looking at him or her. I would probably jjst redo her faceup if I felt she needed a new look as opposed to selling the doll because I don't want to mess the faceup I paid for.

    15. I prefer to buy them with a face-up or do the face-up my self. I love the artist freedom you get. I will say I have seen some amazing commission artists for face-ups, but I get to impatient to wait for a slot to open up or the thought of being away from my doll usually encourages me to just try doing what I have in mind. One day I will get a commissioned face-up probably for one of my SD boys since that is an area I am weak in. The other part of me would feel sad if I got sick of a commissioned face-up after a couple months, but i'm fine wiping and redoing my own face-ups anytime.

    16. Do it myself. Always. I know exactly what I want and can do it for free.

    17. I don't have any artistic ability, so I'd say commission. But, I am too paranoid to ever send away my doll's head to a stranger... So, maybe if I meet someone in my area or a friend who does faceups.

    18. I have no artistic talent :( So everyone gets commissioned out. Although I do try to switch up my face up artists so that the dolls don't all have the "same vibe". I think each of the face up artists I've used over time have only done a total of 2-4 dolls for me. Although one has done 8-9 because they're masters at the tinies and anthros!

    19. Commission, I have zero skill with face ups. I want my first bjd to look good. :)

    20. Commission, definitely. My hands aren't steady enough for such detailed work anymore.
